Proprioceptive consequences of tendon vibration during movement.

1. Previous studies have used tendon vibration to investigate kinesthetic illusions in the isometric limb and end point control in the moving limb. These previous studies have shown that vibration distorts the perceptions of static joint angle and movement and causes systematic errors in the end point of movement. In this paper we describe the effects of tendon vibration during movement while human subjects performed a proprioceptively coordinated motor task. In an earlier study we showed that the CNS coordinates this motor task-a movement sequence-with proprioceptive information related to th…

Vibration perception thresholds in 279 diabetic patients.

Generalised peripheral neuropathy is a well recognised complication of diabetes mellitus and early detection is important in order that morbidity can be reduced by interventional therapy at an early stage. Since nerve conduction studies are not a feasible option in a busy diabetic clinic, an alternative technique of detection, superior to clinical examination, is beneficial. In this study vibration perception thresholds were measured in 279 diabetic outpatients. Seventy-eight patients (28%) had abnormal results but only 35 (13%) had clinical evidence of neuropathy. While nerve conduction studi…

[Vibration-induced nystagmus: mechanism and clinical interest].

UNLABELLED: In 1973 Lücke described nystagmus induced by application of a vibrator on the mastoid process. Since that time, several Authors have applied the vibrator test in normal subjects or patients suffering from various well-characterized conditions. OBJECTIVE: Recognizing that results obtained with the vibrator test are sometimes in contradiction with those of other vestibular tests, our aim was to formulate an assumption regarding the genesis of induced nystagmus in an attempt to explain such contradictions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We considered seven very different clinical situations.

Diagnostic aspects of vibration-induced white finger.

Vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is a secondary type of Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) caused by exposure to hand-arm vibration. The present review concerns the cold-provoked attack of RP in vasospastic VWF. It concentrates on the most common clinical and laboratory methods used to diagnose RP in vibration-exposed subjects. Some physiological aspects of the attack of RP are mentioned to elucidate the diagnostic principles of the tests. Anamnestic diagnostics by medical interviews and questionnaires as well as cold-provocation tests with detection of finger colour, finger systolic blood pressure…

[Vibration syndrome and occupational exposure in Poland].

The objective of the study was to analyse the data on the exposure to vibration, and the incidence of vibration syndrome in individual branches of the national economy and voivodships. The data were obtained from the records of The Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine in Lódź, containing reports submitted to the Institute every three years, and the literature on fragmentary analyses of this kind of exposure. Although, the number of persons exposed to vibration, and the incidence of occupational diseases induced by vibration have decreased, the material collected provide evidence that vibra…

Spinal cord stimulation in vibration white finger.

The authors report a case of vibration white finger syndrome in a 51-year old male, pneumatic drill worker. The patient complained of severe pain in the I, II, III and IV right fingers related to acral ischemic lesions. Dried skin with desquamation, tingling, paraesthesia and loss of sensation were present in both hands. Several arterial obstructions on forearm, hand and fingers were evident bilaterally at the angiography. Medical treatment, including administration of calcium-channel blockers, pentoxifylline and intravenous prostaglandin therapy, was unsuccessful. Under local anaesthesia an e…

Vibration stress and the autonomic nervous system.

Raynaud's phenomenon has been considered to be due to activation of the central sympathetic vasoconstrictor reflex, and may represent part of a larger dysfunction of higher autonomic centers. Symptoms, such as sweating disturbances, orthostatic hypotension, insomnia and impotence have been reported to be more common among vibration exposed workers. We studied 217 male forest workers and selected samples of this population for electromyographic (N = 80), autonomic nervous system function, controlled breathing, tilting bed and valsalva manoeuvre (N = 88) tests, and a full clinical neurological e…

[The influence of infrasound vibration upon cochlea].

White guinea pigs were exposed to sound (White noise, 100 dB. SPL. or 4 kHz. pure tone 115 dB. SPL. 2 hours) and infrasound (Frequency 10 Hz. amplitude 5mm, 4 or 6 hours), independently or simultaneously to study the influence of infrasound vibration upon the cochlea. After the exposure, amplitude and latency time of the AP of the electrocochleogram was studied by inserting a needle into the cochlea under intraperitoneal anesthesia. The electrocochleogram was obtained by averaging response to 256 clicks at a rate of 8 per second. The results showed that the amplitude of the AP significantly de…

The multi-axis vibration environment and man.

Many investigations into the effects of vibration on man have been performed since Mallock's first study of London Underground vibrations in 1902. The vibration research has tended to be confined to the vertical (heave) axis, yet recent experiments have indicated that low frequency vibration along the lateral (sway) axis has a greater adverse effect upon comfort and performance. Measurements of the vibration environments in current forms of transport including motor vehicles, hovercraft and aircraft etc have shown that appreciable quantities of vibration along all three axes exist. Further vib…

Relation of haemostatic function, neurovascular impairment, and vibration exposure in workers with different stages of vibration induced white finger.

Haemostatic function and neurovascular symptoms were investigated in 67 workers exposed to vibration and 46 comparable referents. Of these 65.6% of vibration workers complained of neurological disturbances (stages 0T, 0N of Taylor's classification for vibration induced white finger (VWF) and 20.9% suffered from Raynaud's phenomenon (stages 1-2-3). The severity of the staging symptoms showed a close relation with an index of vibration dose computed on the basis of vibration measurement and individual exposure time. Indices of platelet aggregation, both in vitro and in vivo, antithrombin III, fi…

The effects of local vibration inducing a tonic vibration reflex or movement illusion on acute modulations of corticospinal excitability.

Stimulation of muscle afferents by local vibration (LV) can lead to two distinct perceptual and motor responses: the tonic vibration reflex (TVR) or the movement illusion. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TVR and movement illusion on corticospinal excitability. In two experiments, EMG activity of the vibrated flexor carpi radialis (FCR) muscle (80 Hz, 6 min) and the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) muscle were recorded. Illusion was assessed using questionnaires. LV conditions were adjusted to favour either TVR (visual attention focused on the vibrating wrist) or ILLUSION (hidden hand, …
