COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and missed vaccine rollout targets: The case for using general practitioners.

The South African (SA) government's roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine is behind its target, largely owing to concerns about the sideeffects and the effectiveness of the vaccines, and because they have been developed over a very short time frame. Another factor is a lack of trust in government policies regarding COVID-19 and its running of public health. One survey has indicated that for persons seeking a vaccination, the preferred vaccine site would be general practitioners (GPs). GPs have been used in Australia, the UK and elsewhere. In Australia, with a scattered rural population, 5 600 GPs h

Vaccine hesitancy and the resurgence of vaccine preventable diseases: the way forward for Malaysia, a Southeast Asian country.

This study engaged health professionals in in-depth, semi-structured interviews to explore their opinions concerning the issues surrounding vaccine hesitancy in Malaysia and strategies to improve vaccination to stamp the rise of vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs). Opinions on how to address the resurgence of VPDs in the era of increasing vaccine hesitancy were obtained. Eight health professionals, including geriatricians, pediatricians, microbiologists, public health specialists, and family medicine specialists were interviewed. The influence of anti-vaccination propaganda, past-experience of

Understanding the perceived logic of care by vaccine-hesitant and vaccine-refusing parents: A qualitative study in Australia.

In terms of public health, childhood vaccination programs have benefits that far outweigh risks. However, some parents decide not to vaccinate their children. This paper explores the ways in which such parents talked about the perceived risks and benefits incurred by vaccinating (or not vaccinating) their children. Between 2013-2016 we undertook 29 in-depth interviews with non-vaccinating and/or 'vaccine hesitant' parents in Australia. Interviews were conducted in an open and non-judgmental manner, akin to empathic neutrality. Interviews focused on parents talking about the factors that shaped

[Vaccine hesitancy and One Health : towards a more integrated approach to rethinking vaccination in public health].

In a context characterised by the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases, as well as the anticipated recurrence of health crises, vaccination remains a cornerstone of preventive public health. However, its effectiveness continues to be undermined by vaccine hesitancy, a multifaceted phenomenon shaped by a wide range of determinants. This situation underscores the need to design and implement more integrated vaccination strategies that extend beyond a strictly biomedical approach. The operational principles of the One Health approach, which emphasise intersectoral and interdisciplina

Vaccine hesitancy about the HPV vaccine among French young women and their parents: a telephone survey.

BACKGROUND: The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine reduces the burden of cervical and other cancers. In numerous countries, a slow uptakeof this vaccine persists, calling for a better understanding of the structural factors leading to vaccine acceptation. We aimed to assess the attitudes toward HPV vaccination among its intended public to explore its specific characteristics. METHODS: A random cross-sectional telephone survey of the French general population provided data from a sample of 2426 respondents of the target public: the parents of young women and the young women aged 15-25 themselv

Older adults' vaccine hesitancy: Psychosocial factors associated with influenza, pneumococcal, and shingles vaccine uptake.

Influenza, pneumococcal disease, and shingles (herpes zoster) are more prevalent in older people. These illnesses are preventable via vaccination, but uptake is low and decreasing. Little research has focused on understanding the psychosocial reasons behind older adults' hesitancy towards different vaccines. A cross-sectional survey with 372 UK-based adults aged 65-92 years (M = 70.5) assessed awareness and uptake of the influenza, pneumococcal, and shingles vaccines. Participants provided health and socio-demographic data and completed two scales measuring the psychosocial factors associated

Household and Community Clustering of Concurrent Vaccine Hesitancy in China: Multicenter Survey.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy remains a persistent global challenge, especially in the context of major public health emergencies. While individual-level factors have been widely studied, whether and how household and community contexts shape hesitancy clustering has received little attention. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess household- and community-level clustering of COVID-19 booster vaccine hesitancy (CBVH), identify key associated factors, and explore potential intervention targets. METHODS: In March 2023, a household-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among Chinese adults

Vaccine hesitancy in Brazil: post-pandemic challenges and the use of artificial intelligence.

Vaccine hesitancy is a global public health challenge, and its characteristics change according to the social and epidemiological context. This commentary seeks to stimulate debate on the dynamic nature of the definition and determinants of vaccine hesitancy, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and the population's increased access to new forms of information-seeking, such as artificial intelligence. Scientific production on childhood vaccine hesitancy in Brazil before 2016 was focused on high-income families. After 2016, there was an increase in production on vaccine hesitancy, co

A cross-sectional study of the predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Pakistan.

Vaccine hesitancy, where individuals are reluctant to get vaccinated, is a significant issue, especially in the event of a pandemic, and poses a major concern. We explore a few predictors of vaccine hesitancy in Pakistan using a cross-sectional study. For this purpose, 562 respondents registered their responses through an online questionnaire from March 31, 2021, to May 28, 2021, during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cronbach's Alpha was used for Internal Consistency Reliability, while Factor Analysis was used for Construct Validity. We applied bivariate linear regression analysis fo

Provider perspectives on HPV vaccine hesitancy in the post-COVID-19 era.

While HPV vaccination is effective in prevention of many HPV-associated cancers, only 61.4% of US adolescents were up to date on their HPV vaccinations in 2023. In the period following the COVID-19 pandemic, a decrease in vaccine uptake was reported, along with a rise in vaccine hesitancy. This study aimed to understand these changes to HPV vaccination and vaccine hesitancy that occurred following the COVID-19 pandemic from providers' perspectives. We conducted 1-hour interviews with 12 participants over video calls that were then de-identified and transcribed. Eleven out of 12 providers notic

Vaccine practices, literacy, and hesitancy among parents in the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Immunisation is one of public health's greatest success stories, yet, annually, 20 million children miss out entirely or partially on routine immunisation. National immunisation estimates have the United Arab Emirates (UAE) lagging behind with 4% of children under the age of 1 not having received any vaccines. Vaccine hesitancy is considered one of the biggest barriers to vaccination. This study aims to evaluate the UAE's parents' vaccination attitudes and practices as well as estimate vaccine hesitancy's prevalence and determinants. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional, descriptive

Information processing style and institutional trust as factors of COVID vaccine hesitancy.

This study investigates the factors contributing to COVID vaccine hesitancy. Vaccine hesitancy has commonly been attributed to susceptibility to misinformation and linked to particular socio-demographic factors and personality traits. We present a new perspective, emphasizing the interplay between individual cognitive styles and perceptions of public health institutions. In January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic, 318 participants underwent a comprehensive assessment, including self-report measures of personality and clinical characteristics, as well as a behavioral task that assessed infor
