Traditional methods for Chagas disease prevention are targeted at domestic vector reduction, as well as control of transfusion and maternal-fetal transmission. Population connectivity of Trypanosoma cruzi-infected vectors and hosts, among sylvatic, ecotone and domestic habitats could jeopardize targeted efforts to reduce human exposure. This connectivity was evaluated in a Mexican community with reports of high vector infestation, human infection, and Chagas disease, surrounded by agricultural and natural areas. We surveyed bats, rodents, and triatomines in dry and rainy seasons in three adjac

In the Gran Chaco region, control of Triatoma infestans has been limited by persistent domestic infestations despite the efforts of the Vector Control Services. In Paraguay, this region is the highest endemic area in the country, showing high levels of indoor and outdoor infestation. Although sylvatic T. infestans have been found in the Bolivian and Argentine Chaco, similar searches for sylvatic populations of this species in Paraguay had been unsuccessful over the last 20 years. Here we present a new approach to detecting sylvatic Triatominae, using a trained dog, which has successfully confi…

BACKGROUND: Triatomines are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease in Latin America. The most effective vector, Triatoma infestans, has been controlled successfully in much of Latin America using insecticide spraying. Though rarely undertaken, surveillance programs are necessary in order to identify new infestations and estimate the intensity of triatomine bug infestations in domestic and peridomestic habitats. Since hosts exposed to triatomines develop immune responses to salivary antigens, these responses can be evaluated for their usefulness as epidemiological…

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, remains a significant public health issue in South America, with increasing concern over its potential transmission in the USA. Triatoma sanguisuga, a triatomine vector, is found in Southern states of the USA, including Texas, raising questions about the local transmission dynamics of T. cruzi. This study aims to characterize Trypanosoma cruzi infection in Triatoma sanguisuga collected from dog kennels in Bulverde and Spring Branch, Texas, with a focus on parasite prevalence and load, genotypic diversity, and blood-feeding …

Environmentally-induced developmental instability has frequently been assessed using fluctuating asymmetry (FA) methods. For Triatoma infestans, the major vector of Chagas disease, the combined effects of host-feeding sources and habitats affected wing developmental instability depending on sex in Figueroa villages, northwest Argentina. Here we investigated whether habitat, sex, season/year and insecticide applications affected wing developmental instability in T. infestans populations from Amamá and other rural villages of northwest Argentina over a four-year period. We measured the occurrenc…

BACKGROUND: Triatoma infestans -the principal vector of the infection that causes Chagas disease- defies elimination efforts in the Gran Chaco region. This study identifies the types of human-made or -used structures that are key sources of these bugs in the initial stages of house reinfestation after an insecticide spraying campaign.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We measured demographic and blood-feeding parameters at two geographic scales in 11 rural communities in Figueroa, northwest Argentina. Of 1,297 sites searched in spring, 279 (21.5%) were infested. Bug abundance per site and f…

The presence of Triatoma infestans in habitats treated with insecticides constitutes a frequent problem in endemic areas. Basing our study on the hypothesis that descendants of a residual population should be more similar to the pre-treatment population than to any other, we compared the indications of two quantitative morphological approaches. This study seeks to find the origin of 247 T. infestans from three populations found in two chicken coops and a goat corral after treatment with insecticides. The results obtained by quantitative morphology suggest that the T. infestans found between th…

Triatoma guasayana (Wygodzinsky & Abalos) is a peridomestic triatomine with epidemiological importance in Bolivia, that may play an important role in the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas). In this study, two parameters of vectorial capacity were evaluated: the interval of feeding-defecation time and metacyclogenesis, in adult males and females and nymphal instars II to V of T. guasayana with comparisons with Triatoma infestans (Klug) and T. sordida (Stal). The results showed a close relationship between ingestion of blood and beginning of defecation. Values were negative in T. infesta…

Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, a zoonosis involving domestic and sylvatic mammalian reservoirs. Since scarce information has been published about the susceptibility of T. cruzi lineages to other triatomine species besides Triatoma infestans, we evaluate the susceptibility of T. infestans and Mepraia spinolai to different T. cruzi lineages, originated from naturally infected Octodon degus rodents as mammal host. Xenodiagnosis-PCR methods to detect T. cruzi positive rodents and genotyping to differentiate T. cruzi lineages (TcI, TcIIb, TcIId and TcIIe) identified sin…

Megaselia scalaris (Loew) is a cosmopolitan and synanthropic scuttle fly, eclectic in its feeding habits and acts as detritivore, parasite, facultative parasite, and parasitoid. Here we report for the first time M. scalaris infesting laboratory colonies of Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva, the most important Chagas disease vector in semiarid areas of Brazil. M. scalaris larvae were found feeding inside bugs; pupae were found in the esophagus and intestinal regions of T. brasiliensis through dissection. Other relevant information about this finding is also described in this note, including some prev…

Eight Triatoma dimidiata populations from different geographic regions were compared along with related species using traditional morphometry of head characters. A method for removing allometric change was used for the intraspecific comparisons, and scaling for the isometric change of size was used for the interspecific comparisons. The intraspecific comparison showed significant head shape differences between T. dimidiata populations correlating with geography, showing a separation between the northern, intermediate, and southern collections (more evident in females), and supporting the idea …

Triatoma infestans is one of the primary vectors of Chagas disease. This vector has developed increasing resistance to pyrethroids, the main insecticides used for its control. Recent studies have highlighted the repellent and lethal effects of Cannabis sativa on insects, suggesting its potential use in pest management. Based on this, we hypothesize that C. sativa could be a viable bioactive for controlling T. infestans. To test this hypothesis, acetone and ethanol extracts were obtained from the inflorescences of C. sativa L. (Deep Mandarine variety) using sonication. These extracts were analy…

BACKGROUND: Triatomine control campaigns have traditionally consisted of spraying the inside of houses with pyrethroid insecticides. However, exposure to sublethal insecticide doses after the initial application is a common occurrence and may have phenotypic consequences for survivors. Here, using Triatoma infestans (the main vector of Chagas disease in the Southern Cone of South America) as a model species, we quantified the effects of exposure to a sublethal dose of pyrethroid insecticide on wing morphology. We tested if the treatment (i) induced a plastic effect (change in the character mea…

BACKGROUND: Triatoma protracta is a triatomine found naturally throughout many regions of California and has been shown to invade human dwellings and bite residents. A man living in Mendocino County, California, reported developing anaphylactic reactions due to the bite of an "unusual bug", which he had found in his home for several years.
METHODS: We conducted environmental, entomological, and clinical investigations to examine the risk for kissing bug invasion, presence of Trypanosoma cruzi, and concerns for Chagas disease at this human dwelling with triatomine invasion.
RESULTS: Home asse…

The interruption of vectorial transmission of Chagas disease by Triatoma dimidiata in central America is a public health challenge that cannot be resolved by insecticide application alone. In this study, we collected information on previously known household risk factors for infestation in 11 villages and more than 2,000 houses in Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, and we constructed multivariate models and used multimodel inference to evaluate their importance as predictors of infestation in the region. The models had moderate ability to predict infested houses (sensitivity, 0.32-0.54) and…

Antibacterial proteins like lysozyme are important components of the insect non-specific immune response against bacteria. The complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) encoding a new lysozyme from Triatoma infestans, named lysozyme2, has been amplified by polymerase chain reaction and the rapid amplification of cDNA ends technique. The gene is expressed in the small intestine of the insect. The deduced protein sequence shows up to 70% similarity to lysozymes from other species. Furthermore, the protein exhibits significant structural concordance to other insect lysozymes. A striking feature …

An ecological control method, using environmental management operations, based on biological and behavioral characteristics of Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811), was implemented as a pilot project in an area of Costa Rica where the bug is prevalent. The sample was represented by 20 houses with peridomestic colonies (two also had indoor infestation), divided in two equivalent groups of 10 each. In one group we intervened the houses, i.e. all objects or materials that were serving as artificial ecotopes for the bugs were removed, and the second group was used as control houses. After a year o…

A population of 216 specimens of Stenocereus eichlamii (Cactaceae, Subfamily Cereoideae) was surveyed for Triatoma ryckmani (vector of Chagas disease) in a one hectare plot of semiarid habitat in Guatemala. Out of 44 plants that had dead and dry sections, 24 plants had a total of 103 specimens of T. ryckmani. In comparison with other areas of Guatemala, T ryckmani is well established in the semiarid ecosystem (Infestation index 54.5, density = 2.3 and crowding index 4.3). The insects were mainly found (52.4%) in the dead portions of S. eichlamii 2.0 to 3.2 m above the ground (X2 = 26.0, P < 0.…

In three rural villages of northwest Argentina, the overall proportion of domiciliary Triatoma infestans infected with Trypanosoma cruzi was 49% among 1,316 bugs individually examined for infection in March and October 1992). Most of the variation among individual households in the proportion of infected triatomines was explained by variations among houses in the proportion of bugs that fed on dogs or cats, the prevalence of infected dogs or cats, and the proportion of bugs that fed on humans, according to a logistic multiple regression analysis. The effects of human infection rates on bug inf…

Effects of the presence of chickens on population density of the bug Triatoma infestans, principal vector of Chagas disease, were investigated by standardized sampling (indoors and peridomestically) from sixty-eight houses of three rural communities in north-west Argentina, during March 1992. The domiciliary density of T. infestans increased linearly with the percentage of bugs that fed on chickens, as identified by agar double-diffusion tests. Bug density was significantly higher in houses where hens usually nested indoors than in those where they did not, as determined by concurrent direct o…
