Characteristics of patients admitted to the emergency department due to tick bite.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease endemic in Turkey since 2002. Çorum is one of the leading five cities in Turkey in which CCHF disease is seen most. We studied characteristics of the patients with tick bites in our emergency department (ED) and determined the fatality rate of the disease in city of Çorum for the first time. We retrospectively analysed the characteristics of the patients admitted to our ED from the medical files of 21,680 patients in a 5-year period. The number of patients with definite diagnosis and who have died was determined. Our results demon…

Tick bite protection with permethrin-treated summer-weight clothing.

The number of tick bites received by individuals wearing either permethrin-treated or untreated summer clothing (T-shirt, shorts, socks, and sneakers) was compared during a controlled indoor study. Pathogen-free nymphal Ixodes scapularis Say were placed on the left shoe, right leg, and left arm of 15 (5/treatment group/d) human volunteers wearing untreated outfits or outfits treated with permethrin either commercially or using a do-at-home treatment kit. The number and location of ticks attached to subjects' skin were recorded 2.5 h postinfestation. Subjects wearing outfits treated with permet…

Tick bite fever and Q fever - a South African perspective.

Tick bite fever (TBF) and Q fever are zoonotic infections, highly prevalent in southern Africa, which are caused by different genera of obligate intracellular bacteria. While TBF was first described nearly 100 years ago, it has only recently been discovered that there are several rickettsial species transmitted in southern Africa, the most common of which is Rickettsia africae. This helps to explain the highly variable clinical presentation of TBF, ranging from mild to severe or even fatal, that has always been recognised. Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a protean disease that is prob

Abducens nerve palsy following a tick bite: a case report.

Neuromuscular paralysis caused by salivary proteins of ticks is a well-known complication after tick bites in Australia, North America, and South Africa. Symptoms may include general weakness, difficulty walking, ascending paralysis, and bulbar paralysis with diplopia, culminating in respiratory failure. In Europe, toxin-mediated paralysis has rarely been noted. We report a case of cranial nerve paralysis with delayed onset after a tick bite in northern Germany.

Causes of febrile illnesses after a tick bite in Slovenian children.

BACKGROUND: To establish the etiology in Slovenian children with febrile illnesses occurring after a tick bite. METHODS: Eighty-six febrile patients younger than 15 years referred to our institution in 2001 with a history of a tick bite within 6 weeks before onset of the illness were included in this prospective study. Acute and convalescent serum samples were tested for the presence of antibodies to tick-borne encephalitis virus, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Rickettsia conorii, Babesia microti, Bartonella henselae, Bartonella quintana and

[Tick bite meningoradiculitis and other neurological aspects of Lyme disease].

In the majority of cases, meningoradiculitis consecutive to tick bite most probably belongs to Lyme disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. The disease may be limited to the primary, though inconstant, stage of cutaneous migratory erythema, or it may develop into cardiac and, mostly, neurological disorders. The nervous system involvement, which we observed in 7 patients, mainly consists of peripheral motor neuropathy of moderate severity and sometimes limited to the cranial nerves, associated with very severe radicular pain regularly heralding radicular deficit. Lyme disease predominates in a

Tick bite: two cases studied by scanning electron microscopy.

The attachment of ticks to human skin has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. Intact specimens of Ixodes ovatus and Ixodes persulcatus were examined, and we also studied the skin of two patients who had been bitten by these two species. In the first case, the remains of the tick were visible and a homogeneous cement-like substance was observed on the dorsal hypostome and in the dermis, suggesting that the tick attaches itself to the host skin by a secretion. In the second case, the apices of some denticles of the hypostome were chipped. Two months later, the skin which the tick had a

Spatial tick bite exposure and associated risk factors in Scandinavia.

Tick-borne diseases are emerging and re-emerging threats causing public health concerns in Europe and North America. Prevention and control requires understanding of human exposure and behaviour. The aim was to measure exposure to tick bites across Scandinavia, its spatial distribution and the associated risk factors. Methods We sent a web-based survey to a randomly chosen population and analysed answers by Principal Component Analysis and Chi-Square. Individual responses were aggregated at the municipality level to assess the spatial distribution of bites. Results Nearly 60% of adults reporte…

Scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy after tick bite in Argentina.

Scalp eschar and neck lymphadenopathy after a tick bite (SENLAT) is an emerging non-pathogen-specific syndrome characterized by scalp eschar and occipital and/or cervical lymph node enlargement following a tick bite. We report a case of SENLAT syndrome in an Argentinian patient after exposure to ticks during outdoor work in the Paraná River Delta region.

[South African tick bite fever in a group of Russian tourists].

The paper describes a clinical case of South African tick bite fever in a group of Russian tourists. The group of 5 people who had been ill with this disease after a tourist trip to the South African Republic (the Kruger National Park in the north-eastern province of Mpumalanga) were followed up. During their trip, all of them were bitten by different insects many times. The disease exhibited different clinical presentations; however, all the patients were noted to have a fever with slight intoxication and a maculopapular rash at different sites of the body; 3 had lymphadenopathy and one had a
