Immunosuppression following organ transplantation is a known risk factor for the development of lymphoproliferative disorders. Mycosis fungoides, a rare entity in pediatric patients, has seldom been reported as a post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder. We report a case of folliculotropic mycosis fungoides in a pediatric patient following liver transplantation that was initially diagnosed as tinea capitis.

Tinea capitis is the most common superficial mycosis in children of school age. Although it is of public health importance, it is not a reportable or notifiable disease; therefore, actual prevalence figures are unknown in many endemic areas. The aim of this work was to determine the prevalence of tinea capitis among primary school children in two states in central Nigeria, highlighting the main aetiological agents of the infection and possible predisposing factors. A total of 28 505 primary school children aged between 3 and 16 years were recruited for the study, from 12 primary schools in two…

Tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton rubrum is a rare event worldwide. We report on an elderly otherwise healthy man with inflammatory fungal disease of the scalp caused by this pathogen. He had no signs of concomitant mycosis of the skin and nails and no underlying immunosuppressive disease. The fungal infection primarily had been misdiagnosed in terms of a pyoderma. Failure of antibiotic treatment, a positive mycological study and molecular diagnostics eventually led to the correct diagnosis. After systemic and local administration of terbinafine the lesion improved totally.

A 34-year-old female patient presented with hair loss due to black dot tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton tonsurans for 6 months. Hair loss progressed to painful swelling for 2 months due to kerion Celsi which may be associated with treatment like topical minoxidil, antibiotic and corticosteroid previously. The patient was treated with oral Itraconazole initially without success but cured by Terbinafine eventually. It's very interesting that the patient caught kerion celsi secondary to a four-month history of hair loss due to black dot tinea capitis.

Sixty novice Buddhist monks with tinea capitis confirmed according to clinical presentation and mycological laboratory finding were included in this study. Mixed-type clinical presentation was observed in approximately half of all cases, together with scarring alopecia (95%) and superficial fungal skin infection at locations other than the scalp (43.3%). The major isolated organism was Trichophyton violaceum, and mixed-organism infection was found in 27 cases (45%). Slow-onset presentation and an extensive area of infection were significantly associated with mixed-type clinical presentation.

BACKGROUND: The thyroid gland is known to be sensitive to the carcinogenic effect of ionizing radiation, especially in children. The role of potential modifiers of the risk and latency period effects needs further investigation. We examined the effect of low doses of ionizing radiation (4.5-49.5 cGy) on the risk of developing thyroid cancer after long latent periods of up to 54 yr after childhood exposure.
METHODS: The study population included 10,834 individuals irradiated against tinea capitis in the 1950s and two matched nonirradiated groups (general population and siblings) for comparison…

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis (TC) is the most frequent dermatophyte infection in children requiring systemic and topical treatment for several weeks. Traditionally, diagnosis and treatment monitoring were based on microscopic examination and fungal culture of scales and plucked hairs, which both have significant limitations.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of dermatophyte polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the treatment of TC.
METHODS: Scales and plucked hairs of children with TC were investigated by dermatophyte PCR, microscopic examination and fungal culture at baseline and during antifun…

Tinea capitis is a common fungal infection in children, but it is rare in newborns. We report a case of a 3-week-old infant presenting with scalp annular erythema. She had a history of wearing a woolen hat one week before the disease onset. Wood's lamp and dermoscopic findings favoured the diagnosis of tinea capitis. Further examinations of her scalp, including direct KOH examination and fungal culture confirmed the diagnosis of tinea capitis caused by treatment with oral griseofulvin was effective. Neonatal tinea capitis is often misdiagnosed due to its rarity and atypical presentation. A tho…

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a common cutaneous infection of the scalp and hair follicles, typically diagnosed by direct examination and culture. Treatment with oral antifungals is usually withheld until mycology results are available. In Israel, African refugee children demonstrate higher susceptibility to Tinea capitis and generally fail to undergo follow-up evaluations.
METHODS: This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristics and treatment responses of refugee children in Israel with Tinea capitis, in order to formulate a treatment plan for primary care physicians. To this end, d…

Tinea capitis gladiatorum and tinea corporis gladiatorum caused by the anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton tonsurans are well-known clinical entities in individuals involved in combat sports, e.g., wrestlers and judo practitioners. We present an outbreak of Trichophyton tonsurans tinea capitis gladiatorum among wrestlers at a boarding school in Adana, Turkey. Fourteen of the 29 wrestlers examined (48.3%) harbored the pathogen, including eight asymptomatic scalp carriers, five with tinea capitis superficialis, and one asymptomatic trunk carrier. Dermatophytes were isolated from samples of …

Tinea capitis is a common fungal infection of the skin and hair follicles of the scalp, primarily affecting the pediatric population. It is caused by dermatophytes, mainly from the Trichophyton and Microsporum genera, and clinical diagnosis can be confirmed through microscopic examination, culture, or molecular techniques. Adequate treatment should involve systemic antifungal drugs. Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa, also reports the second-highest prevalence of tinea capitis on the continent. However, fungal diseases remain largely neglected in public health initiatives. Th…
