Care of patients with blunt cardiac trauma is challenging for bedside nurses because of the potentially elusive and subtle nature of clinical findings associated with such trauma. An understanding of the forces exerted during the trauma episode will assist nurses in the assessment and search for hidden injuries. A high index of suspicion and continued cautious assessment and attention to subtle changes in the patient's physical condition are essential. Keen attention to changes in the patient's vital signs, cardiac output, ECG findings, pulses, and fluid volume status alert nurses to potential

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To identify evidence-based reports on the epidemiology of head injuries to develop guidelines for primary prevention activities by public health nurses.
BACKGROUND: Head injury is a major cause of morbidity, mortality, disability and lost years of productive life in the population under 40-45 years of age. Prevention strategies such as legislation on car seat belts, drink driving and health and safety at work have led to reductions in its incidence. As well as the personal repercussions for those injured and their families, there are resource implications for healthcare pr

Trauma-informed care is an emerging value that is seen as fundamental to effective and contemporary mental health nursing practice. Trauma-informed care, like recovery, leaves mental health nurses struggling to translate these values into day-to-day nursing practice. Many are confused about what individual actions they can take to support these values. To date, the most clearly articulated policy to emerge from the trauma-informed care movement in Australia has been the agreement to reduce, and wherever possible, eliminate the use of seclusion and restraint. Confronted with the constant churn

BACKGROUND: Burnout, turnover, and eroded trust between nurses and healthcare organizations worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to threaten workforce stability. Addressing these issues requires understanding both individual and system-level contributors to nurse distress.
PURPOSE: This study sought to identify nurse-endorsed strategies for reducing burnout and improving organizational resilience through analysis of pandemic-era survey data.
METHODS: A qualitative content analysis was conducted using responses from two organizational surveys completed during the pandemic. Traum

AIM: Examine frameworks of myth in the theory and treatment of sequalae of intimate and interpersonal traumas, often seen and experienced by practicing nurses.
DESIGN: A discursive narrative review using a trauma-informed lens.
METHODS: Review of existing frameworks using myth to understand or treat trauma. Due to limited literature from 1945 to 2023, a strategy akin to snowball sampling was used: exploration of source references, an unstructured interview, and a synthesis of existing approaches to interpersonal and intimate trauma.
RESULTS: Effective treatments for post-traumatic stress di

BACKGROUND: Trauma resuscitation is time sensitive and complex. Whole blood (WB) and blood components are standard treatments for trauma related hemorrhage, yet their nursing workload and transfusion time have not been well evaluated.
PURPOSE: To assess feasibility of a simulation-based crossover trial and obtain preliminary estimates comparing nursing workload and transfusion completion time between WB and blood component administration.
METHODS: A randomized crossover pilot study using in situ simulation was conducted with experienced trauma nurses. Time-motion analysis measured transfusio

BACKGROUND: Nursing students exposed to traumatized patients during clinical are at risk of developing secondary traumatic stress (STS). However, the study of STS in this population has been limited by both a lack of clarity on the concept of STS and the lack of generalizable findings.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, severity, and experience of STS in traditional, non-accelerated prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students in the United States. The relationship between STS and personal and clinical learning environment factors was also explored.

IMPORTANCE: As the nursing home population continues to increase, an understanding of preventable injuries becomes exceedingly important. Although other fall-related injuries have been characterized, little attention has been dedicated to facial trauma.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence of facial trauma among nursing home residents and detail mechanisms of injury, injury characteristics, and patient demographic data.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was used to calculate a weighted national incidence of facial trauma among individuals

BACKGROUND: Limited guidance exists for pediatric trauma centers (PTCs) regarding best practice for measuring and reviewing performance improvement (PI) in the child physical abuse population. To move PTC programs toward standardized guidelines and PI practices, current practice and points of consensus among level 1 and 2 PTCs across the United States were assessed.
METHODS: Utilizing a two-round, modified Delphi methodology, electronic surveys were distributed to pediatric trauma program managers and coordinators representing 125 PTCs. Survey data included demographics, coding practices, def

Trauma is the leading cause of death in people under the age of 45. Guns, drugs, and street violence contribute to this growing epidemic. As a result, there is an increased incidence of lower extremity vascular trauma. The most common cause of vascular injury is gunshot wounds. This article presents two case studies to illustrate the complex nursing management of this patient population. It is important for nurses to be aware of the physiologic and psychological treatment of these patients. A detailed nursing plan of care is also included.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Nurses often encounter traumatic events in their clinical practice. Trauma can have both negative effects, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and positive effects, such as growth and positive emotions. Posttraumatic growth is beneficial for nurses, as it contributes to positive mental health outcomes and increases life satisfaction. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Our study confirms that nurses commonly experience posttraumatic growth after being exposed to traumatic events, and the level of growth is moderate. We have identified indiv

INTRODUCTION: Emergency nurses routinely care for patients and families experiencing traumatic events, death, and violence. Repeated exposure to others' trauma may contribute to secondary traumatic stress, a type of psychological distress with symptoms similar to those of posttraumatic stress disorder. Although emergency nurses experience high levels of secondary traumatic stress, the individual and organizational factors that contribute to secondary traumatic stress require further exploration. Identifying these factors will contribute to the development of interventions that target secondary

SB validated many aspects of elderly trauma research and physiology. Although he had a prolonged length of stay and several complications, he survived multiple injuries and had a positive outcome. Exact causes for his complications and processes cannot be separated into degenerative or injury-related and are thus difficult to identify. With a review of aging physiology and SB's history, it is clear that his course and physiological responses to treatments were affected by his age and ability to respond to the demands placed on him. (See Table 5 for pertinent nursing diagnoses for SB.) There ar

BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses are routinely exposed to workplace trauma, placing them at increased risk of secondary traumatic stress. Although body awareness has been proposed as a potential coping resource for stress regulation, its role in relation to secondary traumatic stress remains poorly understood.
AIM: To examine the association between body awareness and secondary traumatic stress among emergency nurses and to explore how body awareness is experienced and used as a coping resource to workplace trauma.
METHODS: 100 emergency nurses completed the Multidimensional Assessment of Intero

There are many challenges in providing trauma-informed healthcare to pediatric victims of sexual abuse and their families. We address this through collaborative interprofessional efforts within our hospital facility, located in a Midwestern adult Level 1 and pediatric trauma center. Our sexual assault nurse examiner team is composed of eight nurses and provides 24/7 coverage. The child abuse team located in our hospital includes one board-certified child abuse pediatrician, one certified pediatric nurse practitioner, and a licensed clinical social worker. The application of trauma-informed car

Professionals in social work and nursing meet people who, due to trauma, struggle with self-regulation of emotions and social behavior. Caring for trauma survivors requires connection and compassion. Previous research has indicated that many professionals, some with their own trauma histories, do not feel sufficiently equipped to practice self-care or cope with challenging communication. To address how insecurity and trauma are rooted in deeper individual and structural causes of social injustice, social workers and nursing students (N = 29) were invited to participate in action research and a

Pregnant women and their infants are vulnerable, during and following a terrorist event. The threat poses a dual challenge: assessment and treatment of the trauma patient, and assessment and treatment of the pregnant woman. Some injuries in the pregnant woman are obvious; some injuries may not be easily observable. Obtaining an obstetric history coupled with careful nursing assessments ensure prompt and appropriate emergency treatment. Obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, and perinatal nurses are uniquely qualified to perform these assessments because of their understa

BACKGROUND: Vicarious trauma results from repeated exposure to the emotional or physical suffering of others and is considered an occupational hazard for those in caring professions. It can negatively impact clinicians' personal and professional lives and the quality of patient care. However, research specifically examining vicarious trauma among trauma clinicians remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine vicarious trauma experienced by trauma clinicians providing direct care to trauma patients.
METHODS: This is an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study involving trauma clin
