The maxillary canine is commonly displaced or impacted. Monitoring the normal development of the dentition is important to identify and treat potential problems and hence minimise the need for later, more complex therapy. This paper discusses some problems that may occur and the subsequent treatment of these problems, by illustration with five case reports.

In the later stage of exfoliation in human deciduous teeth, odontoclastic resorption takes place at the pulpal surface of the coronal dentin. However, this resorption does not continue until the teeth are shed, and the resorbed pulp chamber wall is usually repaired by cementum-like tissue deposition. In this study, we examined the formation and characteristics of the cementum-like hard tissue on the resorbed dentin surface in the pulp chamber of deciduous teeth prior to shedding. The site and degree of deposition of newly formed cementum-like tissue on the resorbed pulp chamber wall varied fro

The dates of natural exfoliation of primary teeth and of clinical eruption of their successors were recorded in 141 children, a total of 660 teeth. The aim of this investigation was to study the length of the period between these two developmental events. In the mandible, the mean length of the toothless period for the central incisor was 2 weeks and that for the lateral incisors and canines 6 weeks. In the maxilla, the corresponding period was 6 weeks for the central incisor and over 4 months for the lateral incisor and the canine. The mean length of the toothless period was shortest, 0-6 day

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to longitudinally evaluate follow-up treatment on primary teeth initially treated with silver diammine fluoride (SDF). Methods: This retrospective cohort evaluated private insurance (not Medicaid) claims data from 2018 to 2019 for children no older than 12 years with at least one primary tooth initially treated with SDF. Additional treatment per tooth was recorded over a follow-up of at least 24 months. Results: The mean and standard deviation (±SD) age of 46,884 patients was 5.7±2.3 and for SDF-treated teeth per patient was 2.6±2.1. Forty percent (95 per

Root resorption is a physiologic event for the primary teeth. It is still unclear whether odontoclasts, the cells which resorb the dental hard tissue, are different from the osteoclasts, the cells that resorb bone. Root resorption seems to be initiated and regulated by the stellate reticulum and the dental follicle of the underlying permanent tooth via the secretion of stimulatory molecules, i.e. cytokines and transcription factors. The primary root resorption process is regulated in a manner similar to bone remodeling, involving the same receptor ligand system known as RANK/RANKL (receptor ac

AIM: This case study seeks to shed light on a creatively built, highly functional space regainer that demonstrated exceptional patient compliance.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Space loss, tooth size and arch length discrepancies, early primary tooth exfoliation, and premature eruption of permanent teeth are among the obstacles that make the transition from a transitory to a permanent dentition rarely accurate. Space regainers are appliances that help restore and keep space by guiding the erupting tooth into the correct arch position. In addition to maintaining function and arch length, they also elim…

An 8-year-old boy recently sustained a cerebellar arteriovenous malformation rupture, and subsequently suffered from severe neurological injury and became ventilator-dependent through a tracheostomy. During a routine clinic visit, the parents reported that a loose baby tooth had fallen out and disappeared 7 days earlier. The physical examination was unremarkable, but a chest X-ray demonstrated a foreign body in the left lung and secondary atelectasis. A rigid bronchoscopy extracted what turned out to be a tooth from the left lower lobe bronchus, with no associated sequelae. Aspiration of a too

Hypophosphatasia is a hereditary disease characterized by congenital deficiency of tissue alkaline phosphatase. One of its dental features is the shedding of teeth. We have experienced a case which was referred to our clinic with the chief complaints of loss and shedding of lower deciduous central incisors and was diagnosed to be highly suspected of hypophosphatasia as a result of hematological examination at the pediatric clinic. As a result of close systemic and dental examination and further study of changes in the course for two and a half years, the following findings were obtained: 1. Lo

The second dentition is a process determined in space and time which presumes the presence of the permanent dental germ, its optimal position and the soundness of the periapical area. In absence of these conditions the clinically and histologically proved pathological phenomena (ex. the pathological triad of second dentition) can occur.

Root canal treatment for primary teeth is a critical therapy aimed at eliminating infected tissue, relieving pain, and preserving the primary tooth until its natural exfoliation and replacement. The success of this treatment largely depends on the choice of root canal filling materials. In recent years, driven by advances in materials science and biomedicine, research on primary-tooth root canal filling materials has made substantial progress, including optimization of traditional materials such as zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) and calcium hydroxide-iodoform mixtures, as well as the development and

A case of juvenile hypothyroidism is presented showing evidence of delayed shedding of deciduous teeth, root development, eruption of permanent teeth as well as retarded skeletal growth. Changes in dental and skeletal ages were of varying degrees following two years of treatment with L-thyroxine.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency of and describe the clinical characteristics and complications of patients with nonsyndromic multiple mandibular supernumerary premolars.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 110,500 patients seen between July 2003 and January 2007, 32 cases of multiple (2 or more) mandibular supernumerary premolars were found. Data including age, gender, number, distribution, and location of supernumerary premolars, extraction procedure, and related complications (such as cystic changes, root resorption, or adjacent teeth eruption disturbance) were coll

This case describes a young, healthy, white female who demonstrated anterior alveolar bone loss along with premature loss of her primary incisors. The alveolar bone loss remains unexplained. The root surfaces of most of the primary anterior teeth exhibited one or more eroded areas devoid of cementum with some evidence in two teeth of cellular resorptive activity. These findings suggest that premature root resorption was occurring concurrently with unexplained extensive alveolar bone loss. The child will be examined periodically to determine whether this process of bone loss with subsequent too

A pulpectomy is a common treatment to preserve the function of primary teeth with irreversible pulpitis or necrosis and prevent consequences like the mesial drifting of a permanent molar. This report discusses a seven-year-old female with a necrotic mandibular primary second molar (#75) that has a questionable prognosis. Vitapex was used as obturation material during the procedure, and X-rays showed extruded material from the D canal. After nine months, the patient showed no signs or symptoms, and the extruded material had completely resorbed. This case highlights Vitapex's safety and effectiv

In dentistry, over-retained deciduous teeth pose a distinct issue due to their endurance during the expected exfoliation period. This case study describes a clinical situation with a male patient who is seven years old and complaining of painful swelling over the maxillary anterior region of the jaw and clinically showing dark red-colored, firm, non-tender, purulent swelling extending from alveolar mucosa of the upper anterior to the gingival margin of the 51, 52, 53 region. The treatment plan includes the extraction of the primary teeth. This case report also highlights the importance of mini

The oro-dento-facial features and dysfunctions of children with hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type III (HSAN III), known as familial dysautonomia (FD) or Riley-Day syndrome, were first described in the scientific literature in 1949. They include: dental trauma, dental and soft tissue selfmutilation, normal dental age, normal sequence and timing of eruption and exfoliation of teeth, smaller tooth size, different and disproportional tooth components, normal alveolar bone height, small jaws, mild crowding and malocclusion. These individuals have different craniofacial morphology fro
