Tooth length and incisal wear and growth in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) fed diets of different abrasiveness.

Dental diseases are among the most important reasons for presenting guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and other rodents to veterinary clinics, but the aetiopathology of this disease complex is unclear. Clinicians tend to believe that the ever-growing teeth of rabbits and rodents have a constant growth that needs to be worn down by the mastication of an appropriate diet. In this study, we tested the effect of four different pelleted diets of increasing abrasiveness [due to both internal (phytoliths) and external abrasives (sand)] or whole grass hay fed for 2 weeks each in random order to 16 guinea

Rates of anterior tooth wear in Middle Pleistocene hominins from Sima de los Huesos (Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain).

This study presents quantitative data on the rates of anterior tooth wear in a Pleistocene human population. The data were obtained for the hominin sample of the Sima de los Huesos site in Atapuerca, Spain. The fossil record belongs to a minimum of 28 individuals of the same biological population, assigned to the species Homo heidelbergensis. We have estimated the original and the preserved crown height of the mandibular incisors (I1 and I2) of 11 individuals, whose age at death can be ascertained from the mineralization stage and tooth eruption. Results provide a range of 0.276-0.348 and 0.28…

Tooth wear and dental calculus in a group of orca (Orcinus orca) stranded on the New Zealand southern coast.

In 2014, a group of nine orca stranded in Te Waewae Bay, Western Southland, and their remains were collected, processed and studied in partnership with Ōraka Aparima Rūnaka. A total of 436 teeth were analysed to determine the location, type and intensity scores of tooth wear. The presence of dental calculus and percentage surface coverage was assessed on 1744 surfaces. Tooth wear and calculus were investigated in relation to sex and total body length (as a proxy for age). All orca had some degree of tooth wear; however, most teeth were worn superficially. Only two individuals had severe wear a…

Assessing current visual tooth wear age estimation methods for Rangifer tarandus using a known age sample from Canada.

Age estimation is crucial for investigating animal populations in the past and present. Visual examination of tooth wear and eruption is one of the most common ageing methods in zooarchaeology, wildlife management, palaeontology, and veterinary research. Such approaches are particularly advantageous because they are non-destructive, can be completed using photographs, and do not require specialized training. Several tooth wear and eruption methods have been developed for Rangifer tarandus, a widely distributed and long-utilized species in the North. This paper evaluates the practicality and ef…

Tooth Wear Severity and Temporomandibular Joint Degenerative Findings on Cone-Beam Computed Tomography: A Cross-Sectional Study in Adults.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is commonly assumed to be a marker of parafunctional load and, by extension, of mechanical stress on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ); whether greater wear accompanies greater degeneration in the same joint has rarely been tested. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether tooth wear severity is associated with ipsilateral CBCT-detected TMJ degeneration in adults with TMD symptoms. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 80 adults (160 joints; mean age 27 years; 80% female) underwent standardised tooth-wear scoring (Smith and Knight index, 0-4) and blinded CBCT assessment of ost…

Comparing gait performance of people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease who do and do not wear ankle foot orthoses.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) are commonly prescribed for people with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. Scant evidence exists to guide the type and timing of orthotic prescription. This study explores the latter issue by investigating the differences in presentation and gait function of people with CMT disease who wore AFOs for daily mobility (n = 11) and a group who did not (n = 21). The aim was to see if there was a difference in the characteristics in people who regularly wear AFOs. METHODS: Primary measures of gait function were a 10-m timed walk (comfortable and max
