The mediastinal serous cavity (MSC)-well documented but seldom recognized in the caudal mediastinum-is embryologically derived from the omental bursa. Mesothelioma arising from the MSC in two dogs is described. Both dogs presented with acute life-threatening hemorrhagic pleural effusion. Contrast computed tomography revealed a large solitary spherical-to-cylindrical tumor in the caudal mediastinum with variably thick, contrast-enhancing walls with lobular to frond-like proliferations that arose circumferentially and projected internally into a single, variably sized, fluid-attenuating lumen. Mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm caused by asbestos exposure. The majority of mesotheliomas arise from the pleural lining of the thoracic cavity, but also involve the peritoneal and pericardial cavities. Another type of neoplasm referred to as pseudomesotheliomatous adenocarcinoma is rare. Most "pseudomesotheliomas" arise in the pleural tissue of the chest cavity and resemble pleural mesotheliomas, macroscopically and histologically. While most arise in the pleura, there are some that metastasize to the pleura from another site. We evaluated asbestos fiber concentrations in 20 cases of pseudome

PURPOSE: Dumbbell-shaped thoracic tumors represent a distinct type of tumor and involve in both the spinal canal and the posterior thoracic cavity. Successful treatment for the tumors depends on gross total resection (GTR) via an open laminectomy and facetectomy or transthoracic transpleural approach. In this case series, we report our experiments with minimally invasive method for the removal of extradural dumbbell thoracic tumor and present related literature review.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed two patients with dumbbell-shaped thoracic tumors who underwent minimally invasive resec

RATIONALE: The coexistence of the extranidal marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and multiple myeloma (MM) is an exceedingly rare situation. The rare situation precludes any evidence-based guidelines for MZL or MM.
PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: We presented a unique case of the coexistence of primary mediastinal MALT lymphoma and MM like polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, skin syndrome.
INTERVENTIONS AND OUTCOMES: The patient was first diagnosed with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M-protein, skin syndrome in the depa

A 65-year-old man presented with a nonspecific thymic neoplasm following blunt thoracic trauma. The lesion increased in size over 12 years, to reach 47 mm in diameter. After thymectomy, the lesion was described as an epidermoid lining cyst composed of thickened stratified squamous epithelium. We assume that this rare pathological condition was caused by skin tissue islands and fat migrating into the mediastinum.

Chylopericardium usually occurs secondary to trauma, cardiothoracic surgery, radiation therapy, or neoplasm of the mediastinum. Idiopathic chylopericardium is extremely rare. We report a case of primary chylopericardium in a 79-year-old male patient. Although pericardial window and thoracic duct ligation are the treatment of choice, the patient has been doing well for six months since video-assisted thoracoscopic pericardial window.

Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) of the central nervous system are extremely rare; however, they are becoming more prevalent in immunocompromised patients. The authors present the cases of two patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: one with LMS of the thoracic vertebral body and the other with LMS originating from the region of the cavernous sinus. The epidemiological and histological characteristics of LMS and its association with latent Epstein-Barr virus are discussed, as well as the treatments for this neoplasm.

Thymoma is an epithelial neoplasm of the thymus, which commonly lies in the anterior mediastinum and, therefore, an intrathoracic origin is considered to be rare. This report presents a case of giant thymoma arising in the thoracic cavity. A 61-year-old male presented with a chronic cough and breathlessness. Chest CT revealed a well enhanced giant mass approximately 18 cm in diameter in the right thoracic cavity. FDG-PET showed that the SUVmax of the tumor was 5.0 in the center and almost 2.5 in the surrounding area. A trans- bronchial needle biopsy was performed to find atypical cells. Surger

The radiological detection of a thoracic neoplasm is often a straightforward exercise. The differentiation of a benign from a malignant lesion is much more challenging and has met with limited success. Computed tomography (CT) may help to differentiate a benign nodule from a malignant lesion but magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays no part in the evaluation of a coin lesion. Recent studies indicate MRI to be superior in the staging of bronchogenic carcinoma with reference to chest wall infiltration, mediastinal invasion and vascular involvement. It is now known that in the staging of nodal m

Patients with thymoma present rarely even on active thoracic surgery services. These patients may suffer from many associated conditions but the most common is myasthenia gravis. Aggressive surgical resection is the mainstay of initial therapy. Radiation therapy has a role in patients who are left with retained neoplasm after surgical resection. Recurrence may occur at prolonged intervals but should be treated aggressively.

Thymic epithelial tumours (TETs) are rare lesions that represent less than 1% of all malignancies in adults. Presentation occurs in three ways: asymptomatic, with local thoracic symptoms or with paraneoplastic symptoms. Heterotopic ossifications are rare histological features in neoplasms and non-neoplastic lesions. Here, we present a 49-year-old male patient with a thymoma type B2 mimicking an aortic aneurysm. Alongside the thymoma, a cholesterol granuloma with unusual ossification features was found as well. This clinical presentation and pathological diagnosis are unusual findings.

A case of primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is presented. On this occasion, the lymphoma invaded the myocardium, an event which has not previously been reported in the literature. These neoplasms spread by proximity, and invasion of the pericardium, thoracic wall and oesophagus have been described. Our patient died from heart failure. Tumour myocardial infiltration may well have been the determinant cause through various mechanisms, including a decrease in myocardial contractility. Spread into the myocardium may be facilitated by bulky tumour infiltrates in the pleural space.

Thymomas and thymic carcinomas represent rare epithelial-derived thoracic neoplasms that, despite their low incidence, pose significant clinical challenges and impact patient survival. Through collaborative efforts among experts across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, this consensus seeks to provide guidance for the challenging management of advanced-stage thymic epithelial tumors (Stages IIb-IV). Advanced thymic tumors frequently present with local invasion or distant metastases, necessitating multimodal therapeutic approaches incorporating surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and emerging i…

CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old, male castrated cat was presented with lethargy, tachypnea, and pleural and pericardial effusion. Echocardiographic assessment revealed an irregular hyperechoic structure that occupied a large portion of the thoracic cavity, expanding from the pericardium and surrounding the heart. Postmortem evaluation, histopathology and immunohistochemistry for factor VIII-related antigen confirmed the diagnosis of pericardial and splenic hemangiosarcoma.
RELEVANCE AND NOVEL INFORMATION: This case report highlights that hemangiosarcoma, despite being rarely reported, should be co

A 5-y-old, male degu (Octodon degus) was presented with a subcutaneous mass in the ventral aspect of the cervical area. The mass was removed surgically. Histologically, the mass was a densely cellular, expansile neoplasm, with compression of thymic tissue to the periphery. The neoplasm consisted of solid sheets of polygonal cells, mixed with fewer small lymphocytes. Rare Hassall bodies were scattered throughout the mass. Polygonal cells were positive for anti-keratin/cytokeratin AE1/AE3 antibody, and small lymphocytes were positive for anti-CD3 antibody. The histopathologic and immunohistochem

A 60-year-old man developed a left VIth-nerve paralysis and underwent biopsy of an extramedullary plasmacytoma in the sphenoid sinus. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated cytoplasmic IgD and lambda determinants. Subsequent specimens from left clavical and thoracic epidural lesions also showed a plasma cell neoplasm with IgD and lambda determinants. No abnormal plasma cells were found in bone marrow specimens. Lambda Bence-Jones protein and monoclonal IgD-lambda protein in the serum were detected several months after onset. The patient died with disseminated plasmacytoma 1 year after diagnosis. Th

Thoracic surgical oncology involves surgical treatment of lesions of the thoracic wall, pulmonary parenchyma, or mediastinum (also including heart, esophagus, or trachea). The most common neoplasms of the thoracic wall are osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma. Histopathologic type, the use of chemotherapy for osteosarcoma, and completeness of surgical margins are prognostic for survival. Relative to solitary pulmonary masses, carcinomas are most common, with histopathologic type, tumor size, tumor grade, and lymph node status prognostic for survival. Of the aforementioned variables, lymph node stat

While in many cases they are not directly visualized, awareness of the thoracic nerves and their courses at cross-sectional imaging is important for radiologists. An understanding of the normal function of each nerve is important, as many patients present with neurologic signs and symptoms that can be used to reinforce search patterns for disease and detection of supportive radiologic abnormalities. In the case of primary neoplasms, understanding the expected presence of a nerve in the location of a mass can enhance and improve the accuracy of differential diagnoses. Even in the absence of neu

Adult granulosa cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon sex cord-stromal neoplasm of the ovary. It typically demonstrates locoregional spread, and disease outside of the pelvis as metastasis is uncommon. Only a rare case of primary thoracic adult GCT has been documented, and here we describe another occurrence with unusual pulmonary presentation, thereby expanding the anatomic distribution across which adult GCT could potentially arise.
