Long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and non-accidental mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The health effects of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) continue to be of important public health interest across the globe. Following its 2010 review, the Health Effects Institute appointed a new expert Panel to systematically evaluate the epidemiological evidence regarding the associations between long-term exposure to TRAP and selected health outcomes. This paper describes the main findings of the systematic review on non-accidental mortality. METHODS: The Panel used a systematic approach to conduct the review. An extensive search was conducted of literature published betwee

Long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and selected health outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The health effects of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) continue to be of important public health interest. Following its well-cited 2010 critical review, the Health Effects Institute (HEI) appointed a new expert Panel to systematically evaluate the epidemiological evidence regarding the associations between long-term exposure to TRAP and selected adverse health outcomes. Health outcomes were selected based on evidence of causality for general air pollution (broader than TRAP) cited in authoritative reviews, relevance for public health and policy, and resources available. The Panel used a s

Ambient and Traffic-Related Air Pollution Exposures as Novel Risk Factors for Metabolic Dysfunction and Type 2 Diabetes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Diabetes mellitus is a top contributor to the global burden of mortality and disability in adults. There has also been a slow, but steady rise in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in youth. The current review summarizes recent findings regarding the impact of increased exposure to air pollutants on the type 2 diabetes epidemic. RECENT FINDINGS: Human and animal studies provide strong evidence that exposure to ambient and traffic-related air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) play an important role in metabolic dysfunc

Traffic-related outdoor air pollution and respiratory symptoms in children: the impact of adjustment for exposure measurement error.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor concentrations of soot and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) outside of schools have been associated with children's respiratory and eye symptoms. We assessed how adjustments for measurement error affect these associations. METHODS: Concentrations of air pollutants outside children's schools were validated by personal measurements of exposure to traffic-related air pollution. We estimated prevalence ratios of 4 health outcomes (current wheeze, conjunctivitis, phlegm, and elevated total serum immunoglobulin E) using school outdoor measurements, and then adjusted for measurement error

Exploring the impact of traffic-related air pollution on the gut microbiota of school-age children: A pilot study.

Over the last few years, investigating the changes of gut microbiota after the exposure to airborne pollution has gained increasing interest, due to the evidence that altered microbial communities may contribute to the development of chronic diseases. The aim of the present pilot study was to investigate the gut microbiota composition of school-age children in relation to their living environment. In particular, the impact of air pollution, diet, body mass index, and environmental tobacco smoke, on the richness and diversity of the gut microbiota of children, was evaluated. The gut microbiota c

Glass microspheres in road dust of the city of Kielce (south-central Poland) as markers of traffic-related pollution.

Glass microspheres are widely used as reflective components in road and pavement marking materials. They commonly occur in road dust mixed w … and S. Because of their stability and chemical composition, glass microspheres are good markers of traffic-related pollution in different environmental archives. Of different elements present in Kielce road dust, the fraction < 0.125 mm was distinctly abundant in zirconium, the main constituent of disk brakes or brake pads and a potential marker of road traffic pollution. …

Traffic-Related Air Pollution as a Risk Factor for Dementia: No Clear Modifying Effects of APOEɛ4 in the Betula Cohort.

It is widely known that the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ɛ4 allele imposes a higher risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent evidence suggests that exposure to air pollution is also a risk factor for AD, and results from a few studies indicate that the effect of air pollution on cognitive function and dementia is stronger in APOEɛ4 carriers than in non-carriers. Air pollution and interaction with APOEɛ4 on AD risk thus merits further attention. We studied dementia incidence over a 15-year period from the longitudinal Betula study in Northern Sweden. As a marker for long-term exposure to traffic-re

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution and risk of development of childhood asthma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The question of whether children's exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) contributes to their development of asthma is unresolved. We conducted a systematic review and performed meta-analyses to analyze the association between TRAP and asthma development in childhood. DATA SOURCES: We systematically reviewed epidemiological studies published until 8 September 2016 and available in the Embase, Ovid MEDLINE (R), and Transport databases. STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, PARTICIPANTS, AND INTERVENTIONS: We included studies that examined the association between chi

Traffic noise, air pollution, and greenness in relation to age-related macular degeneration: Evidence from a cross-national cohort study.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is influenced not only by biological factors but also by the broader urban environment, yet evidence integrating multiple environmental exposures remains limited. We examined the associations of residential road traffic noise, fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5), and green space with AMD risk using data from the UK Biobank (207,859 controls and 5571 incident AMD cases) and an independent hospital-based cohort from Tianjin, China (286 controls and 233 cases). Environmental exposures were assessed using harmonized metrics, and associations were estimated

Spatial and spectral mapping of traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) nanoparticles in relation to plaques and inflammatory markers in an Alzheimer disease model.

Chronic exposure to traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is linked to increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease (AD). Ultrafine particulate matter (UFPM) is a suspected driver of TRAP neurotoxicity, but its spatial interactions with AD pathology remain poorly defined. We investigated the distribution, composition, and pathological context of TRAP-derived UFPM in the hippocampus of TgF344-AD rats chronically exposed to TRAP or filtered air (FA) for 14 months. Using a multimodal imaging workflow that combines enhanced darkfield hyperspectral imaging (EDF-HSI) with

Traffic-related air pollution links with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Denmark: Developmental periods of susceptibility and sex-specificity.

Literature supports that higher early life exposure to air pollution arising from combustion, e.g., traffic exhaust and electric power generation, is associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, little is known about whether certain periods of exposure during fetal or childhood brain development are more important, i.e. whether there are critical windows of exposure, or whether associations differ by child sex. To address these gaps, we performed a population-based case-cohort study including singletons born 1981-2008 using Danish national registry data resources.

Does traffic-related air pollution exposure alter blood gas parameters in recreationally trained male cyclists during prolonged endurance exercise?

Exposure to air pollution has been a significant challenge in large cities as São Paulo, Brazil, particularly for individuals exercising outdoors. The increasing on ventilation (VE) during physical effort can lead to greater pollutant inhalation. Our goal in the present study evaluated whether air pollution exposure affects venous blood gases and if it has an impact on performance during a 50-km cycling time trial (TT). Ten male cyclists performed the TT in an environmental chamber under TRAP and filtered air conditions. Venous blood samples collected pre- and post-TT were analyzed for pH, PvC

Association between traffic-related air pollution and asthma in preschool children in a national Japanese nested case-control study.

OBJECTIVES: There has been little study on the effect of traffic-related air pollution on the incidence and persistence of asthma in preschool children. We evaluated the association of exposure to traffic-related air pollution with the incidence/persistence of asthma during the first 3 years of life using a population-based study. METHODS: A baseline survey was conducted in 1½-year-old children (n=63,266). A follow-up survey at 3 years of age (n=43,343) identified new-onset asthma cases (n=853) and persistence of asthma (n=214). In the prevalence/persistence study, the outdoor concentrations

The association between traffic-related air pollution and risk of non-reassuring fetal heart rate in newborns at birth.

Despite the biological plausibility linking traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) to adverse intrapartum outcomes, few studies have investigated its association with non-reassuring fetal heart rate (NRFHR), particularly in regions with high pollution levels. This study aimed to examine the relationship between prenatal exposure to multiple TRAP indicators and the risk of NRFHR in Sabzevar, Iran, a city characterized by elevated vehicular emissions. A cross-sectional study was conducted, including 4051 mother-infant pairs delivering at the sole maternity hospital in Sabzevar between May 2016 and
