Characterization of methyl mercury in dental wastewater and correlation with sulfate-reducing bacterial DNA.

Dental wastewater (DWW) was collected over two months from a 12-chair clinic and a single-chair office to identify conditions that may affect Hg methylation. DWW was settled for 24 h and samples were collected from the top and bottom of the supernatant to simulate a range of particles that may escape in-line traps. Total Hg spanned 5 orders of magnitude (0.02-5000 microM), following a log-normal distribution with p10, p50, and p90 concentration values of 0.24, 31 and 4000 microM, respectively; typically well in excess of free aqueous Hg solubility. Methyl Hg was present in high levels (2-270 n

Sulfate-reducing bacteria methylate mercury at variable rates in pure culture and in marine sediments.

Differences in methylmercury (CH(3)Hg) production normalized to the sulfate reduction rate (SRR) in various species of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were quantified in pure cultures and in marine sediment slurries in order to determine if SRB strains which differ phylogenetically methylate mercury (Hg) at similar rates. Cultures representing five genera of the SRB (Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, Desulfobulbus propionicus, Desulfococcus multivorans, Desulfobacter sp. strain BG-8, and Desulfobacterium sp. strain BG-33) were grown in a strictly anoxic, minimal medium that received a dose of inorg

Metabolism of explosive compounds by sulfate-reducing bacteria.

The metabolism of various explosive compounds-1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB), hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazocine (HMX)-by a sulfate-reducing bacterial consortium, Desulfovibrio spp., was studied. The results indicated that the Desulfovibrio spp. used all of the explosive compounds studied as their sole source of nitrogen for growth. The concentrations of TNB, RDX, and HMX in the culture media dropped to below the detection limit (<0.5 ppm) within 18 days of incubation. We also observed the production of ammonia from the nitro group

[Anaerobic Reduction Process Characteristics and Microbial Community Analysis for Sulfate and Fe(Ⅱ) EDTA-NO/Fe(Ⅲ) EDTA].

Based on biological flue gas desulfurization technology (Bio-FGD) and chelating absorption-biological regeneration technology (BioDeNOx), simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification by biological methods combined with chelating absorption technology has been proposed in this study. This technique uses an alkaline absorption liquid with Fe(Ⅱ) EDTA to absorb the SO2 and NO in the flue gas. In this study, an attempt is made to simultaneously remove sulfate (SO42-) and Fe(Ⅱ) EDTA-NO/Fe(Ⅲ) EDTA, which are the SO2 and NO absorption byproducts in an anaerobic reactor. The results indicate that a

Anoxic desulfurization of biogas rich in hydrogen sulfide through feedback control using biotrickling filters: Operational limits and multi-omics analysis.

Biodesulfurization is crucial for sustainable biogas purification from hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This study investigates the operational limits of anoxic biotrickling filters (BTFs) for treating biogas with high H2S concentrations (up to 20,000 ppmv) using nitrite, along with simulated interruptions in H2S supply. The BTF achieved a maximum elimination capacity of 312 g S-H2S m-3 h-1 with an H2S removal efficiency of 98 % at an empty bed residence time of 284 s. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) feedback control system was successfully employed to maintain an H2S outlet concentration clos

Limited organics shaped microbial mutualism for enhanced nitrate and Cr(VI) co-reduction in a sulfur-driven biosystem.

Sulfur-driven autotrophic biosystems effectively remove nitrate or Cr(VI) individually, both being prevalent and hazardous groundwater contaminants, yet their co-remediation remains challenging. This study uncovered the concealed cause limiting co-removal and proposed a viable regulation strategy. Long-term operations of a sulfur packed biofilter (S0PB) exhibited suboptimal and heterogeneous performance, with nitrate removal rates varying by 25±9 % under a constant load of approximately 50.0 g NO3--N/(m3·d) and 0.5 g Cr(VI)/(m3·d). This impairment was attributed to Cr(VI)-induced suppression o

Exploring alkali-treated corn cob for high-rate removal of NOX and SO2 from flue gas: Focus on carbon release capacity, removal performance, and comparison with conventional carbon sources.

This investigation explored the potential of utilizing alkali-treated corn cob (CC) as a solid carbon source to improve NOX and SO2 removal from flue gas. Leaching experiments unveiled a hierarchy of chemical oxygen demand release capacity: 0.03 mol/L alkali-treated CC > 0.02 mol/L > 0.01 mol/L > 0.005 mol/L > control. In NOX and SO2 removal experiments, as the inlet NOX concentration rose from 300 to 1000 mg/m3, the average NOX removal efficiency increased from 58.56 % to 80.00 %. Conversely, SO2 removal efficiency decreased from 99.96 % to 91.05 %, but swiftly rebounded to 98.56 % by day 18.

Phosphate, magnesium containing additives and biochar regulate compost maturity and synergistically reduce odor emission in chicken manure composting: Role of physicochemical, bacterial and fungal dynamics.

This study explored the odor composition and emission in chicken manure composting process, employing chemical fixatives and biochar to mitigate odors effectively. Compost maturity, ammonia, sulfur-containing odor emissions, as well as the bacterial and fungal community structure were analyzed to assess composting performance and mechanisms. The results indicated that four malodorous substances were identified as major contributors: dimethyl disulfide (Me2S2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl sulfide (Me2S), and ammonia (NH3). Biochar (BC) augmented compost maturity by enhancing the relative abu

Indirect sulfur reduction via polysulfide contributes to serious odor problem in a sewer receiving nitrate dosage.

Nitrate dosing is commonly used to control hydrogen sulfide production in sewer systems. However, quick rebound of the sulfide concentration after nitrate depletion has been observed and results in more serious odor and corrosion problem. To investigate the mechanism of sulfide regeneration in the nitrate-free period, a laboratory-scale sewer reactor was run for 30 days to simulate sulfide production and oxidation with intermittent nitrate addition. The results show that nitrate addition substantially reduced the sulfide concentration, but the produced elemental sulfur was then quickly reduced

Characteristic and Mechanistic Investigation of Stress-Assisted Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion of X80 Steel in Near-Neutral Solutions.

The behavior and mechanisms of the stress-assisted microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of X80 pipeline steel induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) were investigated using focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB). Electrochemical results show that SRB and stress have a synergistic effect on the corrosion of X80 steel. SRB accelerated the transformation of Fe3O4 into iron-sulfur compounds and may have caused the film breakage of X80 steel products. The obtained FIB results provide direct evidence that SRB promotes the corrosion of X80 steel.

Fecal hydrogen sulfide production in ulcerative colitis.

OBJECTIVE: Sulfide, a product of sulfate-reducing bacteria, has been proposed to play an etiologic role in ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis feces have increased numbers and activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria, but only modestly increased sulfide. However, fecal sulfide exists largely in the volatile, highly toxic H2S form that moves rapidly from feces to surrounding gas. Our aim was to quantify the fecal release of H2S and other volatiles (CO2, H2, CH4, methanethiol, and dimethylsulfide). METHODS: Fecal samples from 25 subjects with ulcerative colitis and 17 controls were incubated in

Augmenting atrazine and hexachlorobenzene degradation under different soil redox conditions in a bioelectrochemistry system and an analysis of the relevant microorganisms.

Soil microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a sustainable technology that degrades organic pollutants while generating electricity. However, there have been no detailed studies of the mechanisms of pollutant degradation in soil MFCs. In this study, the effects of external resistance and electrode effectiveness on atrazine and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) degradation were evaluated, the performance of soil MFCs in the degradation of these pollutants under different soil redox conditions was assessed, and the associated microorganisms in the anode were investigated. With an external resistance of 20Ω, the d

Comparative Genomics of Beggiatoa leptomitoformis Strains D-401 and D-402T with Contrasting Physiology but Extremely High Level of Genomic Identity.

Representatives of filamentous colorless sulfur-oxidizing bacteria often dominate in sulfide biotopes, preventing the diffusion of toxic sulfide into the water column. One of the most intriguing groups is a recently described Beggiatoa leptomitoformis including strains D-401 and D-402T. Both strains have identical genes encoding enzymes which are involved in the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide and thiosulfate. Surprisingly, the B. leptomitoformis strain D-401 is not capable to grow lithotrophically in the presence of reduced sulfur compounds and to accumulate elemental sulfur inside the cells, i

Deciphering indigenous bacteria in compacted bentonite through a novel and efficient DNA extraction method: Insights into biogeochemical processes within the Deep Geological Disposal of nuclear waste concept.

Compacted bentonites are one of the best sealing and backfilling clays considered for use in Deep Geological Repositories of radioactive wastes. However, an in-depth understanding of their behavior after placement in the repository is required, including if the activity of indigenous microorganisms affects safety conditions. Here we provide an optimized phenol:chloroform based protocol that facilitates higher DNA-yields when other methods failed. To demonstrate the efficiency of this method, DNA was extracted from acetate-treated bentonites compacted at 1.5 and 1.7 g/cm3 densities after 24 mon

Biogeochemical cycling of sulfur and iron constrains arsenic enrichment in groundwater: Microbial functionality and organic matter composition.

Groundwater arsenic contamination is governed by the coupled iron-sulfur-arsenic biogeochemical cycle, where microbial functional genes and organic matter transformation play central roles, though regional-scale mechanisms remain unclear. This study integrates hydrogeochemistry, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), metagenomic sequencing, and metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) to reveal microbially driven mechanisms of arsenic migration and transformation in the Datong Basin. The results indicate distinct zonation of arsenic, sulfur, and iron speciation alo

Seasonal bacterial community dynamics in a crude oil refinery wastewater treatment plant.

The biological treatment of oil refinery effluents in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) relies on specialized bacteria contributing to remove organic load, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus compounds. Knowledge about bacterial dynamics in WWTPs and how they affect the performance of the wastewater treatment is limited, particularly in tropical countries. The bacterial communities from three compartments of an oil refinery WWTP in Uran, India, were assessed using 16S-metabarcoding, in winter and monsoon seasons, upstream (from the surge pond) and downstream the biotower (clarifier and guard po

Mixotrophic denitrification with Arundo donax straw and elemental sulfur in constructed wetlands: enhanced nitrogen removal, carbon-sulfur interactions, and greenhouse gas mitigation.

Surface flow constructed wetlands (SFCWs) treating low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio wastewater are often limited by insufficient electron donor availability, leading to inefficient denitrification and greenhouse gas emissions. This study evaluated mixotrophic SFCWs integrated with Arundo donax straw and elemental sulfur (S0) over 160 days. The total nitrogen (TN) removal rate of 794.45 mg N/(m2·d) was achieved, exceeding those of the straw-only and S0-only SFCWs by 24.16% and 213.15%, respectively. Sequential operation further reduced effluent TN to 3.07 ± 0.16 mg/L (78.90% removal). The global wa

Early-stage response in anaerobic bioreactors due to high sulfate loads: Hydrogen sulfide yield and other organic volatile sulfur compounds as a sign of microbial community modifications.

In this work, the early-stage response of six lab-scale biogas bioreactors fed with different amounts of a sulfate-rich organic agro-industrial effluent was investigated. Biogas characterization, gas chromatography selective for sulfur compounds and high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene were performed. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) yield went from transient to steady state in ∼ 2 weeks for all the studied conditions. In addition, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), like methanethiol (MeSH) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS), were generated at high sulfate loads. Changes were evidenced in the microbial co

Biochemistry and transcriptional regulation of bacterial sulfur oxidation.

Sulfur is one of the most important and versatile elements in biology and forms the basis of energy metabolism in many prokaryotes. Its extensive large-scale redox transformations drive the global biogeochemical sulfur cycle and profoundly influence environmental chemistry. In dissimilatory sulfur oxidizers, the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds is directly coupled to energy conservation via photosynthetic or respiratory electron transport chains. Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and archaea are remarkably diverse, reflecting both the wide range of habitats they inhabit and the variety of metabol
