Association between toothbrushing frequency and dental caries and tooth loss in adolescents: a cohort study.

This cohort study assessed the association between toothbrushing frequency and the increment of dental caries and tooth loss in a population-based sample of southern Brazilian adolescents, to investigate whether there is any additional benefit in performing a third daily brushing. At baseline, 1,528 12-year-old schoolchildren attending 42 schools were examined for gingivitis and dental caries, and answered a questionnaire. After a mean period of 2.5 years, 801 schoolchildren were re-examined. Dental caries and tooth loss increment were outcomes of the study. The main predictor variable was too…

Oral hygiene behavior and toothbrushing skills: results of the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6).

OBJECTIVES: Past German Oral Health Studies (DMS) have revealed that toothbrushing patterns - a behavioral index comprising toothbrushing frequency, duration and timing - have steadily improved over the previous decades. What has not yet been investigated, however, are toothbrushing skills, ie, the ability to achieve oral cleanliness by removing all plaque deposits. METHOD AND MATERIALS: All participants of the DMS • 6 from the age groups of 12-year-olds, 35- to 44-year-olds, and 65- to 74-year-olds were asked to brush their teeth to the best of their ability. To do so, they used their own de…

Unusual foreign body in the digestive tract: Endoscopic removal of a toothbrush in a pediatric patient.

Foreign body ingestion in pediatrics is one of the most frequent emergencies. To date, the first reported case of toothbrush ingestion was in 1882. Patients with mental illnesses or eating disorders are the most prone to ingesting unusual objects. While endoscopy is a safe and effective technique for foreign body removal, in some cases, it is not the first option. A 13-year-old patient was admitted to the emergency department with mild abdominal pain and nausea without vomiting after ingesting a toothbrush 3 hours prior to admission. An abdominal X-ray (upright and lateral views) was performed

Raman imaging to identify microplastics released from toothbrushes: algorithms and particle analysis.

Microplastics are small plastic fragments that are of increasing concern due to their potential impacts on the environment and human health. The source of microplastics is not completely clear and might originate in daily lives such as from toothbrushes. When toothbrushes are used to clean teeth, small plastic debris and fragments can be potentially released into mouths directly or environment indirectly. This study aims to examine the release of microplastics from toothbrushes, using Raman imaging to identify and visualise the plastic debris with an increased signal-noise ratio via hyper-spec
