OBJECTIVE: To compare postoperative pain associated with palatal and tuberosity donor sites for soft tissue grafting, and to evaluate the outcomes in both the donor and recipient sites.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Twenty healthy nonsmokers requiring bilateral soft tissue grafts were recruited for the study. For the 10 patients who required free gingival graft (FGG), 10 epithelialized grafts were taken from the tuberosity and 10 from the palate. The other 10 patients who required coronally advanced flap (CAF) and connective tissue graft (CTG) received 10 de-epithelialized grafts from the tuberosity

The success of corneal transplantation highly depends on the quality of the used graft. Various factors play a crucial role such as a perfect stroma without optically relevant, centrally located cloudiness or changes (e. g. scars) or an adherent Descemet membrane. One of the most important parameters is the quality of the endothelial cell layer with a sufficiently large endothelial cell count. An open question is so far whether the donor age affects corneal quality and therefore has an impact on the success of transplantation. A comprehensive review of the available literature revealed that a

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence of positive microbiology results (culture and/or Gram stain) in donor cornea tissue with newer transplant methods and to assess if the results subsequently correlate with higher incidence of clinical infection.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the microbiology records of 569 consecutive corneal transplants from July 2006 through July 2010 was performed to evaluate positive microbiology results in routine evaluation of cornea donor tissue.
RESULTS: Microbiologic results were available for 544 of 569 transplants. The remaining 25 cases did not have specime

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility of pneumatic dissection of donor endothelium and the effect of 7 days of storage in tissue culture medium on the endothelial cell count.
DESIGN: Experimental study.
PARTICIPANTS: We used 20 human donor corneoscleral tissues deemed unsuitable for transplantation.
INTERVENTION: Donor corneas were mounted on an artificial anterior chamber and the anterior stroma removed with a 300-micron microkeratome head. Air was injected into the residual donor tissue with a 30-G needle from the endothelial side to detach Descemet's membrane. The "bubble" was expanded

BACKGROUND: Binding of chemokines to glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) is classically described as initiating inflammatory cell migration and creating tissue chemokine gradients that direct local leukocyte chemotaxis into damaged or transplanted tissues. While chemokine-receptor binding has been extensively studied during allograft transplantation, effects of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) interactions with chemokines on transplant longevity are less well known. Here we examine the impact of interrupting chemokine-GAG interactions and chemokine-receptor interactions, both locally and systemically, on vascula

An histopathologic screening method for prostate cancer assessment in organ donors is crucial because of the widening of the donor pool to older individuals. Evaluation of cancer grading with multiple biopsies is fundamental in the cases of abnormal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values and suspect ultrasound findings. However, multiple biopsies may fail to represent the whole neoplasia, and grading may be difficult particularly because there may not be information about capsular penetration. Since October 2007, 20 prostate autopsy specimens were submitted to an histopathologic screening meth

PURPOSE: To report the clinical results of posterior lamellar keratoplasty (PLK) using predissected organ-cultured donor corneal tissue implanted after stripping of the Descemet membrane.
METHODS: Twenty-two eyes of 22 patients in whom a PLK procedure was performed for pseudophakic bullous keratopathy and/or Fuchs endothelial dystrophy were evaluated. In all eyes, the recipient Descemet membrane was excised by performing a descemetorhexis. Just after harvesting the donor tissue, each cornea had a posterior lamellar dissection made at approximately 80% stromal depth, and each cornea was preser

In vitro viability of the endothelium of corneas stored in organ-culture medium is longer than in other storage techniques. This article reports on the clinical results of 20 penetrating keratoplasties performed using corneas stored for > 4 weeks in organ culture. Seventeen of the procedures were elective and three were emergencies. Mean preservation time was 35.6 +/- 7 days (mean +/- SD) and mean follow-up was 16.2 months. During preservation, an endothelial cell loss of 10% was noted. Seventeen grafts remained transparent, and three failed between 3 and 24 months postoperatively. Mean endoth

In the period 1979-83 a total of 232 penetrating corneal transplantations were performed with organ culture preserved donor material. Forty-two operations were made à chaud for central corneal ulcerations. The results of these interventions are reported and discussed. The surgery presented no serious problems and on first post-operative day the anterior chamber was reformed in all cases, and pain was relieved. Patients were confined to bed only for 1 day. Graft deswelling was slightly retarded compared to planned surgery, but all functioning grafts obtained normal thickness. The overall graft

This systematic review analyzes postoperative complications at the palatal donor site following the harvesting of autologous soft tissue grafts in periodontal surgery. Although these grafts remain the clinical reference standard due to their effectiveness, their harvesting may be associated with donor-site morbidity, including pain, bleeding, partial necrosis, and sensory disturbances. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, identifying 16 clinical studies published between 2019 and April 2025. The included studies comprised randomized controlled trials, pro

Harvesting autologous soft tissue from the hard palate is a standard procedure, but managing the donor site wound is critical for patient comfort and reducing complications. Traditional methods like palatal stents are often costly and uncomfortable. While commercially available mucoadhesive bandages offer a barrier, their adhesion alone is temporary and unreliable, often failing prematurely due to oral movements. A novel "palatal shield" technique using composite resin stabilized on adjacent teeth's palatal surface has been proposed to address postoperative discomfort, yet it still has limitat

BACKGROUND: Machine perfusion is the preferred preservation method for deceased donor kidneys. Perfusate fluid, which contains a complex mixture of components, offers potential insight into the organ's viability and function. This study explored immune cell release, particularly tissue-resident lymphocytes (TRLs), during donor kidney machine perfusion and its correlation with injury markers.
METHODS: Perfusate samples from hypothermic machine perfusion (HMP; n = 26) and normothermic machine perfusion (NMP; n = 16) of human donor kidneys were analyzed for TRLs using flow cytometry. Residency w

Oxidative stress induced by well-known toxins including ferric nitrilotriacetate (Fe-NTA), carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and thioacetamide (TAA) has been attributed to causing tissue injury in the liver and kidney. In this study, the effect of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), a donor of nitric oxide and NG-nitroarginine methyl ester (l-NAME), a nitric oxide inhibitor on TAA-induced hepatic oxidative stress, GSH and GSH-dependent enzymes, serum transaminases and tumor promotion markers such as ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and [3H]-thymidine incorporation in rats were examined. The animals wer

The European Association of Tissue Banks (EATB) donor case workshop is a forum held within the program of the EATB annual congress. The workshop offers an opportunity to discuss and evaluate possible approaches taken to challenging situations regarding donor selection. Donor case workshops actively engage participants with diverging background and experience in an informal, secure and enjoyable setting. The resulting discussion with peers promotes consensus development in deciding tissue donor acceptability, especially when donor health issues are not conclusively addressed in standards and re

Femoral head donation at the time of hip replacement surgery provides a much needed resource of bone allograft to orthopaedic surgeons. Prior to 2005, potential femoral head donors were identified and consented in the hospital setting on the day of surgery. This resulted in over 40 % of donations failing post operatively suggesting that more effort could be given to pre-operative screening resulting in substantial savings in the cost associated with collection and testing of donors who were subsequently failed. The Donor Liaison role was implemented in 2005 to coordinate a Femoral Head Donatio

We identified West Nile virus (WNV) RNA in skin, fat, muscle, tendon, and bone marrow from a deceased donor associated with WNV transmission through solid organ transplantation. WNV could not be cultured from the RNA-positive tissues. Further studies are needed to determine if WNV can be transmitted from postmortem tissues.
