The estimated lifetime risk of acquiring a dermatophyte infection is between 10 and 20 percent. Recognition and appropriate treatment of these infections reduces both morbidity and discomfort and lessens the possibility of transmission. Dermatophyte infections are classified according to the affected body site, such as tinea capitis (scalp), tinea barbae (beard area), tinea corporis (skin other than bearded area, scalp, groin, hands or feet), tinea cruris (groin, perineum and perineal areas), tinea pedis (feet), tinea manuum (hands) and tinea unguium (nails). To determine the best treatment ap

When the decision was made to euthanatize an acutely laminitic Thoroughbred broodmare, graduate students from the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry reconstructed the skeleton for use as a teaching tool. The reproductive and gastrointestinal tracts were removed and preserved in formalin. The hide, muscle, tendons, ligaments, and organs were removed, and the bones were boiled in water for > or = 48 h to remove all remaining tissue. After boiling, the bones were soaked in gasoline to remove fat from the marrow cavities and then soaked in a bleach/detergent mixture as a final cleaning ste

The use of a heart sound simulator in teaching recognition of heart sounds was tested in 37 graduate students. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups; one group received both auditory and tactile cues and the other group received only auditory cues. Students were tested at three times: (1) before use of the simulator, (2) after a short teaching session using the simulator, and (3) 2 weeks later. Recognition of heart sounds increased significantly after the teaching session with the simulator, and this knowledge was retained. There was no difference in sound recognition between the two

Earache, a common symptom in children, causes many parents to seek medical attention. Aside from trauma and the discomfort that often accompanies viral infections of the upper respiratory tract, acute otitis media with effusion is the commonest cause of otalgia in infants and children. Proper management requires a team effort between the physician and the child's parents or caretaker. The physician must transmit to the parents a concise but thorough overview of the problem and a plan for management. This should include information on the pathophysiology of ear disease, its incidence, therapy a

BACKGROUND: Surgical skills acquisition in cardiac surgery requires consistent and hard practice. Furthermore, training using cadaver is advocated as a means of transferring learned skills to the operating room and recreate surgical situations for trainees to practice and hone their skills. We expose our experience in training for cardiac surgical procedures using human cadavers.
METHODS: From June 2013 to November 2016, we performed 302 cardiac surgical procedures on 50 human cadavers obtained according to the Ivorian laws in force. Cadavers were preserved in 10% formaldehyde and by cryopres

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most common esophageal disease. Besides the typical presentation of heartburn and acid regurgitation, either alone or in combination, GERD can cause atypical symptoms. An estimated 20 to 60 percent of patients with GERD have head and neck symptoms without any appreciable heartburn. While the most common head and neck symptom is a globus sensation (a lump in the throat), the head and neck manifestations can be diverse and may be misleading in the initial work-up. Thus, a high index of suspicion is required. Laryngoscopy can confirm the diagnosis of

A goal of all instruction is to efficiently allocate time spent teaching -- balancing redundancy that enhances learning with redundancy that is irrelevant to increasing student understanding. Efficient allocation of time allows the instructor to present additional material and go into more detail about the information being presented. Here we borrow laboratory research on concept formation and apply these formal principles in teaching introductory neuroanatomy within a lecture course on Behavioral Neuroscience. Concept formation is taught by pairing multiple stimuli, for instance brain name, l

BACKGROUND: Effective retraining programs for medical caregivers (i.e., patient care assistants who primarily assist nurses with daily patient care) are critical to ensuring patient safety and care quality. However, traditional lecture-based methods often fail to promote durable knowledge retention and skill application. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a retraining program integrating the Teach-Back method with the Know-Want to know-Learned (KWL) strategy and loose-leaf teaching materials.
METHODS: Medical caregivers undergoing retraining at a hospital between January…

Communication is a major problem in the management of patients. Miscommunication occurs frequently in populations with low reading skills, illiteracy does not completely account for the observed low rates of recall of communicated information. Transmission of the message also plays an important role. Successful strategies to improve communication with patients include the use of videotapes, videotape modeling or cartoon illustrations. Do these products communicate effectively because they overcome illiteracy or because they also transmit a very clear message? Can good transmission of messages

Mitral valve prolapse is a pathologic anatomic and physiologic abnormality of the mitral valve apparatus affecting mitral leaflet motion. "Mitral valve prolapse syndrome" is a term often used to describe a constellation of mitral valve prolapse and associated symptoms or other physical abnormalities such as autonomic dysfunction, palpitations and pectus excavatum. The importance of recognizing that mitral valve prolapse may occur as an isolated disorder or with other coincident findings has led to the use of both terms. Mitral valve prolapse syndrome, which occurs in 3 to 6 percent of American

Lumbar spine stenosis most commonly affects the middle-aged and elderly population. Entrapment of the cauda equina roots by hypertrophy of the osseous and soft tissue structures surrounding the lumbar spinal canal is often associated with incapacitating pain in the back and lower extremities, difficulty ambulating, leg paresthesias and weakness and, in severe cases, bowel or bladder disturbances. The characteristic syndrome associated with lumbar stenosis is termed neurogenic intermittent claudication. This condition must be differentiated from true claudication, which is caused by atheroscler

The risks of bicycle riding are greatly increased at night, especially if the cyclist does not have lights. Over 13 winter weeks a community behavioural intervention promoting cycle light use was implemented in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, at two tertiary educational institutions. A third location served as a control. Baseline data from inspection of parked cycles and street observation of cycle riders showed that about 60% of cycles were not fitted with lights and between 40% and 60% of cyclists rode without legal lights, with the percentages varying as functions of sunset time, wea

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Adequate understanding of health information has been shown to be a stronger determinant of health than several demographic factors, including age, income, or employment status. However, existing neurosurgical patient education materials (PEMs) may be too complex for the average American and may contribute to poor health literacy. Large language model chatbots may provide a rapid and low-cost means of rewriting existing PEMs at a lower reading level to improve patient understanding and overall health literacy.
METHODS: Neurosurgical PEMs pertaining to stroke, lamine

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dry eye disease (DED) is an exceedingly common diagnosis in patients, yet recent analyses have demonstrated patient education materials (PEMs) on DED to be of low quality and readability. Our study evaluated the utility and performance of three large language models (LLMs) in enhancing and generating new patient education materials (PEMs) on dry eye disease (DED).
SUBJECTS/METHODS: We evaluated PEMs generated by ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, Gemini Advanced, using three separate prompts. Prompts A and B requested they generate PEMs on DED, with Prompt B specifying a 6th-grade

Patient education plays an important role in empowering patients who have allergic contact dermatitis. Having the knowledge about a disease process does not guarantee healthy behaviors. Through careful assessment of educational needs, awareness of stages of change that adults go through, and use of resources available to members of the American Contact Dermatology Society, nurses can provide patient education that completes the patch testing process.
