The importance of study duration and spatial scale in pathogen detection-evidence from a tick-infested island.

Ticks (Acari: Ixodoidea) are among the most common vectors of zoonotic pathogens worldwide. While research on tick-borne pathogens is abundant, few studies have thoroughly investigated small-scale spatial differences in their occurrence. Here, we used long-term cloth-dragging data of Ixodes ricinus and its associated, known and putative pathogens (Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., Borrelia miyamotoi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Bartonella spp., Babesia spp., and tick-borne encephalitis virus, TBEV) from a small, well-studied island in southwestern F

Functional analysis of the Borrelia burgdorferi bba64 gene product in murine infection via tick infestation.

Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis, is transmitted to humans from the bite of Ixodes spp. ticks. During the borrelial tick-to-mammal life cycle, B. burgdorferi must adapt to many environmental changes by regulating several genes, including bba64. Our laboratory recently demonstrated that the bba64 gene product is necessary for mouse infectivity when B. burgdorferi is transmitted by an infected tick bite, but not via needle inoculation. In this study we investigated the phenotypic properties of a bba64 mutant strain, including 1) replication during tick engorgement, 2

Effect of controlling natural field-tick infestation on the growth of N'Dama and Gobra zebu cattle in the Gambia.

The effect of tick infestations on liveweight gain (LWG) was assessed by comparison of weight changes in flumethrin-treated N'Dama and Gobra zebu cattle (16-20 months old) with respective control groups submitted to natural tick challenge over 1 year. Flumethrin was applied monthly, fortnightly or weekly. Preventive treatments against anaplasmosis, babesiosis and trypanosomosis were given. Mortality rate was recorded and post-mortem examinations carried out. In both treated and control animals, significantly fewer Hyalomma spp. and Amblyomma variegatum were found on N'Dama than on Gobra zebu c…

Survey of tick-borne diseases in dogs infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus at a kennel in Okayama Prefecture, Japan.

Serological tests were performed to investigate extent of tick-borne diseases in dogs infested with Rhipicephalus sanguineus at a kennel in Okayama Prefecture. Three of 22 dogs (13.6%) were positive for Ehrlichia canis. Two of 19 dogs (10.5%) were positive for Rickettsia japonica. Three of 22 dogs (13.6%) were positive for Babesia gibsoni. None of these animals were positive for Coxiella burnetii or Hepatozoon canis. A microfilaria was detected in a drop smear of hemolymph from an engorged female tick, however, species was not determined. It is possible that these ticks can transmit pathogens

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting wild birds (Aves) and white-footed mice in Lyme, CT.

Birds were captured and recaptured (20.8% of 5,297) with Japanese mist nets, and white-footed mice, Peromyscus leucopus (Rafinesque), were caught and recaught (69.1% of 355) with Sherman box traps during the late spring, summer, and early fall from July 1989 through October 1991 to study tick-host relationships in Lyme, CT. Ixodes scapularis Say, a vector of Lyme disease spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto Johnson, Schmid, Hye, Steigerwalt & Brenner, infested 803 birds (15.2%) in 36 species and 148 (40.3%) of the mice. This tick dominated both birds (94.4% of 4,065 ticks) and mice

Tick-crocodilian interactions: a review, with the first record of tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infestation in the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), and a concise host-parasite index.

Interactions between ticks and crocodilians (crocodiles, alligators, caiman, and gharials) are poorly studied but may have significant bearing on the ecology and health of these reptiles. The first record of tick infestation of the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is reported along with the first case of infestation by Amblyomma cordiferum on Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus). A review is also provided of tick-crocodilian interactions with a concise host-parasite index.

Prevalence of Ixodid Tick Infestation Among Small Ruminants in Ethiopia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tick infestation and tick-borne diseases remain a major threat to small ruminant production in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Ethiopia, favourable ecological and climatic conditions promote the survival of ixodid ticks, yet no systematic evidence has summarized their overall prevalence in sheep and goats. METHODS: Following the PRISMA 2020 guideline, a systematic search was conducted in databases (ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Wiley Online Library and African Journals Online) and other sources (Google Scholar and Google Engine). Studies published between January 2012 and

Tick infestation and molecular detection of causative agents of anaplasmosis in small ruminants from eastern Tanzania.

Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are tick-borne pathogens that cause significant economic loss in small ruminants. Despite having larger population of small ruminants, Tanzania has limited information about the presence and distribution of these bacteria and their vectors. This study investigated ticks’ prevalence, control methods, and infection rates of A. ovis and A. phagocytophilum in small ruminants from Eastern Tanzania. Out of 223 animals sampled, 87.6% were infested by ticks, and the prevalence did not vary significantly among sheep (86.9%, n = 53) and goats (90.1%, n = 146)

Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii in Amblyomma gervaisi ticks infesting monitor lizards (Varanus bengalensis).

Reptiles often inhabit environments that are in close proximity to humans and livestock, creating opportunities for parasite transmission. They are common in areas where they find shelter, food and warmth. The Bengal monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis), a member of the family Varanidae, represents one of the largest groups of extant poikilothermic predators. Monitor lizards are known to harbor several tick species that serve as vectors for a variety of pathogens. No prior information is available in the literature regarding ticks infesting V. bengalensis in Pakistan as well as regarding the o

Evaluation of fluralaner as an oral acaricide to reduce tick infestation in a wild rodent reservoir of Lyme disease.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is an increasing public health threat in temperate zones of the northern hemisphere, yet relatively few methods exist for reducing LD risk in endemic areas. Disrupting the LD transmission cycle in nature is a promising avenue for risk reduction. This experimental study evaluated the efficacy of fluralaner, a recent oral acaricide with a long duration of effect in dogs, for killing Ixodes scapularis ticks in Peromyscus maniculatus mice, a known wildlife reservoir for Borrelia burgdorferi in nature. METHODS: We assigned 87 mice to 3 fluralaner treatment groups (50

New records of ticks infesting bats in Brazil, with observations on the first nymphal stage of Ornithodoros hasei.

In Brazil, at least 14 species of soft ticks (Argasidae) are associated with bats. While Ornithodoros hasei seems to be abundant among foliage-roosting bats, other groups of ticks are found exclusively inside caves. In this paper, noteworthy records of soft ticks infesting bats are documented in new localities from Bahia, Pernambuco, Piauí, and Rondônia states. Out of 201 bats examined, 25 were infested by 152 ticks belonging to seven taxa: Ornithodoros cavernicolous, O. hasei, Ornithodoros marinkellei, Ornithodoros cf. fonsecai, Ornithodoros cf. clarki, Antricola sp., and Nothoaspis amazonien

Does Rhipicephalus microplus tick infestation increase the risk for myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax in cattle?

The larval phase of Cochliomyia hominivorax (screwworm) is an obligate parasite of vertebrate animals, particularly mammals, and widespread in South America, where it remains one of the most important parasitic diseases of domestic animals. The skin of cattle highly infested by ticks, with cutaneous lesions, exudation of tissue fluid and blood scent seems to produce the ideal environment for fly attraction. However, an association between these parasites was never investigated. The aim of this work was to verify if there is an association between Rhipicephalus microplus tick load and the occur

Increased mortality of black-browed albatross chicks at a colony heavily-infested with the tick Ixodes uriae.

At Bird Island, South Georgia, we studied the effects of the tick Ixodes uriae on survival of chicks at two colonies of the black-browed albatross Diomedea melanophrys, one where most chicks were infested with ticks, the other where most chicks were tick-free. When the two colonies were compared, it was found that the colony heavily-infested with ticks had significantly greater chick mortality than the colony lightly-infested with ticks. However, within each of the two colonies, there was no significant difference in survival between chicks with ticks and those without ticks.
