After the occurrence of a multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in a prison of Lower Saxony (Germany), 223 contact persons (178 inmates, 45 staff members) were identified. To detect latent tuberculosis infections, all contact persons were tested with the tuberculin skin test (TST) and the interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA). An additional standardised questionnaire on anamnestic information and risk factors was completed by the participants. The statistical analysis included 149 male inmates with a mean age of 39 years. 61.1% of the inmates were born in Germany, 14.8% were born in the USSR or, re

The use of provocative Koch test proved most effective in enhancing sensitivity of serological diagnostic tests EIA and IHA with PHA. This contributed to more accurate assessment of the tuberculous process activity in patients with advanced destruction of the kidneys. Quantitation of antituberculous antibodies may serve an additional criterium in evaluation of effectiveness of urological tuberculosis chemotherapy.

To determine whether repeating the tuberculin test after a brief interval might result in tuberculin conversion, we tested 213 healthy volunteers twice, 1 month apart, with 5 TU of tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD). Three nontuberculous mycobacterial antigens (PPD-G, PPD-Y, and PPD-B) were also applied with the first tuberculin test. By widely used criteria, 14 volunteers (6.6 per cent) converted their tuberculin tests from negative to positive on the second testing. Whereas 13 of 103 subjects (12.6 per cent) with nontuberculous antigen sensitivity converted their tuberculin test to…

Despite widespread adoption and maturity, paper persistence endures in many Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, particularly for complex workflows involving multiple steps from different stakeholders separated in time. In our health system, Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) testing was one such workflow where a Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) must be administered and then correctly read 48-72 hours later and documented. This paper discusses a low-resource workflow analysis and clinical decision support approach to replace a paper workflow and garner the benefits of the EHR for clearer docume

BACKGROUND: Tuberculin skin test (TST) has played an essential in the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) for nearly a century.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the general characteristics of patients tested with TST in a tertiary hospital within two years.
METHODS: All patients who were evaluated to screen for tuberculosis and received a TST were included. The Mantoux method was used for TST administration.
RESULTS: A total of 661 patients, 345 (52.2%) men and 316 (47.8%) women, with a mean age of 43.0 ±15.9 years, were included in the study. Accordingly, TST was pe

AIMS: To evaluate the prevalence of positive tuberculin skin tests (TST) in internationally adopted and immigrant children. To identify risk factors for positive TST in these populations.
METHODS: The study was a retrospective medical record review in a tertiary care pediatric hospital. All children evaluated at the International Adoption and Immigrant Health Clinic of CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal, Canada, between 01-01-1998 and 31-12-2001 were included. Demographic and anthropometrical data, BCG vaccination, TST, chest X-ray results and treatment were extracted from the medical records of

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis patients are at high risk for tuberculosis, and a tuberculin skin test (TST) is not usually helpful in detecting tuberculosis infection because of anergic reactions. Prophylactic therapy against tuberculosis in dialysis patients is important to enhance transplantation success. Herein we evaluated the value of TST in screening for tuberculosis and analyzed any compounding factors that might affect the results of the test in hemodialysis patients in an endemic area of Turkey.
METHODS: A total of 187 (96 female, 91 male) patients were screened using a 2-step TST. Test re

OBJECTIVES: To better identify inmates with tuberculosis infection at admission and to have more accurate estimates of conversion rates with annual retesting, I evaluated two-step tuberculin skin testing of newly admitted inmates at the Addiction Center of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections.
METHOD: In a population of inmates admitted to the Addiction Center between January and May 1994, a second tuberculin skin test was performed 1 week after the first for those who initially had a negative response.
RESULTS: There were 628 admissions during the study period; 51 of these inmates (8

This study examined the prevalence and determinants of tuberculin reactors and the booster response in 272 (97%) residents and 218 (69%) staff of an urban nursing home where a case of miliary TB was being investigated. Many subjects were foreign born (56%), and 15% had a history of BCG vaccination (34% of staff). Testing was done with 5 TU PPD-S (Connaught). Those with < 10 mm induration at 48 h were retested at 1 wk. Test sizes > 9 mm were classified positive (reactors). A questionnaire was given to collect information on risk factors for a positive test. Results showed that 28% (36% staff an

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Limited data exist for the performance of QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-tube Test (QFT-IT) in comparison to tuberculin skin test (TST) for detecting latent tuberculosis (LTB) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection from tuberculosis (TB)-endemic Asia-Pacific countries.
METHODS: A cohort study of Thai HIV-infected patients without history of TB or LTB treatment was conducted from March 2012 through March 2013. Each patient underwent simultaneous TST and QFT-IT.
RESULTS: Among the 150 enrolled subjects, the median age was 40 years (range 17-65), 53% wer

In order to determine the prevalence of latent infection due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in drug users and to provide centres for drug users with a practical tool for tuberculosis screening, 237 drug users were subjected to the Monotest and, for reference purposes, to the Mantoux test. The overall prevalence of subjects with a tuberculin skin reaction size > or = 5 mm in the Mantoux test was 25.7%; utilizing a cut-off of > or = 10 mm, the prevalence was 11.4%. Irrespective of cut-off, the Monotest showed a sensitivity of > 90% and a specificity of > 80%. At a prevalence of 25.7%, and with cu

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous sensitivity to the tuberculin antigen is thought to indicate latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Some guidelines suggest treating end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients for LTBI on the basis of tuberculin positivity. The prevalence of tuberculin sensitivity and cutaneous anergy in Indian patients with ESRD and the utility of the tuberculin test for predicting post-transplant tuberculosis are not known.
METHODS: We prospectively studied cutaneous tuberculin reactivity and anergy in 108 ESRD patients and 100 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Mumps antigen and tetan…
