Acute toxicity and anticonvulsant activity of liposomes containing nimodipine on pilocarpine-induced seizures in mice.

Nimodipine has been shown to have an inhibitory action on seizures and brain damage in rodents. However, the pharmaceutical applicability of this drug is limited by its low solubility in gastrointestinal fluids and high first-pass effect in the liver, which leads to low bioavailability. These difficulties can be overcome through the use of liposomes. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the toxicity and anticonvulsant activity of liposomes containing nimodipine (NMD-Lipo) on pilocarpine-induced seizures. NMD-Lipo was prepared using the lipid-film hydration method. Central nervous system

Pyrithiones as antifoulants: environmental fate and loss of toxicity.

The environmental fate and the loss of toxicity of two important antifouling actives, zinc pyrithione (ZnPT) and copper pyrithione (CuPT), were investigated using a bioassay study and an outdoor microcosm study. The bioassay used inhibition of the growth of a marine diatom (Amphora coffeaeformis) to measure the toxicity of ZnPT and CuPT over time in sterile, natural, and sediment-supplemented seawater. In natural seawater and sediment-supplemented seawater in the dark and in sterile seawater exposed to light, growth inhibition was reduced at rates corresponding to the rapid degradation rates f

Quantitative inter-specific chemical activity relationships of pesticides in the aquatic environment.

Inter-species correlations could be a useful tool for predicting toxicity and for establishing sensitivity ratios among species. In this paper, quantitative inter-specific chemical activity relationships (QICAR) for aquatic organisms were developed to verify if such an approach could be utilised for estimating toxicological data when no other information is available. Inter-specific toxicity relationships on fish, Daphnia and algae were performed for pesticides considering a large data set (more than 600 compounds) and grouping the data either on a functional (herbicides, fungicides and insect

Toxicological evaluation of an aqueous suspension from leaves and stems of Petiveria alliacea L. (Phytolaccaceae).

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Petiveria alliacea L. (Phytolaccaceae) is used in folk medicine due to its antispasmodic, diuretic, hypoglycemic, abortive, anti-inflammatory and anticancerogenic properties. Although P. alliacea is considered toxic by people, its toxicity remains a concern since it is strongly dependent on the extraction method and the part of the plant used during tests. Even if some healers prefer to use the aerial parts in a liquefied form or by chewing them, instead of decoctions or infusions, no toxicological studies exist using whole dried stems and leaves. MATERIALS AND

A sea of soap: toxicity of anionic surfactant to Clytia hemisphaerica (Hydrozoa).

The increasing threat of anthropogenic pollution to marine ecosystems underscores the need for robust risk assessment through ecotoxicology. While standard bioassays rely on model organisms chosen for their sensitivity and ease of laboratory use, there is growing interest in ecologically relevant species such as jellyfish, to reflect marine environmental complexity. Among jellyfish, hydrozoans represent valuable models in neuroscience and developmental and evolutionary biology; however, they are still unrepresented in ecotoxicology. Here, we propose the hydrozoan Clytia hemisphaerica as a nove

QSAR analysis of the acute toxicity of avermectins towards Tetrahymena pyriformis.

Avermectins have been effectively used in medicine, veterinary medicine, and agriculture as antiparasitic agents for many years. However, there are still no reliable data on the main ecotoxicological characteristics of most individual avermectins. Although many QSAR models have been proposed to describe the acute toxicity of organic compounds towards Tetrahymena pyriformis (T. pyriformis), avermectins are outside the applicability domain of these models. The influence of the molecular structures of various organic compounds on the acute toxicity towards T. pyriformis was studied using the OCHE
