Several amniote lineages independently evolved multiple rows of marginal teeth in response to the challenge of processing high fiber plant matter. Multiple tooth rows develop via alterations to tooth replacement in captorhinid reptiles and ornithischian dinosaurs, but the specific changes that produce this morphology differ, reflecting differences in their modes of tooth attachment. To further understand the mechanisms by which multiple tooth rows can develop, we examined this feature in Endothiodon bathystoma, a member of the only synapsid clade (Anomodontia) to evolve a multi-rowed marginal

Eroded enamel is more susceptible to abrasion than healthy one. The present study aims to determine the impact of toothpaste abrasiveness (REA-value) and brushing force on enamel wear after erosion. 140 enamel samples from bovine teeth were divided into seven groups (N = 20). Each group was assigned a different toothpaste with varying levels of abrasiveness (groups 1+2: Candida Parodin (REA 2), groups 3+4: Candida Multicare (REA 9), and groups 5+6: Candida White Micro Crystals (REA 19)). The samples were first exposed to a citric acid solution (pH 2.60; 2 min) to simulate an erosive attack and

Tooth erosion is becoming an increasingly common dental problem among teenagers. The study aimed to determine risk factors for erosive lesions in young sports professionals. Participants were 155 students-102 physically active and 53 controls. The method included dental examination (including Basic Erosive Wear Examination) and a questionnaire concerning sports activity, dietary and hygienic habits. The sporting activity significantly correlated with erosive lesions (RSpearman = 0.344). The regression model incorporating the kind of sports activity, special diet and (non-)drinking water was st

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effectiveness of highly concentrated fluoride products and remineralizing products (F-APC) in preventing erosive dental lesions in competitive swimming patients. A total of 48 teeth were extracted, preserved in saline solution and divided into three groups. In G1 (control group), each tooth was half-immersed in chlorinated pool water; in G2 (fluoride-treated group), after being totally immersed in chlorinated water, each tooth had half of its surface treated with a highly concentrated fluoride product once a week; in G3 (remineralization produ

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear encompasses the loss of dental hard tissues through processes including attrition, abrasion and erosion. Previous studies have identified potential associations with age, sex, salivary characteristics, socioeconomic factors and bruxism; however, findings remain inconsistent and often based on single-factor analyses. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with tooth wear, with emphasis on subject‑based bruxism, and to evaluate the relative contribution of bruxism in relation to demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, and functional factors using a multivariate a

pH value, calcium, and phosphate and to a lesser extent fluoride content of a drink or foodstuff are important factors explaining erosive attack. They determine the degree of saturation with respect to tooth minerals, which is the driving force for dissolution. Solutions oversaturated with respect to dental hard tissue will not dissolve it. Addition of calcium (and phosphate) salts to erosive drinks showed protection of surface softening. Today, several Ca-enriched soft drinks are on the market or products with naturally high content in Ca and P are available (such as yoghurt), which do not so

Sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) as toothpaste additive is claimed to reduce erosive tooth wear and to stabilize stannous ions. However, little is known about the impact of concentration and its interactions with fluoride (F) or stannous+fluoride ions (F/Sn) on enamel erosion and erosion-abrasion. In a 10 day cyclic in vitro erosion-abrasion model, 320 flat human enamel specimens were divided into ten groups (n = 32 each) and daily subjected to six erosive challenges (0.5% citric acid, 2 min) and two toothpaste suspension applications (2 min, 1:3 F-free toothpaste:mineral-salt solution, 0.23% so

Linear enamel hypoplasia is a developmental disturbance of enamel resulting in clinically visible horizontal defects in enamel that are present on eruption of the tooth. Nondevelopmental lesions of the hard tissues of the tooth, including carious, abrasion, erosion, attrition, and abfraction lesions, require varying amounts of time after tooth eruption to develop. Because linear enamel hypoplasia lesions are present on eruption and are exposed to the factors responsible for abrasion, erosion, and abfraction, nondevelopmental lesions could occur within them in any combination. This report descr

AIM: The aim of this report is to describe the relationship of some salivary parameters to dental erosion resulting from excessive citric acid consumption and present a description of a prosthetic approach used to restore the damaged dentition of a patient with severe erosion.
BACKGROUND: The high consumption of dietary sources of acids can lead to erosion or the excessive wear of dental hard tissues. Erosion may be modified by salivary parameters such as flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations and composite resin veneers can be used successfully to

Dental erosion is increasingly recognized as a common condition in paediatric dentistry with complications of tooth sensitivity, altered aesthetics and loss of occlusal vertical dimension. The prevalence of erosion in children has been reported to range from 10% to over 80%. The primary dentition is thought to be more susceptible to erosion compared to the permanent dentition due to the thinner and less mineralized enamel. The aim of this paper was to critically review dental erosion in children with regards to its prevalence, aetiology, diagnosis and prevention. The associations between erosi

An overview of tooth wear, i.e. of non-carious destructive processes affecting the teeth including abrasion, demastication, attrition, abfraction, resorption and erosion is presented. The nomenclature and classification of dental erosion commonly used in the dental literature are summarized. They are based on etiology (extrinsic, intrinsic, idiopathic), on clinical severity (Classes I to III), on pathogenetic activity (manifest, latent) or on localization (perimolysis). Interactions between erosion and abrasion, demastication, attrition, and abfraction as well as caries and low salivary flow r

BACKGROUND: The cervical non-carious wedged-shaped lesion is controversial in that its aetiology may involve attrition, erosion, abrasion and stress-corrosion (abfraction). This study examined the histopathology of anterior teeth with cervical wedge-shaped lesions by light and electron microscopy to elucidate their pathogenesis.
METHODS: Ten undecalcified human teeth with cervical lesions were available for investigation. Patency of the dentine tubules was tested using red dye penetration from the pulp chamber. The morphology of normal and sclerotic dentine adjacent to the cervical wedge-shap
