Neurological diseases pose a devastating threat to human health with an increasingly substantial social and economic burden. Developing effective and safe preventive and therapeutic approaches for disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy remains a challenge in clinical practice. Compared to pharmacological treatments, non-invasive physical stimulation techniques directly modulate neural circuits and have emerged as promising methods for alleviating neurological impairments. Among them, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has demonstrated beneficial effects ac

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a non-invasive sonodynamic therapy that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for clinical use. Clinical trials have demonstrated that LIPUS ameliorates mild-to-moderate erectile dysfunction without adverse events. Histological analysis of the corpus cavernosum suggests that the therapeutic benefits of LIPUS may be attributed to alleviation of fibrosis, enhanced neovascularization, and promotion of innervation. Further investigations have revealed that LIPUS facilitates cavernous tissue repair through non-thermal mechanisms, inclu

INTRODUCTION: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a type of specific ultrasound that is delivered at low intensity and generated in pulsed wave mode. Previous studies have demonstrated the therapeutic applications of LIPUS in the healing or regeneration of several tissues. However, research on LIPUS therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED) is still limited.
OBJECTIVES: This literature review aims to summarize the clinical trials, clinical applications, and the molecular mechanisms of LIPUS in ameliorating ED.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed and MEDLINE

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound has a long history as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), whose intensity is below 300 mW/cm2, has been widely used in orthopedic rehabilitation treatment. However, the detailed bioeffects and underlying mechanisms of LIPUS treatment need to be explored.
OBJECTIVE: To make a comprehensive view of the field, bibliometric and visualization analysis was used to reveal the global research trends of LIPUS in orthopedics and rehabilitation treatment between 1994 and 2023.
METHODS: All literature data on LIPUS were retrieved from the We

Tooth wear and pain are the primary concerns of patients undergoing periodontal scaling. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of a new magnetostrictive ultrasonic scaler and a traditional piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler on tooth surface roughness and calculus removal and to determine their impacts on patient discomfort during supragingival cleaning. This article had two parts: an in vitro study and a clinical study. In the in vitro study, thirty teeth with subgingival calculus were randomly assigned to two scaling treatment groups: magnetostrictive scalers (n = 15) and piezoelect

Patient-derived cells from surgical resections are of paramount importance to brain tumor research. It is well known that there is cellular and microenvironmental heterogeneity within a single tumor mass. Thus, current established protocols for propagating tumor cells in vitro are limiting because resections obtained from conventional singular samples limit the diversity in cell populations and do not accurately model the heterogeneous tumor. Utilization of discarded tissue obtained from cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA) of the whole tumor mass allows for establishing novel cell li

The so-called ultrasound acupuncture is a therapeutic approach for clinical problems and health care by applying the ultrasound energy to the acupoints of the human body directly or indirectly. It has been applied in clinic for about 30 years since 1980s. In the present paper, the authors review the development of both experimental and clinical researches in the past 30 years. Its clinical application includes allergic rhinitis, local pain, mastitis, angina pectoris of coronary heart disease, stroke, etc. Regarding the researches on the underlying mechanism of ultrasound and ultrasound acupunc

PURPOSE: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a form of mid-frequency ultrasound (0.7-3 MHz) delivered in pulse wave mode (100 and 1000 Hz). LIPUS delivers high-frequency sound waves with low-intensity mechanical energy that can be transmitted to cells and thus tissues, thereby producing biological effects. The regenerative activity of LIPUS in tissues, including the cavernous nerve, has been demonstrated in numerous studies. In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of LIPUS on erectile dysfunction (ED).
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed-MEDLINE

Decades of research and applications have demonstrated that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has a certain therapeutic effect on diseases involving bone remodeling. LIPUS operates in a pulsed-wave mode at low intensity, ensuring efficient transmission of acoustic energy to target tissues, thereby providing non-invasive physical stimulation for therapeutic purposes. Bone remodeling refers to the dynamic renewal process of bone tissue that is jointly completed by multiple cells in the bone metabolic microenvironment. LIPUS influences the basic biological processes of bone remodeling in th

OBJECTIVES: Topically applied macromolecules have the potential to provide vision-saving treatments for many of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. The aim of this study was to determine if ultrasound can be applied to increase transcorneal drug delivery of macromolecules without dangerously overheating surrounding ocular tissues.
METHODS: Dissected corneas of adult rabbits were placed in a diffusion cell between a donor compartment filled with a solution of macromolecules (40, 70 kDa, or 150 kDa) and a receiver compartment. Each cornea was exposed to the drug solution for 6

OBJECTIVES: Low-intensity ultrasound (LIU)/low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) may influence nerve tissue regeneration and axonal changes in the context of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and in the animal model. The purpose of this pragmatic review is to understand the current knowledge for the effects of low-intensity therapeutic ultrasound in the animal and human model and determine the future directions of this novel field.
DESIGN: Pragmatic review.
METHODS: We performed a literature search of available material using OVID, EmBase, and PubMed for LIU/LIPUS, all of which were preclinical

Loading is indispensable for the growth, development, and maintenance of joint tissues, including mandibular condylar cartilage, but excessive loading or reduced host adaptive capacity can considerably damage the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), leading to temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA). TMJ-OA, associated with other pathological conditions and aging processes, is a highly degenerative disease affecting the articular cartilage. Many treatment modalities for TMJ-OA have been developed. Traditional clinical treatment includes mainly nonsurgical options, such as occlusal splints. H

Since the middle of the 20th century and in order to treat neurological diseases, clinicians have proposed the use of ultrasound, instead of skin incision or trepanation, when performing intracranial thermocoagulation. However, focusing ultrasound intracranially with high precision was technically difficult until recent technological developments. Specifically, advancements in ultrasound phased-array transducers have eliminated the need for a craniotomy, and progress in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has allowed the real-time measurement of intracranial temperature. Both of the above have ena
