BACKGROUND: Chest trauma is responsible for 50% of deaths due to trauma. This kind of death usually occurs immediately after the trauma has occurred.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the various aspects of chest trauma in patients admitted to two main trauma centers located in the Isfahan Province, Iran.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: During a six month period, a cross-sectional study of 100 patients who had sustained a chest injury was carried out. Data, including; age, sex, time of accident, trauma mechanism, organ injury, hospitalization length, complications, and patient outcomes…

INTRODUCTION: Gunshot wounds (GSWs) to the face are an infrequent occurrence outside of a war zone. However, when they occur, they constitute a significant reconstructive challenge. We present our 10-year experience at an urban level I trauma center to define the patterns of injury, assess the morbidity and mortality, and estimate the cost to the health care system.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on all patients admitted to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center with GSWs to the head and neck region between January 1997 and January 2007. Those who had sustained GSWs to the face requiring o

Millions of individuals sustain traumatic injuries each year, yet the emotional impact of hospitalization and acute medical care remains understudied. Trauma-informed care (TIC) offers a framework for reducing retraumatization and supporting both patients and providers, but little is known about how TIC is understood or applied in trauma centers. This qualitative study used a human-centered design approach to examine healthcare workers' experiences, perceptions, and training needs related to TIC within a Level 1 trauma center to inform development of a training on TIC. This study employed a qu…

PURPOSE: Organized trauma systems improve coordination of care and may enhance the efficiency of trauma management, potentially improving outcomes and reducing hospital length of stay and costs. The aim of the study was to evaluate key process-of-care indicators and clinical outcomes before and after the introduction of a comprehensive trauma pathway.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective-prospective cohort study at Rivoli Hospital, Italy. Trauma patients admitted to the Emergency Department (ED) between 2024 and 2025 who met the criteria for trauma team activation were prospect

BACKGROUND: Traumatic craniofacial injuries result in negative psychological sequelae. This study aimed to analyze Injured Trauma Survivor Screen (ITSS) results to assess posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risk in traumatic craniofacial injuries and identify corresponding factors that may contribute to increased risk.
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort analysis, all patients with craniofacial fractures, identified via International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes, who were screened with the ITSS survey at a single level 1 trauma center from June 2022 to January 2024 were inc

BACKGROUND: Though post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can result from violent trauma, another trajectory is possible-post-traumatic growth (PTG). Studies of PTG find correlations with better mental and physical health in addition to less substance abuse.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to fill a gap in the literature by determining levels of post-traumatic growth in victims of penetrating trauma.
METHODS: Study personnel contacted potential subjects by phone, inviting them to complete questionnaires: the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTG-I), the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (

Patients with lower extremity orthopedic trauma are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). American College of Surgeons data revealed that a New York Level 2 Trauma Center administered unfractionated heparin (UFH) four times more often, and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) two-and-a-half times less often, than national averages, despite institutional and national guidelines supporting use of LMWH over UFH. We retrospectively reviewed VTE prophylaxis practices in adult patients with lower extremity orthopedic trauma at the institution to identify trends and/or aberrant administra

BACKGROUND: Nosocomial pneumonia is common in trauma patients and associated with an adverse prognosis. We recently externally validated and recalibrated an existing formula to predict nosocomial pneumonia risk. Identifying more potential predictors could aid in a more accurate prediction of nosocomial pneumonia risk in level-1 trauma patients. This study aims to identify predictors of nosocomial pneumonia in level-1 trauma patients available in the emergency department or shortly after, and examine their added predictive value to an existing prediction model by Croce.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and causes of facial fractures differ between patients, but patterns arise within populations. These patterns vary by gender, age, and between countries. This study aims to determine variables to identify patients at risk for facial fractures in a United States trauma population.
METHODS: This is a single-center study of Trauma Registry data, inclusive of years July 1, 2016, to January 31, 2022. Inclusion criteria were based upon all trauma patients. Confirmation of a non-isolated facial fracture (dependent variable) was verified using ICD10 diagnosis codes. A logist

BACKGROUND: Burnout and anxiety compromise physical and mental well-being of nurses and jeopardize patient safety. Personal, professional, and workplace characteristics have been associated with burnout and anxiety across diverse practice settings, yet none in rural, community trauma centers. We sought to identify the severity and predictors of burnout and anxiety in the trauma nursing staff of a rural Level I trauma center.
METHODS: A convenience sample of trauma nurses from the emergency department (ED), intensive care unit (ICU), and trauma ward was voluntarily surveyed using a demographic…

PURPOSE: Pediatric thoracic trauma differs from those of adult in terms of the small anatomy and rapid tissue recovery. Therefore, it is important to know the characteristics of the pediatric thoracic trauma to improve treatment results. In addition, this study examined the changes in pediatric thoracic trauma features and results from the establishment of a level 1 regional trauma center.
METHODS: Data of 168 patients' ≤ 15 years old diagnosed with thoracic trauma between 2008 and 2019 were retrospectively analyzed.

The objective of this study was to describe the incidence of complications in trauma patients that could be prevented, diagnosed, or managed by a consulting acute care physiatrist. Demographic and complication data were extracted by chart review of adult trauma patients admitted to a Canadian academic trauma center. Subjects were included if they had a diagnosis of traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or multiple injuries resulting in an Injury Severity Score greater than 15. Means and standard deviations were calculated for continuous variables and frequencies for categorical data. Sec

We retrospectively reviewed all pediatric patients (< 18 years old) who presented to a Level I trauma center from 1984 to 1994 with noniatrogenic vascular trauma. There were 48 patients (42 male and 6 female) ages 2 to 17 years. Mechanism of injury included gunshot wounds (34) stab wounds (10), and blunt trauma (4). The lower extremities were most commonly injured (31), followed by upper extremity (17), trunk (8), and neck (4). Twenty-one (44%) patients had associated nonvascular injuries (primarily orthopedic or peripheral nerve). Eighteen (37%) patients underwent preoperative angiography for

BACKGROUND: Hollow viscus injuries (HVIs) present less frequently than solid organ injuries in patients with blunt abdominal trauma, potentially leading to significantly increased morbidity and mortality rates. Modern imaging equipment, confidently used for diagnosing solid organ injuries, may fail to identify hollow viscus injuries. In this study, we aim to present our tertiary center's experience with this entity.
METHODS: Patients treated in our clinic from April 2011 to December 2021 for hollow viscus injury following blunt abdominal trauma were included in this study. We recorded and ret

INTRODUCTION: Suicide claims many lives globally, each year. For every person that dies by suicide, multitudes more attempt it. A national shortage of psychiatrists may prevent many individuals from receiving timely mental health care. For many individuals, the primary entry point into the healthcare system is through the emergency department. The trauma service frequently treats patients with severe self-inflicted injuries and for many this is not the first time. This represents an opportunity for intervention to disrupt the cycle and prevent future death.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospecti

Even with encouraging recipient outcomes, transplantation using donation after circulatory death (DCD) is still limited. A major barrier to this type of transplantation is the consequences of warm ischemia on graft survival; however, preservation techniques may reduce the consequences of cardiac arrest and provide better organ conservation. Furthermore, DCD in trauma patients could further expand organ donation. We present five cases in which organs were retrieved and transplanted successfully using normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) in trauma patients. Prompt critical care support and surg
