We studied the value of ultrasound examination combined with conventional clinical evaluation in screening for congenital defects of the hip in a study including more than 3,000 neonates. Splenic metastases were studied by ultrasound in 31 patients. Sixteen (52%) patients had multifocal lesions, 12 (39%) had single metastases and 3 (10%) had diffuse splenic infiltration. Splenomegaly was seen in 6 patients with focal metastases and in all 3 with diffuse infiltration. Ultrasonography of 8 cases of cystic mass in extremities (7 ganglions, 1 popliteal cyst) were reviewed and evaluated. The lesions were demonstrated as round, oval or flattened shaped masses with no echo signal. However, in most cases, there was no sign of posterior echo enhancement, which may be the effect of posterior bony structure. It seemed important to handle probe with adequate palpation, which enables examiner to get further anatomical information.

The position of an undescended testicle is of importance for choice of therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the anatomic positions occupied by undescended testicles could be detected by an objective method. Real-time ultrasonography was performed in 83 patients with 123 undescended testicles. Patient compliance was 97 per cent. Linear array ultrasound techniques were utilized in place of conventional radiologic procedures to study the dynamics of the urethrovesical junction and proximal urethra in patients with urinary incontinence. The acute scrotum remains a difficult clinical challenge because of numerous etiologies including inflammatory processes, testicular torsions, traumas, and tumors that can justify early surgery. Sonography and computed tomography play complementary roles in imaging mass lesions in the salivary glands and their surroundings. Ninety per cent of parotid tumors originate from the superficial lobe, and we consider sonography to be the method of choice for imaging these lesions. The sensitivity of high-resolution sonography in detecting intraparotid tumors approaches 100 per cent, and ultrasound is therefore an excellent method to evaluate patients with parotid swelling. Testicular torsion was evaluated by B-scan ultrasound in one experimental animal and in 12 patients. The clinical findings were categorized as acute, subacute, or chronic depending on the amount of time that had elapsed since the onset of pain (less than 24 hours, 1 to 10 days, and more than 10 days, respectively). Ultrasonography was used to demonstrate retroperitioneal haemorrhages and intramuscular haematoma in three patients with antibodies to factor VIII and one with von Willebrand's disease in whom major bleeding episodes occurred. Endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) and associated needle biopsy is a mini-invasive means to study mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes and tumors. Guidance by real-time ultrasound image allows the biopsy of even small targets with high accuracy. The investigation is well tolerated, highly specific and its main indication is the staging of lung cancer. The method is also suitable for primary diagnosis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy of unknown origin or central tumors.
