We challenged to identify the cutoff value of cTnT in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients by point of care assessment way. A single center, prospective cross-sectional study was planned and performed. 201 consecutive patients who were visited emergency room for chest symptoms were enrolled in this study. All patients were performed routine practice for differential diagnosis of chest symptom by cardiologist. Simultaneously, semiquantitative measurement of cTnT was performed using same blood sampling on the blind condition to cardiologists for this study. Study patients were divided into four

Progress in personalised psychiatry is dependent on researchers having access to systematic and accurately acquired symptom data across clinical diagnoses. We have developed a structured psychiatric assessment tool, OPCRIT+, that is being introduced into the electronic medical records system of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust which can help to achieve this. In this report we examine the utility of the symptom data being collected with the tool. Cross-sectional mental state data from a mixed-diagnostic cohort of 876 inpatients was subjected to a principal components analysis

Continuing a previous review on problems and strategies for the assessment of negative response bias (Fortschr Neurol Psychiatr 2002;70:126-138), an update on research published from 2002 to 2005 is provided. More than 400 journal articles were included in the analysis, It was found that symptom validity tests or effort tests are generally accepted as the one method which is best developed for the assessment of negative response bias. Other methods, including questionnaires and rating methods, are reviewed. Three important applications of symptom validity assessment are analysed in some more d

Less well-known among the psychiatric disorders, dissociation is one of the most common underlying symptoms of individuals seeking mental health care (Maldonado, 2001). Closely associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation characteristics may include inconsistent consciousness, autobiographical forgetfulness, difficulties in self-regulation, regressions, alternate identities, disorganization in the development of a cohesive sense of self, depersonalization, and derealization (Trickett, Noll, Reiffman & Putnam, 2001). The major constructs and dimensions of the dissociative sympto

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of specific tools to assess the complex symptom clusters experienced by patients after unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE) surgery for lumbar degenerative disease (LDD), particularly from the multidimensional perspective of the Symptom Experience Model.
AIMS: This study aimed to develop and validate a new symptom cluster assessment scale for LDD patients following UBE surgery, based on the Symptom Experience Model.
METHODS: The initial scale items were developed through a systematic literature review, Delphi expert consultation, and patient cognitive interviews. C

Overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) is a prevalent condition that affects the elderly population in particular and significantly impairs quality of life. Imperatorin, a naturally occurring furocoumarin, possesses diverse pharmacological properties that warrant consideration for drug development. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of imperatorin (IMP) to attenuate the cystometric and biochemical changes typically associated with retinyl acetate-induced overactive bladder (OAB) and to assess its viability as a pharmacological intervention for OAB patients. A total of 60 rats we

Cognitive symptoms occur in almost all patients with brain tumors at varying points in the disease course. Deficits in neurocognitive function may be caused by the tumor itself, treatment (surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy), or other complicating factors (e.g., seizures, fatigue, mood disturbance) and can have a profound effect on functional independence and quality of life. Assessment of neurocognitive function is an important part of comprehensive care of patients with brain tumors. In the neuro-oncology clinic, assessment may include cognitive screening tools and inquiry into subjective c

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common disorder characterized by a preoccupation with nonexistent or slight defects in appearance. BDD usually begins during childhood or adolescence. The preoccupation with the perceived appearance defect typically occurs for many hours a day and is often followed by repetitive behaviours (for example mirror checking and skin picking). The weighted prevalence of BDD in a community sample is around 2%, but it is higher in clinical settings and in cosmetic and dermatological settings. BDD leads to significant distress and/or impairment at work or s

BACKGROUND: Negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA) in the early postpartum period have been associated with postpartum depressive symptoms, but the exact relationship is not well understood. This study aimed to determine if NA and PA in the immediate postpartum period predicted postpartum depressive symptoms over and above well-established predictors (previous trauma, history of depression).
METHODS: Participants were prospectively recruited from a Mother-Baby Unit at a large Midwestern academic medical center in the United States from April 2011 to April 2014. Participants (N=526) com

Diagnosis of testis torsion relies on the clinical wisdom of the examining physician, supplemented with timely imaging techniques by color Doppler examination or scintigraphy. A knowledge of the pathophysiology of acute scrotal conditions can help to eliminate diagnostic errors but the literature demonstrates that errors can occur even with sophisticated testing. Data from the literature suggests that manual detorsion of the testis can successfully relieve ischemia until surgical correction can eliminate the possibility of testis torsion. Surgical therapy has progressively improved and can sav
