The duration of untreated psychosis is associated with social support and temperament.

The duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) has been suggested to be a modifiable factor influencing psychosis outcome. There are many studies on the factors that predict DUP, although with contradictory findings. Although temperament has been associated with seeking help in other pathologies, studies about how temperament influences DUP are lacking. This study explored the role of temperament (measured by the Eysenck Personality Inventory Questionnaire) on DUP and tested the hypothesis that social support modifies the effects of neuroticism and extraversion on DUP. We evaluated 97 first-episode…

A meta-analysis of temperament in axis I psychiatric disorders.

This article reports on a meta-analysis of Cloninger's temperament dimensions (novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, and persistence) in individuals with lifetime psychiatric disorders compared with controls and on interdisorder comparisons between these disorders. Nine disorders from 75 studies were included in the meta-analyses. The most consistent feature was elevated harm avoidance: compared with the controls, harm avoidance was higher in all diagnostic groups studied except for those with alcohol use disorders. The increase in effect sizes in harm avoidance scores varied fro…

Predominant polarity and temperament in bipolar and unipolar affective disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, the concept of predominant polarity (two-thirds of episodes belonging to a single pole of the illness) has been introduced to further characterise subtypes of bipolar disorders. This concept has been proven to have diagnostic and therapeutic implications, but little is known on the underlying psychopathology and temperaments. With this study, we aimed to further validate the concept and explore its relationships with temperament. METHODS: This study enrolled 143 patients with bipolar or unipolar disorder. We analysed predominant polarity in the sample of bipolar I pati…

Relationship of temperament and perceptions of nonshared environment in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Examine the relationship between temperament variables and perceptions of nonshared environment as they relate to bulimia nervosa. METHOD: Fifty-seven adult women completed the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire and the Sibling Inventory of Differential Experience. These measures provided assessments of frequently studied temperament traits as well as nonshared environmental factors believed to be associated with psychopathology and temperament. RESULTS: Bulimic subjects showed higher levels of harm avoidance than did control subjects. Also, bulimic subjects perceived their …

Early-childhood temperament deviations mark psychiatric risk into early adulthood.

Early-childhood temperament is associated with mental health outcomes decades later. Temperament reflects early-emerging individual differences in emotional and behavioral tendencies. These differences are relatively stable across development and shaped by both genetic and environmental influences. However, the consequences of departures from expected developmental trajectories remain largely unexplored. Using data from more than 50,000 children in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study, we modeled longitudinal temperament trajectories at 1.5, 3, and 5 years of age and quantified …

Dominant depressive temperament and psychological resilience in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptom severity and psychological resilience within the framework of dominant depressive temperament (DDT). METHODS: A total of 129 patients with OCD were assessed using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), and the TEMPS-A questionnaire for temperament evaluation. Participants were classified as having DDT based on both established cut-off scores and standardized z-scores for the depressive subscale. Depression and anxiety levels were measured with…

Temperament, anxiety, and depression in school-age children who stutter.

PURPOSE: The main aim of this study was to gain insight into whether temperament and/or stuttering severity were associated with anxiety and depression in children who stutter. Additionally, the study also provided an indication into the prevalence of anxiety and depression in children who stutter in a clinical cohort. METHOD: The participants were 132 English-speaking children (105 boys and 27 girls) between 9;0 and 14;11 years old (M = 11;8, SD = 1;10) and their mothers. At their first visit to a specialist center for children who stutter, mothers and children completed the relevant version…

Temperament in Adulthood Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder without Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether some temperamental traits would be associated with persistence of attention deficit-hyperacitivty disorder (ADHD) in adulthood independent from bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS: Eighty-one ADHD patients without a comorbid diagnosis of BD were divided into two groups, those with childhood ADHD (n=46), and those with Adulthood ADHD (n=35). The severity of childhood and adulthood ADHD were assessed by using the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS-25) and Turgay's Adult ADD/ADHD Diagnosis and Evaluation Scale (DES). Subjects' temperamental characteristics were examined usi…

Abnormal temperament in patients with morbid obesity seeking surgical treatment.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and its related disorders are growing epidemic across the world. Research on links between the bipolar spectrum and obesity has proliferated in the last few years. As some forms of abnormal temperament are considered as subtypes of the soft bipolar spectrum, we aimed to evaluate abnormal temperaments in morbidly obese patients. METHODS: Using a short version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego, we investigated abnormal depressive, cyclothymic, hyperthymic, irritable or anxious temperament in 213 patients with morbid obesity compared to a con…

Binge drinking among adolescents: role of temperament, family environment and peers.

OBJECTIVES: Adolescence is a development stage between childhood and adulthood, which involves the intense physical, mental, and social development of a person. Adolescents are at risk of engaging in risky behaviours, most notably the use of psychoactive substances, including binge drinking. Factors involving family, peers and individual differences may protect this age group from or put them at risk of abusing alcohol. The aim of the study was to describe the relation between temperament, family and peer factors, and the frequency of binge drinking among adolescents. METHODS: The survey was …

Cyclothymic temperament and glucose metabolism in the right superior parietal lobule.

Cyclothymic temperament possesses a central dimension that includes rapid fluctuations in mood and emotional instability, and it is regarded as a prodromal state of bipolar disorder. The aim of the present study is to explore the neural correlates of cyclothymic temperament. We used the data of 55 healthy participants in our previous study and analyzed the association between cyclothymic temperament scores rated by the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) and the uptake of [18F]-FDG measured by positron emission tomography (PET). A whole brai…

Temperament and Social-Emotional Difficulties: The Dark Side of Learning Disabilities.

The authors compared the relations between general psychological difficulties and dimensions of temperament in children with and without learning disability (LD). The main aim was to analyze whether and to what extent children's temperament dimensions contribute to their general psychological difficulties when LD diagnosis, age, and gender are taken into account. Participants were 52 elementary school children 7-11 years old (M age = 8.61 years, SD = 1.21 years). Twenty-six of them had been diagnosed with LD. Six teachers rated their pupils with and without LD in relation to their general psyc…

Prenatal maternal mood patterns predict child temperament and adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: This study quantifies the dynamics of maternal mood focusing on unpredictability, and to assess if greater unpredictability of prenatal maternal mood predicts child temperament and internalizing symptoms through early adolescence. METHODS: The association between prenatal mood predictability and child internalizing symptoms were assessed in two longitudinal cohorts (N's = 227 and 180). Maternal mood was assessed repeatedly during pregnancy as early as 15 weeks' gestation. Predictability of maternal mood was calculated by applying Shannon's entropy to the distribution of responses …

Temperament Distinguishes Persistent/Recurrent from Remitting Anxiety Disorders Across Early Childhood.

Up to 20% of preschool-age children meet criteria for anxiety disorders and, for a large subset, anxiety appears to persist throughout early childhood. However, little is known about which factors predict persistence/recurrence of anxiety in young children. Temperament, including behavioral inhibition (BI), negative emotionality (NE), and positive emotionality (PE), predict the onset of anxiety disorders, but to our knowledge no study has examined whether temperament predicts the course of anxiety in young children. From a community sample of 3-year-olds, we identified 89 children (79.8% White…
