Three-dimensional analysis of sexual dimorphism in human thoracic vertebrae: implications for the respiratory system and spine morphology.

Sexual dimorphism is important for intraspecific variation and well studied in the human skeleton. In the thoracic part of the spine sexual dimorphism is expected for differences in the respiratory system related to body mass, lung capacity, and energetics, and in the reproductive system for adaptations to pregnancy (lower spine lordosis, posture). However, little is known about sexual dimorphism in this anatomical region. We use three-dimensional (3D)-geometric morphometrics to test hypotheses on sexual dimorphism in the first 10 thoracic vertebrae (T1-T10). Forty-six 3D-landmarks were measur…

Multiple spinous process fractures of the thoracic vertebrae (Clay-Shoveler's Fracture) in a beginning Golfer: a case report.

STUDY DESIGN: A case report. OBJECTIVE: The authors report a unique experience with a 40-year-old male beginning golfer who presented with multiple isolated spinous process fractures of the upper thoracic spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Stress fractures are caused by repetitive loading and overuse, and they account for 10% of all sports-related injuries. Fractures of isolated spinous processes of the cervical and thoracic vertebrae are referred to as Clay-Shoveler's fractures, and there is little clinical information on these injuries. METHODS: A 40-year-old man was admitted to our clini…

[Case of positive identification by digital superimposed comparison between photograph of the thoracic vertebrae front and thorax roentgenograph].

We reported an autopsy case in which an antemortem thorax roentgenograph and a postmortem photograph of thoracic vertebrae front were available for digital superimposed comparison of contour of the vertebral column and provided a positive identification by the characteristic osteophyte formation. In the elderly, the thorax roentgenograph is often stored in medical institution. Osteophyte formation of the vertebral column has individual features with the aging and formed characteristic profiles of the vertebral column. Photographing of a cadaver's thoracic vertebrae front after removing of the …

[Complete fracture-dislocation of thoracic vertebrae 8 and 9 without neurological complications. Description of the injury. Therapeutic deductions].

The author has seen one case of complete fracture dislocation between the 8th and 9th thoracic vertebrae without paraplegia. An analysis of the lesion was made by tomodensitometry. It is concluded that the absence of a lesion of the spinal cord was due to an associated fracture of half of the posterior arch of the 8th thoracic vertebra. The treatment was based on conservative reduction and fixation by a halo cast. A review of the literature has shown only one similar case.

Accuracy of three-dimensionally printed animal-specific drill guides for implant placement in canine thoracic vertebrae: A cadaveric study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of three-dimensionally (3-D) printed drill guides in constraining the trajectory of drill tracts for implants in canine thoracic vertebrae. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental ex vivo study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Five canine thoracic vertebral column specimens. METHODS: Guides to constrain drill trajectories were designed on the basis of computed tomographic (CT) imaging of six thoracic vertebrae (T8-T13) and were 3-D printed. The guides were used to create drill tracts in these vertebrae by both an experienced and a novice surgeon, and CT imaging was repeated. The ent…

Caudal articular process dysplasia of thoracic vertebrae in neurologically normal French bulldogs, English bulldogs, and Pugs: Prevalence and characteristics.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence and anatomical characteristics of thoracic caudal articular process dysplasia in French bulldogs, English bulldogs and Pugs presenting for problems unrelated to spinal disease. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, computed tomography scans of the thoracic vertebral column of these three breeds were reviewed for the presence and location of caudal articular process hypoplasia and aplasia, and compared between breeds. A total of 271 dogs met the inclusion criteria: 108 French bulldogs, 63 English bulldogs, and 100 Pugs. A total of 70

Is fusion to the stable sagittal vertebra necessary to avoid distal junctional kyphosis in thoracic adolescent idiopathic scoliosis?

STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective single-center study. PURPOSE: The purpose is to investigate the incidence of distal junctional kyphosis (DJK) when fused proximal to the stable sagittal vertebra (SSV) in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients undergoing selective thoracic fusion. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive cohort of surgically treated AIS patients with Lenke 1-2 A/B curves between 2011 and 2022 with a minimum of 2 years of follow-up. The SSV was defined as the vertebra bisected by the posterior sacral vertical line on long-standing sagittal radiographs. A

A complex histopathological challenge: suspicion of an osteoblastoma-like osteosarcoma arising from the second thoracic vertebra in a cat.

BACKGROUND: Reports of osteoblastic tumours are limited to a few case reports in veterinary medicine. Osteoblastoma-like osteosarcoma has been accepted by the World Health Organization as an intermediate form between an osteosarcoma and osteoblastoma. This type of tumour indicates an osteosarcoma, that may resemble osteoblastoma clinically, histologically, and radiologically and have the capability for metastasis. Osteoblastoma-like osteosarcoma has not been described in veterinary medicine so far. CASE PRESENTATION: An eight-year old cat was presented due to progressive ataxia and paraparesi

Cryptococcosis of thoracic vertebra simulating tuberculosis: diagnosis by fine-needle aspiration biopsy cytology--a case report.

A rare case of cryptococcosis of sixth thoracic vertebra (T6) along with pulmonary involvement in an old diabetic patient is presented. The infection resulted in lytic lesion of T6 vertebra and girdle pain. A computerized tomographic (CT) guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) cytology was performed, which showed encapsulated fungal spores of Cryptococcus neoformans with granulomatous reaction, later confirmed by fungal culture.

The effect of the gene undulated (un) on the shape of cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae in the house mouse (Mus musculus).

Videodigitised outlines of C6, C7, T1 and T2 vertebrae from 23 mice carrying the mutant gene undulated (un/un) and normal littermates (+/un) have been examined by Fourier analysis. There were large differences in shape between C6 vertebrae, smaller but significant differences in C7 and insignificant differences between T1s. The situation in T2 was complicated by the effects of the genetic background, but the effect of undulated was still significant. We conclude that the undulated gene shows significant pleiotropy in its effects even over this short length of the vertebral column.

A patient with a pulmonary hernia and chance fracture of the thoracic vertebra following a fall: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pulmonary hernia is a rare disease caused mostly by chest trauma. Patients often present with non-specific signs and symptoms. Currently, there is no unified approach to treating it. For asymptomatic pulmonary hernias, conservative treatment has been chosen in the past. However, the increasing number of cases has shown that surgery has a more positive effect on some patients with asymptomatic pulmonary hernias. CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old female patient who accidentally fell from an agricultural vehicle while doing farm work presented with back pain and lower

Parathyroid Adenoma with Unusual Presentations of Rib Bone and Thoracic Vertebrae Fractures in a Premenopausal Female in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Parathyroid adenoma is the most common cause of primary hyperthyroidism which leads to abnormal calcium homeostasis, hypercalcemia, and reduction in bone density. A 37-year-old female referred from a private health facility with a 1-year history of upper back swelling and pain. The pain was worse when sitting down for long periods and with movement and relieved by rest. There was no antecedent history of trauma, but the patient had noticed poor appetite and weight loss. There were no constipation, no abdominal discomfort, and no symptom suggestive of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. General

[Neurologic pathology in butterfly deformities of the body of the mid-thoracic vertebra (clinico-x-ray-anatomic observation)].

Results of the clinico-roentgenological observation of butterfly-like deformity of the middle dorsal vertebra body (a rare congenital anomaly) are presented. In the presence of an infection the patient developed a spinal pathology (lower central paraparesis, parahypesthesia, disturbances of the functions of pelvic organs). The neurological symptoms were found to be due to an adhesive process in the spinal meninges at the level of the deformed vertebra and the secondary compression-ischemic myelopathy. The treatment consisted in injecting prednisolone under the spinal meninges. The patient's ro
