Rheumatic fever appeared to decline in the United States in the 1970s and early 1980s. In the last two years, however, there have been multiple reports of the resurgence of rheumatic fever. Two of these reports originated in states that border West Virginia. This study demonstrates that there has been a similar outbreak in the southern part of West Virginia in 1988. In addition, it appears that the incidence of first-attack heart damage is high, and that physicians should maintain their vigilance in diagnosing and treating acute rheumatic fever.

In October 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was notified of a cluster of Legionnaires' disease cases in workers at a racetrack facility. BACKGROUND: The objective is to analyze and compare Virginia suicide data from 2003 to 2012 to US suicide data.
METHODS: Suicide trends by method, age, gender, and race were obtained from Virginia's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner's annual reports.
RESULTS: Similar to US suicide rates, suicide rates in Virginia increased between 2003 and 2012 from 10.9/100,000 people to 12.9/100,000 people.
