Corticobasal syndrome (CBS) is characterized by a slow progressive cognitive decline, apraxia, myoclonus, dystonia, and parkinsonism. Benztropine (Cogentin ) was evaluated for its ability to block cocaine's physiological and subjective effects in humans. In healthy, recreational users of cocaine, placebo, or benztropine (1, 2, and 4 mg orally) was given 2 hr before subjects self-administered 0.9 mg/kg of cocaine intranasally. Parkinsonism is most of the time caused by idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD). Considering the differences in therapeutic response and prognosis, in vivo discrimination between IPD and "parkinsonism-plus" syndromes is important. The alkaloids swainsonine and calystegines are found in some Ipomoea species. Swainsonine is a potent cellular glycosidase inhibitor that often poisons livestock while the calystegines inhibit cellular glycosides and can cause cellular glycoside dysfunction. Cyanobacteria can produce cyanotoxins such as microcystin-LR (MC), saxitoxin (STX), and anatoxin-a (ANTX-a) which are harmful to humans and other animals.
