A review of technologies and sorbent materials for multi-pollutant gas removal.

Industrial flue gases contain multiple pollutants such as SO2, NOₓ, mercury, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds, each posing environmental and health risks. Traditional emission control systems treat these pollutants individually, often resulting in high costs, operational complexity, and large equipment footprints. This review presents an overview of the major flue gas pollutants and summarizes recent advances in multi-pollutant control technologies and sorbent materials. It focuses on regulated gas-phase air pollutants, with CO2 mentioned only where sorbent chemistry overlaps

Business model innovation in the water sector in developing countries.

Various technologies have been deployed in household devices or micro-water treatment plants for mitigating fluoride and arsenic, and thereby provide safe and affordable drinking water in low-income countries. While the technologies have improved considerably, organizations still face challenges in making them financially sustainable. Financial sustainability questions the business models behind these water technologies. This article makes three contributions to business models in the context of fluoride and arsenic mitigation. Firstly, we describe four business models: A) low-value devices gi

Ameliorating the effect and mechanism of chitosan oligosaccharide on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice.

Previous studies have found that chitosan oligosaccharide (COST) can alleviate the clinical symptoms in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. We intend to intervene with different concentrations of COST in mice with NAFLD induced by a high fat diet. The basic effect of COST on NAFLD model mice was observed using physiological and biochemical indexes. 16S rRNA sequencing technology was used to analyze the gut microbiota and further analyze the content of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Western blot and RT-PCR were used to detect the effects of COST on the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling

Economic evaluation of the manufacturing of 3D-printed wrist orthoses vs low temperature thermoplastic wrist orthoses.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a new manufacturing technique of custom-fitted orthoses, showing comparable stability, and wearing comfort than traditional orthoses. However, there is a paucity of data on economic aspects of the manufacturing of 3D-printed orthoses (3DPOs). The aim of this study is to economically evaluate the manufacturing process of 3DPOs compared to conventional low-temperature thermoplastic orthoses (LTTOs) in a clinical setting. METHODS: A prospective cost minimisation analysis from a healthcare provider perspective was conducte

[Economic impact of cardiac resynchronization therapy in patients with heart failure. Available evidence and evaluation of the CRT-Eucomed model for analysis of cost-effectiveness].

Several clinical trials show that cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in patients with moderate-severe heart failure increases survival, improves quality of life and reduces hospital admissions. The high cost of this new technology, incurred by health organizations at the moment of the implant, requires to assess whether its use is economically rational for the Italian Health Service. The paper summarizes evidences of the impact of CRT on the use of hospital resources and on quality of life, and presents a model to calculate incremental costs per quality adjusted life years (QALYs) gained

Assessment of eight nucleic acid amplification technologies for potential use to detect infectious agents in low-resource settings.

Nucleic acid amplification technologies (NAATs) are high-performance tools for rapidly and accurately detecting infectious agents. They are widely used in high-income countries to diagnose disease and improve patient care. The complexities associated with test methods, reagents, equipment, quality control and assurance require dedicated laboratories with trained staff, which can exclude their use in low-resource and decentralized healthcare settings. For certain diseases, fully integrated NAAT devices and assays are available for use in environmentally-controlled clinics or emergency rooms whe

Multiple recognition elements in biosensors: A review of antibiotic detection technologies.

Due to their bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects, antibiotics are widely used in the prevention and treatment of human and animal diseases. However, their irrational utilization has caused severe environmental pollution and threatened human health and safety through food chain. Given the critical limitations of traditional antibiotic detection methods, such as high costs, technical complexity, and time-consuming operations, it is essential to develop robust, accurate, sensitive, and field-deployable technologies for antibiotic detection. In recent years, biosensors have emerged as powerful

Longitudinal adoption of robotic surgery and changes in prostate cancer care delivery: a 10-year institutional case study.

High-cost medical technologies are usually evaluated by clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness, while their organizational effects are less often examined. We conducted a 10-year longitudinal institutional case study (2012-2022) of 395 prostate cancer procedures, combining process tracing, descriptive quantitative trends, implementation records, and workflow documentation. Three quantitative indicators were examined across four adoption stages: procedural volume, biopsy-free surgery, and final pathological confirmation. Biopsy-free surgery increased from 13 of 55 procedures (23.6%) during ex

Solution patterning of ultrafine ITO and ZnRh₂O₄ nanowire array below 20 nm without etching process.

Transparent conductive patterns have significant applications in various optoelectronic devices. A low cost solution process to directly fabricate transparent conductive oxide nanopatterns was developed without a conventional lithographic or etching process. A uniform and high density array of ITO and ZnRh(2)O(4) nanopatterns was fabricated with block copolymer self-assembly and spin coating technology. A low resistivity of about 3-9 × 10(-4)Ω cm and high transmission of 90% in the visible spectrum region was demonstrated with uniform ITO nanopatterns with feature size of 24 nm. The first p-ty

Completely Non-Fused Low-Cost Acceptor Enables Organic Photovoltaic Cells with 17 % Efficiency.

To meet the industrial requirements of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells, it is imperative to accelerate the development of cost-effective materials. Thiophene-benzene-thiophene central unit-based acceptors possess the advantage of low synthetic cost, while their power conversion efficiency (PCE) is relatively low. Here, by incorporating a para-substituted benzene unit and 1st-position branched alkoxy chains with large steric hindrance, a completely non-fused non-fullerene acceptor, TBT-26, was designed and synthesized. The narrow band gap of 1.38 eV ensures the effective utilization of sunligh

Novel 3D Force Sensors for a Cost-Effective 3D Force Plate for Biomechanical Analysis.

Three-dimensional force plates are important tools for biomechanics discovery and sports performance practice. However, currently, available 3D force plates lack portability and are often cost-prohibitive. To address this, a recently discovered 3D force sensor technology was used in the fabrication of a prototype force plate. Thirteen participants performed bodyweight and weighted lunges and squats on the prototype force plate and a standard 3D force plate positioned in series to compare forces measured by both force plates and validate the technology. For the lunges, there was excellent agree

The application of hydrodynamic cavitation technology and the synergistic effect of hybrid advanced oxidation processes: a review.

Hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) technology induces the formation and rupture of cavitation bubbles through changes in pressure. These processes create localized high-temperature, high-pressure environments and strongly oxidative free radicals. This paper introduces the mechanism of HC. It elaborates on the standalone applications of various hydrodynamic cavitation reactors in specific fields. This study reveals the coupling mechanism of HC with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as ozone (O3), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), photocatalysis and Fenton method. The HC-O3 integrated system has demons

Autonomous screening of groundwater remediation technologies in the subsurface using the In Situ Microcosm Array (ISMA).

The groundwater remediation industry continues to progress towards less expensive, more sustainable in situ remedies. However, in situ treatment requires site-specific performance data that can be difficult or impossible to obtain using conventional laboratory microcosm studies. To improve the representativeness of laboratory scale treatability studies, and aid in remedial technology implementation, we developed the In Situ Microcosm Array (ISMA). This autonomous diagnostic device enables the deployment of 10 flow-through sediment columns within a standard 10-cm groundwater-monitoring well. Su
