The author reports an anatomoclinical observation of eosinophilic granulomatous hepatitis due to toxocariasis. The problems of the histologic differential diagnosis are discussed. Human cases of parasitic infestation by Toxacara canis--larva migrans syndrome--are quite uncommon (1, 2). In the acute stage the hepatic lesion most often consists in eosinophilic granulomatous hepatitis. The chance finding of an eosinophilic granuloma in a puncture biopsy of the liver may rise problems as concerns the histological differential diagnosis, especially when there is no clinical evidence of a parasitosi…

BACKGROUND: Although toxocariasis is ubiquitous, its prevalence varies around the world, and even within the same region. In Reunion Island, its seroprevalence was 93% in the late eighties. This study aimed to update these data and to describe the characteristics of patients who underwent Toxocara canis serology in Reunion Island University Hospital.
METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated all patients who underwent T. canis serology in Reunion Island University Hospital in 2021. The seroprevalence was calculated and the characteristics of patients were compared between cases and controls…

Wells' syndrome is a rare inflammatory skin disease characterized by pruritic erythematous lesions and cutaneous edema, often accompanied by eosinophilia. Parasitic infestations, such as toxocariasis and strongyloidiasis, can serve as triggers. However, Wells' syndrome associated with toxocariasis and strongyloidiasis has not been reported previously in Indonesia. Herein, we present a case of a 27-year-old male with a chief complaint of recurrent, pruritic, and painful erythematous rash on the right lower leg for 6 months, accompanied by fever and diarrhea. Physical examination showed cutaneou…

We present the case of an 8-year-old girl with an atypical presentation of toxocariasis, from the Peruvian Amazon. A month ago, the clinical presentation was characterized by the presence of abdominal pain, paleness and geophagia, associated with an abdominal mass and generalized lymphadenopathy. There were no respiratory, dermal, ocular or neurological symptoms. Marked peripheral eosinophilia was found in the blood count, and moderate eosinophilia in the spinal cord aspírate. The diagnosis was confirmed by serology with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which showed the presence …

PURPOSE: To investigate ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) characteristics of patients with ocular toxocariasis (OT) and to explore the role of UBM in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of OT.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: 78 eyes of 77 patients clinically consistent with OT and confirmed by serum and/or intraocular antibodies in a single tertiary centre (Fudan University Eye and ENT Hospital, Shanghai) between July 2009 and July 2016 were included in the study. UBM was performed, and the outcomes were analysed.
RESULTS: Mean age of the patients included was 12.8±10.3 years. Pos…

Toxocariasis is a parasitic disease caused by Toxocara canis or T. cati. We report a patient with toxocariasis who presented with dyspnea, high-grade eosinophilia, and bilateral pulmonary nodules. To further characterize the pulmonary manifestations of toxocariasis, we have reviewed 11 previously published pulmonary toxocariasis cases. The most common pulmonary symptoms in our review were cough and dyspnea, and the most common finding on chest imaging was bilateral pulmonary nodules. Risk factors for Toxocara infection primarily included exposure to dogs. Most patients received albendazole and…

A 36-year-old man who often ate raw chicken meat had abnormal chest radiograph findings on a health check-up in July 2009, and visited our department. A chest computed tomographic scan revealed 6 nodular shadows in both lungs, and a hematologic examination revealed eosinophilia and elevation of IgE. Because of his history of eating raw chicken meat, antiparasite antibody testing was performed which revealed antibodies to Toxocara canis, leading to the diagnosis of pulmonary toxocariasis due to Toxocara canis. Although treatment with albendazole was performed, it was discontinued because of hep…

We encountered 8 adult cases of pulmonary toxocariasis. Five were asymptomatic, 1 had transient chest pain, 1 suffered from arthralgia and migrating skin pain, and 1 had chest discomfort due to pneumothorax. Infection was associated with the consumption of raw liver with paratenic hosts in 5 patients. The cause was suspected to be contact with infected young dogs in 1 case and was undetermined in 2 cases. All 8 cases showed some abnormalities in their laboratory examination results including eosinophilia (>500/microl) and elevated IgE (>100 IU), and all had positive results in serological exam…

OBJECTIVE: The variety of toxocariasis clinic manifestations and its relationship with asthma motivated this study. The aim was to study T.canis seropositivity at a public pediatric service and its association with laboratory, epidemiological and clinical factors.
METHODS: This study was cross-sectional and controlled. Two hundred and eight children, from 1 to 14 years old and treated at the University of Santo Amaro Pediatric Department s Immunology and Pneumology clinic between January 2000 and January 2001, underwent serology testing. Antibodies were detected by ELISA testing for the larva…

We report two cases of visceral larva migrans (VLM) syndrome by Toxocara in children. The biological presentation was unusual and characterized by persistent secondary thrombocytosis (>1,000 x 10(9)/L) mimicking an essential thrombocythemia and variable hypereosinophilia syndrome. Both children had non-specific symptoms including abdominal pain, skin rash, and fever. The diagnosis was confirmed by serology. The children were treated with either thiabendazole or albendazole, resulting in normalization of eosinophil and platelet counts.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and laboratory findings in children with toxocariasis.
METHODS: Fifty-four children with reactive serology to Toxocara determined by ELISA were prospectively identified between January 1998 and September 2000. The patients were divided into three groups: asymptomatic children (n 24), those with visceral larva migrans (n 16) and those with ocular larva migrans (n 14). Age, serology titers, and eosinophil count at diagnosis were compared among the groups. The patients received treatment with albendazole 10-15 mg/kg/day for 15 days or thiabendazole 25 mg/kg/da…

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis owing to lodgement of the larvae of Toxocara canis in different organs can result in serious clinical syndromes such as visceral larva migrans or ocular larva migrans. Detection of an antibody response to Toxocara canis excretory-secretory (TES) antigen in serum samples is sensitive and specific for diagnosis and epidemiological surveys. To assess the extent of this problem in northern India, we tested the antibody response to the TES antigen by ELISA technique in subjects residing in a rural area near Chandigarh and in patients attending Nehru hospital, Chandiga…

PURPOSE: To study the results of modern vitrectomy in traction and combined traction-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment involving the macula in cases of ocular toxocariasis.
METHODS: This was a cohort study of patients seen in different institutions in the United States. Ten eyes of 10 patients were studied. Vitrectomy was performed in all eyes, combined with membrane removal, scleral buckle, fluid-gas exchange, silicone oil, or lensectomy in certain cases. The anatomic and visual results of surgery were reviewed.
RESULTS: Ten eyes from 10 patients ranging in age from 2 to 33 years (median, 6…
