BACKGROUND: Blacks are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage of colorectal cancer (CRC), and have poorer survival than Whites. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is usually curable when diagnosed at an early stage. OBJECTIVES: We compare the use of CRC tests for screening between Whites and Blacks and compare the use of CRC tests for either screening or diagnosis and further check the test results for a diagnosis of CRC. Serological survey and active surveillance for La Crosse virus infections among children in Tennessee.

In 1998 and 1999, we performed a serosurvey and active surveillance for La Crosse encephalitis at a children's hospital in eastern Tennessee. Fifteen cases of La Crosse encephalitis were confirmed. Only 5 (0.5%) of 1000 serum samples being tested at the state laboratory for other diseases had evidence of antibodies to La Crosse virus. These findings suggest that La Crosse virus is newly endemic to eastern Tennessee.

St. Louis encephalitis in Memphis-Shelby County, Tennessee, 1975: epidemiologic aspects of human cases.

An epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in Memphis-Shelby County, Tennessee, in the summer of 1975, as part of an outbreak involving large portions of the Eastern United States. A total of 187 suspected cases were reported, of which 62 were laboratory-confirmed or presumptive SLE. The overall attack rate was 8.1/100,000; rates were higher in lower socioeconomic districts. The case fatality rate was 19.4%. Climatologic data and related factors favoring the occurrence of this outbreak are discussed.

Infection by Tickborne Bacterium Candidatus Midichloria Associated with First Trimester Pregnancy Loss, Tennessee, USA.

A previously healthy 26-year-old woman in middle Tennessee, USA, experienced a first trimester pregnancy loss after multiple tick bites. Histopathology, 16S rRNA sequencing, and electron microscopy examination of the products of conception revealed an infection by a bacterium within the Candidatus Midichloria genus.

Salmonella sp. infections are associated with contaminated low-moisture foods (with high fat content) with increasing frequency. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Tennessee, which was isolated from tahini (a paste made from ground sesame seeds) purchased at a local retailer in Berlin, Germany.

Serologic Survey of Toxoplasma gondii in Black Bears (Ursus americanus) from Eastern Tennessee, USA.

The modified agglutination test was used to study Toxoplasma gondii exposure in 70 eastern Tennessee, US, black bears (Ursus americanus) from 2015 to 2017. Overall, 74% (52/70) of bears were seropositive, and T. gondii was more prevalent in adults than subadults.
