The ideal spectral profile of topical sunscreens.

Sunscreens were originally designed to prevent sunburn and incorporated active ingredients that absorbed principally in the UVB region. However, over the past 20 years or so new ingredients have been developed that extend absorption across a much wider range of the solar ultraviolet spectrum in the belief that sunscreens should provide balanced spectral absorption. This article develops the rationale for spectral uniformity by showing that this requirement is aligned to more natural forms of photoprotection. It is shown that a modern sunscreen can provide a spectrally balanced absorption profi

Sunscreen isn't enough.

Topical sunscreens act by absorbing or scattering UV radiation and are widely available for general public use as a consumer product. Surveys carried out in the UK find that sunscreen use is regarded as the most important, and by implication the most effective, sun protection measure. But is perception borne out by reality? Sunscreens applied at the thickness tested by manufacturers need only possess an SPF of 15 to prevent sunburn even for all day exposure in tropical sunshine. Yet behavioural studies show that high SPF (>15) sunscreens do not always prevent sunburn. That the protection achie

Sunscreens: the ounce of prevention.

Sun exposure is linked to visible signs of skin aging, skin cancer, photodermatoses, exacerbation of systemic disease and photoallergic, as well as phototoxic, drug eruptions. Sunscreens vary considerably in their ability to protect patients from exposure to ultraviolet light and its effects. Inappropriate choice and use of sunscreen products can lead to worse problems than using no sunscreen at all. Controversies about sunscreen include adequate level of sun protection factor, appropriate age of users, and whether use of sunscreen products can prevent skin cancer. Instructing patients in how

Evaluating the Efficacy of Sunscreen Formulas in Reducing UV Filter Permeation Into the Stratum Corneum via In Vivo Confocal Raman Spectroscopy: Insights and Applications for Practical Suncare Product Design.

AIMS: The transdermal permeation of UV filters has long been a concern among consumers and researchers. Among them, the permeation of small-molecule UV filters such as homosalate (HMS) (molecular weight < 500 Da) and the regulatory effects of formulation components on its permeation have not been fully investigated. Furthermore, sunscreen formulations containing skin brightening agents have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. Thus, verifying how to adjust formulation components to reduce UV filter permeation while not influencing the permeation of active ingredients such as the skin

Unilateral Linear Lichen Planus Pigmentosus Responding to Isotretinoin: A Case Report.

Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a rare variant of lichen planus. Due to the scarce number of patients diagnosed with LPP, there are no treatment guidelines. Multiple topical and oral agents are utilized in LPP with varying degrees of response. Isotretinoin has only been investigated in a case report and a single prospective pilot study for managing LPP. Herein, we report the efficacy, safety, and moderate improvement of LPP patients on isotretinoin 20 mg (0.25 mg/kg), topical adapalene gel, 4% hydroquinone cream, and topical sunscreen.

Effects of topical petrolatum and salicylic acid upon skin photoreaction to UVA.

Various agents which can be used in combination can also interfere with phototherapy. In this study, the effects of topical petrolatum and 20% salicylic acid in petrolatum upon skin photoreaction to UVA were investigated, in an in vivo test. Minimal phototoxic dose (MPD) test was performed on 31 volunteers and the test was repeated with thin (0.1 cc/25 cm(2)) petrolatum, thick (0.3 cc/25 cm(2)) petrolatum, thin 20% salicylic acid in petrolatum, thick 20% salicylic acid in petrolatum and sunscreen. The effect of each agent on MPD was investigated. MPD was increased with thin and thick applicati
