Turning Rattling Motions from Phonon Scatterers to Thermal Conductivity Enhancers in Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks.

Conventional rattling motions of guest species in porous materials suppress the thermal conductivity by scattering phonons. Here, we demonstrate a paradigm shift: rattling can be engineered into a thermal conductivity enhancer. Using molecular dynamics and phonon analysis of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (TCF-1) loaded with xenon, we show that strengthening the host-guest interaction drives a transition from long-range diffusive (off-center) to localized (on-center) rattling. Reducing the guest mass in the on-center regime further intensifies localization. Both strategies boost thermal c

Alloy Disordering Effects on the Thermal Conductivity and Energy Gap Temperature Dependence of Cd1-xZnxSe Ternary Crystals Grown by the Bridgman Method.

Investigated in this work, Cd1-xZnxSe-mixed ternary compounds were grown by the Bridgman method. Several compounds with zinc content varying in the range 0 < x < 1 were produced between two binary parents, CdSe and ZnSe crystals. Using the SEM/EDS technique, the accurate composition of formed crystals was determined along the growth axis. Thanks to that, the grown crystals' axial and radial uniformity were determined. Characterization of the optical and thermal properties was undertaken. The energy gap was measured using photoluminescence spectroscopy for different compositions and temperature

Thermal effect of photolysis in 203Hg, 35S and 131I labeled mercury (II) iodide thiocyanate powders.

203Hg, 35S or 131I labeled mercury (II) iodide thiocyanate (HgISCN) powders were prepared, respectively. When the powders were exposed to sunlight, some parts of the crystals of the powders were decomposed and the decomposed atoms diffused toward crystal surface. This diffusion velocity was accelerated by thermal treatment of the darkened powders. The velocity is larger in order of 35S, 203Hg, 131I. Decomposed products consist of colloidal mercury, mercury iodide, mercury sulfide, sulfur dioxide and iodine. Mechanism of photochromism of HgISCN was discussed.

Hierarchical Tantalum Oxide Composite for Efficient Solar-Driven Water Purification.

Applying solar energy to generate drinking water is a clean and low-energy exhaust route to address the issue of water purification. The current challenge with solar vapor generation is constructing nano/micro-hierarchical structures that can convert solar irradiation into exploitable thermal energy with high efficiency. Although various structures and material designs have been reported in recent years, solar vapor conversion can be improved by integrating light harvesting, thermal concentration, and water diffusion. Because of the optimized solar harvesting, enhanced heat capacity, and speci

Interfacial Plating Driving Convection-Like Motion of a Sandwiched Nanocrystal.

In crystalline solids, thermally driven atomic fluxes are generally linked to surface reshaping or coarsening, not sustained translation of an intact crystal. We show that when nanoscale Cu, Ag, and Al crystals are confined between two plates and subjected to axial temperature gradients approaching 108 K m-1, they sustain a persistent, convection-like bidirectional mass flow. Thermo-mechanical-induced surface migration transports atoms from the hot end to the cold end, where interfacial insertion generates a self-regulated compressive back stress of up to 102 MPa-sufficient to push the crystal

Computational and machine learning analysis of bio-convective magnetized Ree-Eyring nanofluid flow on Riga plate with thermal radiation and activation energy.

This work examines bio-convective magnetized Ree-Eyring nanofluid flow on a convectively heated Riga surface. Thermal diffusion is controlled through use of Cattaneo-Christov thermal flux and Brownian motion effects along with thermal radiations. The flow is also affected by Darcy-Forchheimer model, activation energy and presence of microorganisms. The leading equations have valuated initially using bvp4c technique. The obtained set from this numerical technique is then used as a dataset to implement ANN technique in current problem. It has deduced in this work that, optimal Mean Squared Error…

Diffusion Properties of C9 Petroleum Resin in Porous γ-Al2O3: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

C9 petroleum resin hydrogenation is a classic macromolecular heterogeneous catalyzed reaction that can markedly improve the material's thermal stability and compatibility. The diffusion of these macromolecules within the catalyst pores significantly influences the mass transfer there and the overall hydrogenation process. However, due to experimental limitations, the diffusivity of reactants in the pores remains challenging to determine, which affects the accurate design and operation of the catalytic reaction process. A more realistic model of γ-Al2O3 was developed by incorporating atomic cha

Disentangling Multiscale Cation-Anion Dynamics in Li4(BH4)(NH2)3 Using Quasielastic Neutron Scattering.

Elucidating the interplay between anion dynamics and cation transport is essential for the rational design of solid-state ionic conductors. Here, we investigate the relationship between local anion motion and long-range Li + transport in Li 4 ( BH 4 ) ( NH 2 ) 3 by combining quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and neutron spin-echo (NSE) spectroscopy with complementary thermal, structural, and electrochemical investigations. Time-of-flight QENS analysis reveals ultrafast reorientational motion of [ BH 4 ] - units within the crystalline lattice, characterized b

Thermal conductance of atomic-scale glass reaches 40% of quantum limit.

Heat dissipation limits the performance of nanoscale electronic and quantum devices, yet the fundamental limits of phonon-mediated heat transport at the atomic scale remains unknown. By contrast, atomic-scale electron transport has been extensively studied over the past decades using electronic break-junction platforms. Here we show a custom-fabricated, picowatt-resolution scanning thermal probe that uses thermal feedback to create phononic break junctions at the ultimate atomic scale. We report the formation of atomic junctions of amorphous silicon dioxide (a-SiO2)-an archetypal glass-capturi

Thermal damage of the specimen during breast biopsy with the use of the Breast Lesion Excision System: does it affect diagnosis?

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic vacuum assisted breast biopsy (VABB) procedures remain of key importance in the diagnostic evaluation of suspicious non-palpable mammographic lesions. The Breast Lesion Excision System(®) (BLES) is an image-guided percutaneous biopsy method that utilizes radiofrequency (RF) in order to retrieve an intact-tissue biopsy specimen. The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of RF application on the tissue specimen and the possible interference with the histopathologic results. METHODS: In this study we included 265 patients with suspicious non-palpable mammogra

Correlations between changes in indicators of gastric mucosal barrier integrity at time of exposure to "barrier breakers" and extent of hemorrhagic erosions one hour later.

We have examined the effects of seven different "barrier breakers" (including ethanol, aspirin, salicylic acid, isobutyric acid, Na taurocholate, thermal injury, and hyperosmotic glucose) on chambered gastric mucosae of rats in an attempt to identify variations in accepted indicators of mucosal barrier integrity which would accurately predict the extent of subsequent hemorrhagic erosion. When results from all experimental groups were considered, only the initial decrease in transmucosal potential difference (PD) showed significant correlation with final damage (lesion area). When the results w

Enhancing Structural Stability and Kinetics of Ni-Rich Cathodes via Synergistic Bulk and Interface Optimization.

Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM, x ≥ 0.8) suffer from concurrent structural instability, interfacial degradation caused by residual lithium, and sluggish Li+ diffusion kinetics, which severely limit their application in high-energy lithium-ion batteries. Although extensive efforts have been devoted to addressing these issues, strategies capable of concurrently regulating the bulk structure, surface chemistry, and Li+ diffusion kinetics in a simple and scalable manner remain limited. Herein, a simple Ti and Nb comodification strategy via secondary calcination is proposed t

Actomyosin Fluctuations Couple Temperature to Intracellular Transport and ELPV Phase Separation.

How living cells transduce thermal perturbations into altered intracellular organization remains a fundamental biophysical question. Here, using single-particle tracking of quantum dot (QD) diffusion and endocytic vesicle transport, we show that temperature-enhanced transport is not a simple passive solvent effect; instead, heating enhances active cytoplasmic dynamics mediated by myosin-II-dependent actomyosin activity. While active fluctuations enhance random QD diffusion, they also accelerate active vesicular transport by reducing its mechanical resistance. Using thermoresponsive elastin-lik

Thermo-optical characterization of cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) quantum dots embedded in biocompatible materials.

Cadmium selenide/zinc sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) core-shell quantum dots (QDs) embedded in biocompatible materials were thermally and optically characterized with a thermal lens (TL) technique. Transient TL measurements were performed with a mode-mismatched, dual-beam (excitation and probe) configuration. A thermo-optical study of the CdSe/ZnS QDs was performed for different core diameters (3.5, 4.0, 5.2, and 6.6 nm) in aqueous solution and synthetic saliva, and three different core diameters (2.4, 2.9, and 4.1 nm) embedded in restorative dental resin (0.025% by mass). The thermal diffusivity results

Experimental nerve thermal injury.

Thermal injury to rat sciatic nerve was produced by local heating (47 and 58 degrees C) and studied physiologically and morphologically. Unmyelinated nerve fibres showed a greater direct vulnerability to hyperthermia; first manifest as a reversible conduction block of C fibre action potentials and at higher temperatures by immediate and selective axonal degeneration. By contrast, lower grade nerve thermal injury resulted in delayed, selective loss of myelinated fibres. Evidence from this study suggests that this is secondary to a heat-induced angiopathy, immediately and diffusely manifest in t

Monitoring of tissue optical properties during thermal coagulation of ex vivo tissues.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Real-time monitoring of tissue status during thermal ablation of tumors is critical to ensure complete destruction of tumor mass, while avoiding tissue charring and excessive damage to normal tissues. Currently, magnetic resonance thermometry (MRT), along with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is the most commonly used technique for monitoring and assessing thermal ablation process in soft tissues. MRT/MRI is very expensive, bulky, and often subject to motion artifacts. On the other hand, light propagation within tissue is sensitive to changes in tissue microstructure

Selenium-Rich Conjugated Polymer Additives Enable Enhanced Stability in Perovskite Solar Cells.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties and the unprecedented performance gains achieved in an unprecedentedly short timeframe since their discovery. Among the various strategies to enhance PSC efficiency and stability, polymer additives have proven effective, either by incorporation into the perovskite bulk or by deposition on the surface via antisolvent engineering. Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated polymers, widely studied in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic

Temperature dependent behavior of hydrogen-bonded liquids: bridging experiments with molecular dynamics and DFT.

Temperature strongly influences the structure and dynamics of hydrogen-bonded liquids, with direct implications for their thermodynamic and transport behavior. In this study, we investigate binary mixtures of heptanal with a homologous series of 1-alkanols (C3-C7) by combining experimental measurements with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that increasing temperature progressively disrupts hydrogen-bonded networks, leading to systematic changes in both microscopic organization and macroscopic properties.
