A case of localized amyloidosis of the urethra is reported. A 42-year-old man visited with the complaint of urethral discharge and urethral tumor on May 24, 1985. A small fingertip sized, elastic hard mass was present on the left side of the external urethral meatus. Cold cup biopsy of the urethral tumor was done. Histological examination of the tumor showed amorphous eosinophilic tissue staining. Green birefringence indicating amyloidosis by Congo red staining was observed under polarized light microscope. Since the patient's symptoms were minimal, no specific therapy was instituted.

Abdominal transposition of the female urethra, a rational choice for the surgical treatment of reflex neurogenic incontinence, has been used infrequently to date. We present a case to illustrate the steps in the surgical technique of transposition, emphasizing the principles we believe necessary to create a continent urethrovesical valve. If proper attention is given to surgical details the patient can achieve continence and require intermittent self-catheterization only.

A case of carcinoma originating in a diverticulum of the urethra in a female patient is presented. A review of 143 cases of carcinoma of the female urethra treated from 1948 to 1984 at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at Houston disclosed 6 additional patients with diverticular carcinoma. This report of the sonographic appearance of the normal adult female urethra includes discussion of the anatomy and four representative cases. Six sonograms are shown that demonstrate normal urethras in both sagittal and transverse sections of pregnant and nonpregnant women. This anatomy is easily demonstrated with a sonographic B scanner. Insufficient knowledge of the sonographic appearance of the normal female urethra may lead to the erroneous diagnosis of a urinary bladder tumor.

A case of female urethral diverticulum is reported by the authors. It is a rare disease and about 31 cases have previously been described. An analysis is made in relation to the diverticulum of the urethra and to female urethral carcinoma. Emphasis is given on the semiology and the recently acquired diagnostic procedures, as these have led to an increased number of recognized cases. In the case presented, an extended resection and a definitive urinary derivation was performed, together with chemo- and radiotherapy. A follow-up of 2.5 years showed no signs of recurrence or metastases.
