Complex sweat gland hamartoma: A case report.

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP), tubular apocrine adenoma (TAA), and eccrine nevus are rare benign sweat gland tumors with varied clinical presentations but generally distinctive histomorphologic profiles. TAA and SCAP have been associated with other cutaneous hamartomas, most commonly with nevus sebaceus. Additionally, TAA and SCAP have uncommonly co-occurred in the same lesion. In contrast to nevus sebaceus, eccrine nevus is considerably less common and is rarely associated with other benign adnexal lesions. Here we present an unusual case of a complex sweat gland hamartoma containing…

Neural control of sweat secretion: a review.

BACKGROUND: Humans have 4 million exocrine sweat glands, which can be classified into two types: eccrine and apocrine glands. Sweat secretion, a constitutive feature, is directly involved in thermoregulation and metabolism, and is regulated by both the central nervous system (CNS) and autonomic nervous system (ANS). OBJECTIVES: To explore how sweat secretion is controlled by both the CNS and the ANS and the mechanisms behind the neural control of sweat secretion. METHODS: We conducted a literature search on PubMed for reports in English from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2016. RESULTS AND C…

Methylxanthine Drug Monitoring with Wearable Sweat Sensors.

Drug monitoring plays crucial roles in doping control and precision medicine. It helps physicians tailor drug dosage for optimal benefits, track patients' compliance to prescriptions, and understand the complex pharmacokinetics of drugs. Conventional drug tests rely on invasive blood draws. While urine and sweat are attractive alternative biofluids, the state-of-the-art methods require separate sample collection and processing steps and fail to provide real-time information. Here, a wearable platform equipped with an electrochemical differential pulse voltammetry sensing module for drug monito…

[Mucinous sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid].

A 52-year-old patient presented with a painless nodular tumor of the upper left eyelid, which was first noticed 6 months prior to the initial presentation. The histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the excised tumor revealed a mucinous sweat gland carcinoma. This very rare neoplasm (1/150,000 skin lesions) is located within the ocular adnexa in 40 % of cases. If completely excised the prognosis is usually good; however, due to the histological similarity to metastases of an adenocarcinoma, a hitherto unknown primary tumor at another site should be excluded.

Eccrine sweat response in children with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Even though there is a general conviction among parents of asthmatic children and pediatricians that asthmatic children sweat more than healthy ones, this has not been formally tested. AIM: To determine sweating response and factors affecting this response in children with asthma and compare these findings with healthy children. METHOD: Eighty-two children with asthma and 51 healthy controls aged 6-18 years were enrolled in the study. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was measured on palmar, volar, forehead, and back surfaces before and after exercise and was expressed as the diff…

Quantitative intradermal terbutaline sweat test in horses.

The aim of the current study was to quantify sweating responses to intradermal terbutaline in normal horses. Seven Thoroughbred horses were used. Terbutaline (10-fold dilutions from 1000-0.001 mg/l) and a saline control were injected intradermally (0.1 ml/site) and sweat collected for 30 min into absorbent pads taped over each injection site. Tests were performed monthly for 11 successive months and temperature, relative humidity and dewpoint were measured at the time of testing. There was no significant effect (P<or=0.05) of environmental variables or time of year on sweat responses at any do…

Recurrent endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma is a rare skin tumor that most commonly involves the eyelid of elderly women. Morphologically and immunohistochemically, it is analogous to endocrine ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast and mammary solid papillary carcinoma; also, like the analogous breast lesion, there is an often associated invasive mucinous carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation. We describe the case of a 65-year-old woman with endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid that recurred 3 years after an apparently complete excision.

Uric acid and urea in human sweat.

The present study investigated whether thermal sweating may relieve elevated concentrations of serum uric acid or urea. Concentrations of uric acid and urea were measured in the sweat of sixteen male volunteers, who were treated with external heat after one hour of intense physical exercise. The same analytes were also measured in their urine and serum samples. Furthermore, creatinine and some electrolytes were determined in these specimens. The results show that the concentration of uric acid in the sweat is 24.5 micromol/L, which is only 6.3% of that in serum. The concentration of urea in th…

Sweat secretion rates in growth hormone disorders.

BACKGROUND: While increased sweating is a prominent symptom in patients with active acromegaly, reduced sweating is gaining status as part of the growth hormone deficiency (GHD) syndrome. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: Sweat secretion rate (SSR), as measured by pilocarpine iontophoresis represents the maximal capacity for stimulated sweat secretion in a localized skin area. SSR was studied in 37 patients with a history of acromegaly, 20 adult patients with GHD before and during long-term GH substitution of GHD adults, and 58 control subjects. RESULTS: Acromegaly: Patients with acromegaly had significa…

Small cell sweat gland carcinoma in childhood.

Sweat gland carcinomas are rare skin tumors that typically occur in older patients. The spectrum of their clinical and pathologic features is broad, and many different types of sweat gland carcinomas have been described, ranging from fairly indolent to highly aggressive neoplasms. We present two cases of sweat gland carcinoma with a predominant small cell morphology. Both tumors occurred in children. One lesion developed in an 8-year-old girl as an asymptomatic papule on her left forearm, which ultimately was evaluated using biopsy because of rapid growth and change in color. The other lesion …

Eruptive clear cell hamartoma of sweat duct.

A histologically unique condition of the sweat duct was found in a miliaria-like papular eruption on the extensor surfaces of extremities of a 41-year-old female patient. The hypertrophic epithelium of the sweat duct wall consisted of extensively vacuolated clear cells. There was mild hyperkeratosis around the sweat duct orifice. The eccrine gland cells showed only partial vacuolization. Since this condition is not related to any of the other known benign changes of the eccrine duct, we report it with a presumptive descriptive diagnosis of eruptive clear cell hamartoma of sweat duct.

Demonstration of sweat allergy in cholinergic urticaria.

Twenty patients with cholinergic urticaria, 11 sex- and age-unmatched patients with acute or chronic urticaria and 20 sex- and age-matched non-atopic control subjects were skin tested with autologous sweat. All cholinergic urticaria patients showed positive immediate-type skin reactions at 2(0)-2(9) dilutions of sweat (geometric mean of maximal positive dilutions +/- S.D. was 2(4.6 +/- 2.6), while in acute and chronic urticaria only three patients showed positive reactions at low dilutions (two 2(0) and one 2(1)) and none of 20 controls showed positive reactions. Prausnitz-Küstner (P-K) tests …

Proliferating trichilemmal tumor with apocrine sweat glands.

A 43-year-old man with a proliferating trichilemmal tumor is described. Since the tumor had appeared on a pre-existing alopecia and accompanied ectopic apocrine sweat glands, it is supposed that the pathogenesis of the tumor of our patient might be similar to that of an organoid nevus.

Secretory immunoglobulin A in sweat gland tumors.

The presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and secretory component (SC) was investigated in normal human skin and in cutaneous neoplasms including a variety of sweat gland tumors. Immunohistochemistry in normal sweat glands revealed the occurrence of secretory IgA (sIgA) as indicated by reactivity for IgA and SC in serial sections. The majority of 28 cases of sweat gland tumors could be demonstrated to retain their ability to produce IgA and SC. In normal as well as in neoplastic sweat glands heaviest staining for sIgA could be found in the lumina and at the surface of lining epithelia. This is co…

Familial meconium ileus with normal sweat electrolytes.

Meconium ileus (MeI) is the presenting symptom in 10 to 15 percent of infants with cystic fibrosis (CF), but it is a rare phenomenon in patients who do not have this disease. We report four Bedouin siblings who had MeI with no laboratory evidence of CF.
