Radius and Ulna Stress Fractures in a Patient with Neuromyelitis Optica: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Hemangiomas are benign tumors characterized by proliferation of blood vessels. A few hemangiomas are aggressive, characterized by bone expansion and extraosseous extension. These benign tumors may be mistaken for metatasis resulting in unnecessary biopsies, which have a high risk of hemorrhage. These hemangiomas can spread not just into the paraspinal soft tissues but also into the epidural region of the spinal canal causing cord compression and paraparesis. These clinical symptoms can be relieved by surgical decompression of the posterior elements, embolization or radiotherapy.

The effect of strontium ranelate on the healing of a fractured ulna with bone gap in rabbit.

BACKGROUND: Fracture healing in bone gap is one of the major challenges encountered in Orthopedic Surgery. At present, the treatment includes bone graft, employing either internal or external fixation which has a significant impact on the patient, family and even society. New drugs are emerging in the markets such as anabolic bone-forming agents including teriparatide and strontium ranelate to stimulate bone growth. Based on the mechanism of their actions, we embarked on a study on the healing of a fractured ulna with bone gap in a rabbit model. We segregated ten rabbits into two groups: five

[AN ANTERIOR NEUROVASCULAR INTERVAL APPROACH FOR FIXATION OF ULNA CORONOID PROCESS FRACTURE].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the advantages and effectiveness of anterior neurovascular interval approach for fixation of ulna coronoid process fracture. METHODS: Between February 2011 and April 2015, 8 patients with ulna coronoid process fracture were treated with open reduction and internal fixation by anterior neurovascular interval approach. There were 5 males and 3 females, aged from 14 to 62 years (mean, 34 years). Fractures were caused by falling in 5 cases, traffic accident in 2 cases, and crashing in 1 case. The time between injury and operation was 1-6 days (mean, 3.5 days). According

Stress fracture of the ulna associated with bisphosphonate therapy and use of walking aid.

We report a case of a stress fracture of the ulna secondary to long-term bisphosphonate therapy and walking cane. Physicians need to have a high index of suspicion of stress fractures occurring in patients complaining of chronic upper limb pain if they are on bisphosphonate therapy and are using walking aids. Stress fractures of the upper extremities are rare and are usually associated with athletes; however, a few recent case reports have shown an association between stress fractures of the upper extremities and the use of walking aids. The association between increased incidence of upper ext

[Internal fixation for the treatment of anteromedial facet fracture of the coronoid process of ulna].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of operative treatment for anteromedial facet fracture of the coronoid process of ulna, and to study its surgical exposures and fixation techniques. METHODS: From March 2005 to March 2010,18 patients with anteromedial facet fracture of the coronoid process of ulna were treated with open reduction and internal fixation. There were 12 males and 6 females with an average age of 37.8 years. A single midline posterior incision was used to expose the entire elbow joint. After elevating the full-thickness skin flaps, a lateral incision was made to expose and repai

Complex fracture-dislocations of the proximal ulna and radius in adults: a comprehensive classification.

BACKGROUND: Complex fracture-dislocations of the proximal ulna and radius include multiple anatomic lesions, the management of which is known to be demanding. Although several classifications have been proposed, none appear to be exhaustive, and most of them have neither therapeutic nor prognostic value. The purpose of this study was to design a comprehensive classification that may provide a guide for the operative management of these injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The classification is aimed at identifying definite anatomic lesions, called the "main lesions," the presence of which can aff

Spontaneous bilateral distal ulna fracture: an unusual complication in a rheumatoid patient.

Bilateral ulna stress fractures are extremely rare. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have osteopenic bone secondary to a variety of causes. We report a case of bilateral stress fractures of the ulna in an elderly patient with rheumatoid arthritis, and literature on this condition is reviewed. Prompt recognition and activity modification are essential to treat this rare injury. Recovery can take up to 12 weeks.

Osteochondral fractures of the glenoid fossa of the ulna in children: review of four cases.

Osteochondral fractures of the glenoid fossa of the ulna are exceptional injuries in children. These lesions can present diagnostic problems because the fragments are often radiolucent. We followed four children for 3, 6, and 24 months and 12 years, respectively. The elbow was definitely dislocated in two, and was probably dislocated in two other, children. The most reliable paraclinical examination was conventional sagittal tomography. Open revision is mandatory for reduction of the fracture and, when performed early, may lead to excellent functional results.

Pathologic fracture of the proximal ulna through a bone graft donor site.

Complications of harvesting autologous bone graft from the iliac crest and tibia are well known; exclusive use of upper extremity donor sites in hand surgery has therefore been advocated. Six weeks of postoperative elbow splinting has been recommended after harvest of large proximal ulnar grafts. We report two cases of pathologic fracture of the proximal ulna complicating local bone grafting and question whether the risk of fracture and the attendant patient inconvenience and potential joint stiffness incurred by postoperative immobilization are exceeded by the morbidity of carefully done ilia

[Fractures of the upper end of radius and ulna and recent dislocations of the elbow in children].

In this report concerned with luxation of the elbow and fractures of the upper end of two forearm bones in children emphasis is placed on the importance of the initial treatment, since sequelae are not corrected during growth. Correct therapy requires firstly a precise diagnosis, this depending on the obtaining of images of very good quality, if necessary taken during sleep if the child has to be anesthetized. Therapy should be as atraumatic as possible, particularly in the region of the head of radius, to avoid its subsequent necrosis.

Posterior dislocation of the radial head without fracture of the ulna. A case report.

Posterior radial head dislocation without fracture of the ulna in an adult is extremely rare. A case is presented in which immediate closed reduction, a short period of immobilization, and early active range of motion resulted in a very good outcome. Early detection by thorough physical examination and careful radiographic analysis is crucial for a good final result.

The Biomechanical Behavior of Fixation Options in Short Segment Radius and Ulna Diaphyseal Fractures.

PURPOSE: Plate fixation of radius and ulna shaft fractures has evolved due to a more complete understanding of the biology and mechanics. Screw fixation across six cortices has been adopted as the standard, purported to provide the optimal biological and mechanical environment for healing; however, recent investigations have proposed that four cortices of fixation may be sufficient. These recommendations are intended for segments of optimal length; however, it is less clear how these options perform in short segment fixation. Our objective was the determine the biomechanical behavior of fixati

Poor reliability and reproducibility of 3 different radiographical classification systems for distal ulna fractures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Classification of fractures can be valuable for research purposes but also in clinical work. Especially with  are fractures, such as distal ulna fractures, a treatment algorithm based on a classification can be helpful. We compared 3 different  classification systems of distal ulna fractures and investigated their reliability and reproducibility. PATIENTS AND METHODS: patients with 97 fractures of the distal ulna, excluding the ulnar styloid, were included. All fractures were  independently classified by 3 observers according to the classification by Biyani, AO/OTA 200…

Distal Radioulnar Joint, Distal Ulna Injury, and Lunate Facet Considerations in Distal Radius Fractures.

Injuries to the distal aspect of the ulna and the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) commonly occur concurrently with distal radius fractures. These fractures may also involve the sigmoid notch of the lunate facet of the radius. Each of these structures merits consideration when managing ulnar-sided injuries associated with distal radius fractures. Improper management of distal radioulnar complex injuries may result in limited wrist motion, persistent DRUJ instability, and pain despite successful fracture union. The distal ulna is the keystone of the distal radioulnar articulation. An understandin

Acute compartment syndrome after intramedullary nailing of isolated radius and ulna fractures in children.

BACKGROUND: There exist varying reports in the literature regarding the incidence of compartment syndrome (CS) after intramedullary (IM) fixation of pediatric forearm fractures. A retrospective review of the experience with this treatment modality at our institution was performed to elucidate the rate of postoperative CS and identify risk factors for developing this complication. METHODS: In this retrospective case series, we reviewed the charts of all patients treated operatively for isolated radius and ulnar shaft fractures from 2000 to 2009 at our institution and identified 113 patients wh
