[Frequency of Gardnerella vaginalis vaginosis and its association with other pathogens causing genital infections in the female].

In order to determine the presence of unspecific vaginosis and their causes, 700 vaginal smears were obtained from patients assisting to the Clinical Laboratory of the Familiar Medicine Unit No. 28 "Gabriel Mancera" of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, during 6 months. The patients age was from 18 to 55 years old. To establish the infectious etiology of these pathologies the vaginal smears were observed freshly and stained by Gram's method. Specific test for differentiate Gardnerella vaginalis and Candida albicans were also performed. From 700 vaginal smears, 160 were positive to Candi…

[The role of phase contrast microscopy in the evaluation of cervix neck and vaginal biocenosis].

The aim of our study was to evaluate and compare the possibility of germ identification in cervico-vaginal infections of different origin by Ph cytology and classic fixated and stained (H-E) smears. We identified Lactobacillus vag., Gardnerella vag., short bacilli (Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella), mixed Coccus flora (diplococci, small and large cocci), Trichomonas vag., and Candidia alb. in cervico-vaginal smears. In endocervical, mature metaplastic or parabasal cells the elementary and cocoid bodies of Chlamydia trachomatis were possible to observed. The cytopathic effects caused by vi…

Infectious hepatitis E virus excreted into the vagina.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) persists in the male genital tract that associates with infertility. However, the presence of HEV in the female genital tract is unreported. Vaginal secretions, cervical smears, and cervix uteri were collected to explore the presence of HEV in the female genital tract. HEV RNA and/or antigens were detected in the vaginal secretions, cervical smears, and the cervix uteri of women. The infectivity of HEV excreted into vaginal secretions was further validated in vitro. In addition, HEV replicates in the female genital tract were identified in HEV-infected animal models by

Cytologic detection of Enterobius vermicularis and Strongyloides stercoralis in routine cervicovaginal smears and urocytograms.

Four cases of Enterobius vermicularis infection and one case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection were found during the examination of 22,700 routine Papanicolaou-stained cervicovaginal smears and 434 urinary sediments. Ova of E. vermicularis were observed in the urocytograms from three girls and in the vaginal smear of a young woman. In a second woman, a S. stercoralis larva was detected in the routine vaginal smear. A clear background or a mild inflammatory pattern was noted in the smears in these cases.

[Local combined therapy of vaginal infections by nifuratel-nistatin].

A test included 40 women in the reproductive age with clinical symptoms of vaginitis and microbiological examination. They were treated by combined therapy of vaginal tablets of nifuratel, 500 mg and nistatin 200 000 i. u. during six days, after which they underwent gynaecological reexamination and repeated microbiological examination of vaginal and cervical smears. An analiysis of vaginal secretion found bacterial flora in 34 smears (65%), fungus (Candida albicans) in 15 (24%) and Trichomonas vaginalis in 7 (11%). Local vaginal therapy in vaginitis caused by Trichomonas vaginalis was successf

Abnormal cervicovaginal cytology, unsatisfactory colposcopy and the use of vaginal estrogen cream: an observational study of clinical outcomes for women in low estrogen states.

AIM: To determine the effectiveness of vaginal estrogen cream to improve the rate of satisfactory colposcopy and subsequent smear result in patients in a hypoestrogenic state and an abnormal Papanicolaou smear. To delineate between abnormal smears secondary to atrophy and inflammation from preneoplastic change and suggest an effective treatment strategy to deal with this challenging situation. METHODS: Patients with abnormal cervicovaginal smears who were in a low estrogen state (postmenopausal or amenorrheic postnatal) undergoing colposcopy were identified. All patients had an unsatisfactory…

Use of an immunoenzymatic assay to detect the luteinizing hormone peak in bitches.

The success of artificial insemination with fresh chilled or frozen semen depends on the time of insemination. Determination of oestrous behaviour, use of vaginal smears or measurement of the vaginal resistivity are unreliable techniques and interpretation of the dosages of progesterone may be critical as it may vary from one laboratory to another. The plasma concentration of LH displays a peak of secretion that can be a good reference to date the events of the ovarian cycle. The plasma concentration of LH was measured in ten bitches by a new sandwich immunoenzymatic assay (Reprokit, Sanofi) a…

Prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus in women with abnormal and normal vaginal ThinPrep Papanicolaou cytology.

OBJECTIVE: The significance of high-risk HPV (hrHPV) testing in the management of women with abnormal cervical Pap tests is well known. However, the data about the hrHPV detection and its significance in abnormal vaginal specimens are very limited. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of hrHPV in women with abnormal vaginal smears. METHODS: Our Copath database system was searched to retrieve all the vaginal Pap tests with adjunctive HC2 hrHPV DNA test performed between July 1, 2005, and July 30, 2009. The results of hrHPV were reviewed in different TBS 2001 categories, in di…

Trichomonas vaginalis antigens in vaginal and urine specimens by immunochromatography, compared to culture and microscopy.

This study evaluated the immunochromatographic (IC) capillary flow technology for detection of T. vaginalis antigens in vaginal and urine specimens. The IC antigen-detection test and microscopy wet smears were assessed against the InPouch TV culture. Vaginal-swabs and first-voided urine specimens were obtained from 348 sexually active symptomatic or asymptomatic, > or =16 years old women. Nineteen samples (5%) were positive by culture (95%, CI 0.3-0.8). The IC test (vaginal-specimens) was more sensitive than the wet smears. IC sensitivity was 84% (95%CI, 0.68-1.01), specificity 98% (95%CI, 0.9

Inflammation on the cervical Papanicolaou smear: the predictive value for infection in asymptomatic women.

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of inflammation on the cervical Papanicolaou (Pap) smear of asymptomatic women is unknown. This study assessed the possible association between inflammation on Pap smears with the presence of cervical/vaginal pathogens. METHODS: A questionnaire was given to 290 asymptomatic women seen for routine gynecologic examination, including Pap smear, in a primary care setting. The women were tested for the presence of Candida species, Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis, Neisseria gonnorrhoeae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. RESULTS: Recovery of Chlamydia an

Analysis of lifestyle data and cytologic findings in a pilot cervical screening project in rural Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the possibilities of a cervical cytology screening program and the importance of lifestyle parameters in women living in rural Vietnam. STUDY DESIGN: Screening took place in Quangninh province in the north of Vietnam. From 700 women screened for the first time, smears were prepared and read by a cytotechnologist. The number of children and abortions (some women having had 10 abortions) allowed us to study the relationship of these life-style parameters with disturbed vaginal ecology (defined as the presence of Candida, trichomonads or cocci in the smear). RESULTS: The

Diagnosing human papillomavirus of the female lower genital tract: failure of the Pap smear as a sole screening test.

Of 197 patients referred for colposcopy who underwent repeat Pap smears and colposcopic biopsies (when indicated), histologic evidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection involving the endocervix, cervix, or vagina or all three sites was documented in 109 biopsies. Sixty-six (61%) had normal Pap smears at the time of colposcopy. Despite a specificity of 92% for detecting HPV, the Pap smear demonstrated a low sensitivity (39%), with a positive and negative predictive test value of 88% and 50%, respectively. In patients with biopsies revealing HPV infection without associated dysplasia, fals

Use of exfoliative cytology for diagnosis of transmissible venereal tumour and controlling the recovery period in the bitch.

Transmissible venereal tumour (TVT) is a rare vaginal tumour that can be treated surgically or cryosurgically as well as by radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Vincristine has been found to be very effective for treating TVT. Since vaginal secretion or discharge may contain neoplastic cells, the cytological identification of TVT cells is possible. The present study was carried out in 12 bitches. Vaginal smears were obtained with cotton swab from the anterior vagina and TVT suspected structures. The smears were stained according to Papanicolaou and assessed by light microscopy. Additionally the gener…

Evaluation of cervical smears at King Hussein Medical Centre, Jordan, over three and a half years.

Cervical smears taken from women referred for a check-up or with vaginal itching/discharge over a period of 3.5 years were reviewed at the King Hussein Medical Centre, Jordan. All smears were fixed with 96% alcohol, stained with Papanicolaou stain and screened microscopically. Of the smears from 1176 women aged 18-70 years, 4.5% were classified as inadequate, 7.7% were normal and 79.9% showed non-specific inflammation. Abnormal vaginal flora was found in 4.8% of cases, Candida albicans in 1.2%, Trichomonas vaginalis in 0.9% and actinomycosis in 1 case. Dysphasic changes were rare: 9 cases (0.8
