Case Report: Three-dimensional printed prosthesis reconstruction for patello-femoral large osteochondral defects in a patient with distal femoral giant cell tumour: A case report.

Background: The restoration and reconstruction of patello-femoral large osteochondral defects caused by bone tumours are challenging because of the local recurrence rate and the joint's mechanical complexity. Although three-dimensional (3D)-printed prostheses are commonly adopted for tumour-induced bone defect reconstruction, patello-femoral osteochondral reconstruction with 3D-printed prostheses is rarely reported. Case presentation: A 44-year-old female patient with progressive swelling and pain in the left knee for 6 months was diagnosed with Campanacci Grade II giant cell tumour (GCT). She

A survey of prosthetic eye wearers to investigate mucoid discharge.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to better understand the causes and treatments of mucoid discharge associated with prosthetic eye wear by reviewing the literature and surveying anophthalmic patients. METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was completed by 429 prosthetic eye wearers who used visual analog scales to self-measure their discharge experience for four discharge characteristics: frequency, color, volume, and viscosity. These characteristics were analyzed with age, ethnicity, years wearing a prosthesis, eye loss cause, removal and cleaning regimes, hand-washing behavior, age of current pro

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation in a patient with severe aortic insufficiency and minimal aortic annular calcification.

Severe aortic insufficiency with minimal aortic annular calcification has been considered a relative contraindication to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) because of a lack of calcium for fluoroscopic visualization and radial stent fixation. We report a patient with severe aortic insufficiency after previous coronary artery bypass and aortic valve repair who underwent successful TAVI. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography was critical to guide valve implantation and previous surgical pledgets were used to seat an oversized TAVI prosthesis within the aortic annulus. In fo

Response of Charité total disc replacement under physiologic loads: prosthesis component motion patterns.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Total disc replacement (TDR) has been recommended to reduce pain of presumed discogenic origin while preserving spinal motion. The floating core of Charité TDR is professed to allow the replication of the kinematics of a healthy disc under physiologic loads. While segmental motion after Charité TDR has been measured, little is known about the effects of a physiologic compressive preload on vertebral motion and the motion of prosthesis components after TDR. PURPOSE: (1) Does Charité TDR allow restoration of normal load-displacement behavior of a lumbar motion segment under

Maximizing the fidelity of a photovoltaic subretinal prosthesis for human patients.

Objective.PRIMA subretinal implants provide prosthetic vision to patients blinded by age-related macular degeneration, with acuity closely matching the sampling limit of the pixel pitch: a single 100 μm pixel per line of a letter corresponds to 20/420 acuity. Decreasing the pixel size in the same flat geometry is difficult due to the constrained electric field, especially considering a 40 μm thick debris layer separating the implant from the target neurons. Here we optimize the electrode design to help overcome such limitations.Approach.An end-to-end modeling pipeline combines the retinal phot

Disc replacement using Pro-Disc C versus fusion: a prospective randomised and controlled radiographic and clinical study.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) may be considered to be the gold standard for treatment of symptomatic degenerative disc disease within the cervical spine. However, fusion of the segment may result in progressive degeneration of the adjacent segments. Therefore, dynamic stabilization procedures have been introduced. Among these, artificial disc replacement by disc prosthesis seems to be promising. However, to be so, segmental motion must be preserved. This, again, is very difficult to judge and has not yet been proven. The aim of the current study was to first analyse the segmen

Prosthetic replacement for coronoid deficiency: report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: Persistent elbow instability associated with coronoid deficiency is a difficult condition to treat. Several surgical techniques have been described for coronoid reconstruction, but the resulting outcomes have been unpredictable. We hypothesized that a coronoid prosthesis could restore elbow stability. METHODS: A nonanatomically shaped metallic coronoid prosthesis was custom designed for each of 3 patients. Each had a chronic fracture-subluxation with persistent instability, deficiencies of the coronoid, and compromise of the radial head. Each patient had undergone 2 to 4 prior fai

How I do it: modified lichtenberger-brown tracheoesophageal puncture procedure.

BACKGROUND: Tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) with use of a prosthesis is nowadays a standard for voice restoration after laryngectomy. Different TEP approaches exist. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed our series of patients who underwent TEP by a novel technique, based partially on the Lichtenberger endo-extralaryngeal needle carrier. The instrument is covered with a protective Nelaton catheter and introduced via the mouth to the neopharynx/esophagus. No rigid endoscope is used for visualization of the TEP site. The tip is palpated through the stoma at the posterior tracheal wall and incis

The Argus(®) II Retinal Prosthesis System.

The Argus(®) II Retinal Prosthesis System (Second Sight Medical Products) is the first prosthetic vision device to obtain regulatory approval in both Europe and the USA. As such it has entered the commercial market as a treatment for patients with profound vision loss from end-stage outer retinal disease, predominantly retinitis pigmentosa. To date, over 100 devices have been implanted worldwide, representing the largest group of patients currently treated with visual prostheses. The system works by direct stimulation of the relatively preserved inner retina via epiretinal microelectrodes, the

Corporoscopic excavation of the fibrosed corpora cavernosa for penile prosethesis implantation: optical corporotomy and trans-corporeal resection, Shaeer's technique.

INTRODUCTION: Implantation of a penile prosthesis in cases of neglected or resistant ischemic priapism, or delayed re-implantation following prosthesis infection and extraction, is usually a difficult and risky procedure due to fibrosis of the corpora cavernosa. Among the common complications are perforation of the urethra, tunica albuginea, and infection. The complications are usually due to the use of blind force against resistance. AIM: We propose the techniques of Trans-Corporeal Resection and Optical Corporotomy as adjuvant measures for excavating the fibrosed corpora cavernosa under vis

[Use of keratoprosthesis type "champagne cork"--case report].

Kerathoprosthesis application is limited to strictly definite indications such as: after a severe corneal scald, after repeated graft rejections or temporarily just before the intricate eye operation to expose the posterior segment. Considerable progress in this province has been observed since PMMA were introduced. Recently a new successful method of "champagne cork" kerathoprosthesis, described firstly by Worst, has been reported. It is designed as a reverse cone and in comparison with other models provides significantly wider range of vision and simultaneuosly better visibility of fundus, w
