Acute flaccid myelitis: not uncommon in rural Uganda?

Acute Flaccid Myelitis is a paralytic illness with significant similarities to poliomyelitis, and which affects predominantly children. It was first fully delineated only in 2014 in the USA, occurring in epidemic clusters with a likely overall increasing incidence. It has subsequently rapidly been identified in Europe, the UK, and Australasia and the Far East, confirming it to be an emerging, global, infectious neurological disease. It has, however, been very little studied in low- and middle-income countries-reflecting partly of the global imbalance in science and medical research, and partly

Human health and economic impact of neurocysticercosis in Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: Neurocysticercosis (NCC), caused by the pork tapeworm Taenia solium, is a major cause of acquired epilepsy in endemic regions. The Republic of Uganda, one of the great-lakes nations in East Africa, has undergone major strives of political instability in the past century, impeding control of T. solium and other foodborne diseases. Building on data on the epidemiology of NCC, we aimed to assess the health and economic impact of NCC-associated epilepsy and headache in Uganda. METHODS: We used DisMod II to generate an internally consistent, complete and age-stratified set of epidemiolo

Community perceptions of paediatric severe anaemia in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Severe anaemia remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children in sub-Saharan Africa. There is limited research on the beliefs and knowledge for paediatric severe anaemia in the region. The effect of these local beliefs and knowledge on the healthcare seeking of paediatric severe anaemia remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To describe community perceptions of paediatric severe anaemia in Uganda. METHODS: Sixteen in-depth interviews of caregivers of children treated for severe anaemia and six focus group discussions of community members were conducted in three regions of U

Validation of the Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will soon be the third leading global cause of death and is increasing rapidly in low/middle-income countries. There is a need for local validation of the Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), which can be used to identify those experiencing lifestyle impairment due to their breathing. METHODS: The SGRQ was professionally translated into Luganda and reviewed by our field staff and a local pulmonologist. Participants included a COPD-confirmed clinic sample and COPD-positive and negative members of the community who were enro

Kidney disease in Uganda: a community based study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The majority of studies on CKD in SSA have been conducted among HIV-infected populations and mainly from large health facilities. We determined the prevalence of CKD and its predictors among populations in communities in central Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Wakiso district using multi-stage sampling. Data was collected on age, sex, socio-economic status, history of alcohol intake, diabetes mellitus, hypertension and smoking. Measurement of blood pressu

HIV Prevention Efforts and Incidence of HIV in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: To assess the effect of a combination strategy for prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on the incidence of HIV infection, we analyzed the association between the incidence of HIV and the scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and medical male circumcision in Rakai, Uganda. Changes in population-level viral-load suppression and sexual behaviors were also examined. METHODS: Between 1999 and 2016, data were collected from 30 communities with the use of 12 surveys in the Rakai Community Cohort Study, an open, population-based cohort of persons 15 to 49 years of age. Retrospective study on cattle and poultry diseases in Uganda.

Cattle and poultry enterprises are among the major contributors to food security and socioeconomic empowerment of households in Uganda. However, various diseases constrain their productivity. A two-year retrospective study between April 2012 and March 2014 was conducted using records for cattle and poultry diseases diagnosed at the Central Diagnostic Laboratory (CDL) to determine prevalent diseases in Uganda. The laboratory received 836 samples from poultry (36.3%) and cattle (63.7%). Of the 836 samples, 47.5% had a definitive diagnosis of disease causation. Most of the cattle and poultry dise

Patterns of Human Plague in Uganda, 2008-2016.

Plague is a highly virulent fleaborne zoonosis that occurs throughout many parts of the world; most suspected human cases are reported from resource-poor settings in sub-Saharan Africa. During 2008-2016, a combination of active surveillance and laboratory testing in the plague-endemic West Nile region of Uganda yielded 255 suspected human plague cases; approximately one third were laboratory confirmed by bacterial culture or serology. Although the mortality rate was 7% among suspected cases, it was 26% among persons with laboratory-confirmed plague. Reports of an unusual number of dead rats in

Incidence and risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Globally, postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) remains a leading cause of maternal deaths. However in many low and middle income countries, there is scarcity of information on magnitude of and risk factors for PPH (blood loss of 500 ml or more). It is important to understand the relative contributions of different risk factors for PPH. We assessed the incidence of, and risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage among rural women in Uganda. METHODS: Between March 2013 and March 2014, a prospective cohort study was conducted at six health facilities in Uganda. Women were administered a question

Molecular epidemiology of rabies virus isolates in Uganda.

African field rabies virus isolates from domestic animals can be phylogenetically divided into three geographic lineages: Africa 1a (North and West Africa); Africa 1b (East and South Africa); Africa 2 (West Africa). Partial nucleotide sequences of the rabies virus nucleoprotein gene (203-nt) were obtained from five dogs and three goats in Uganda. The analyzed Ugandan field rabies viruses were categorized into the Africa 1a and Africa 1b lineages. The present study thus demonstrates that two African lineage-derived rabies viruses coexist in Uganda, which is located in the geographical region be
