A micronutrient supplement modulates homocysteine levels regardless of vitamin B biostatus in elderly subjects.

Elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels (≥15 μmol/L) in the elderly are frequently associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. Several studies have already shown an Hcy-lowering effect of B vitamin supplementation in cohorts deficient in these nutrients. The aim of this randomized, double-blinded 12-week intervention study was to investigate whether Hcy levels in healthy elderly subjects (75.4±4.5 years, n=133) could be lowered with a micronutrient supplement (i.e., 400 μg folic acid, 100 μg cobalamin). Difference in mean initial Hcy levels between intervention (1

Vitamin B12 Deficiency: A Rare Cause of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness.

NONE: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is one of the leading reasons that patients present to sleep clinics. Approximately 10% to 14% of the adults report that excessive sleepiness interferes with their daily lives. Common causes of EDS include obstructive sleep apnea, sleep deprivation, circadian rhythm disorders, medication effects, psychiatric conditions especially depression, and primary hypersomnia such as narcolepsy or central idiopathic hypersomnia. Vitamin B12 deficiency is a rare cause of EDS. We are presenting a case of severe vitamin B12 deficiency as an unusual and rare cause of

Association of some specific nutrient deficiencies with periodontal disease in elderly people: A systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Deficiency of vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium has been associated with periodontal disease. This article systematically reviews the currently available literature on the feasible association of vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium deficiencies with periodontal disease in elderly people. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of relevant English- and Dutch-language medical literature published from January 1990 to May 2007, with critical appraisal of those studies evaluating the association of vitamin B complex, vitamin C…

Oral or intramuscular vitamin B12?

Vitamin B(12) deficiency is common, becoming more so with age, and estimates of its population prevalence have ranged from 1.5% to 15%. If untreated, it can lead to megaloblastic anaemia and irreversible neurological complications. In the UK, the usual treatment is regular intramuscular injections of hydroxocobalamin. High-dose oral vitamin B(12) replacement is standard practice in some other countries and less costly. Here we review issues around adopting an oral vitamin B(12) replacement regimen more widely in the UK.

Effects of B vitamin deletion in chemically defined diets on brood development in Camponotus vicinus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

The potential contributions of B vitamins by a yeast associate to the nutrition of the carpenter ant Camponotus vicinus Mayr was examined as part of an effort to develop a chemically defined diet. This diet was used to test the effects of individual B vitamin and other nutrient deletions on larval development. The chemically defined diet contained amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and other growth factors in a liquid sucrose matrix. C. vicinus worker colonies with third- and fourth-instar larvae were fed a complete artificial diet or that diet with a component deleted for a 12-wk period. There

Comparison of sublingual vs. intramuscular administration of vitamin B12 for the treatment of patients with vitamin B12 deficiency.

There are several methods to treat vitamin B12 deficiency (VB12d): intramuscular (IM), oral, sublingual (SL), and intranasal vitamin B12 (VB12) preparations. Large studies comparing the efficacy of SL vs. IM supplements are lacking. The aim of the present study was to compare the efficacy of SL versus the standard IM administration of VB12 in restoring B12 levels. This was a retrospective analysis of data from the computerized pharmacy records of Maccabi Health Service (MHS). Data were recorded for all patients older than 18 years of age who were prescribed VB12 during January 2014-December 20

The relationship between homocysteine level and vitamins B12, B9 and B6 status in patients with chronic kidney disease.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: According to present knowledge, hyperhomocysteinemia is one of the risk factors of cardio-vascular pathology. Patients with chronic kidney disease are known to develop hyperhomocysteinemia more often than those in general population. Іmportant cause of hyperhomocysteinemia is the deficiency of vitamins В6, В9 and В12 that are involved in homocysteine metabolism. Vitamins deficiency, we believe, can be one of the causes of hyperhomocysteinemia in the patients with chronic renal failure. The aim: To analyze the plasma homocysteine level in patients with chronic kidney di

The role of B vitamins in stroke prevention.

Elevated plasma levels of homocysteine (Hcy) are a recognized risk factor for stroke. This relationship represents one aspect of the debated `Hcy hypothesis'. Elevated Hcy may be an independent and treatable cause of atherosclerosis and thrombotic vascular diseases. Further observations indicate that proper dietary supplementation with B-vitamins decreases total plasma Hcy concentrations and may be an effective intervention for stroke prevention. Metabolic vitamin B12 deficiency is a nutritional determinant of total Hcy and stroke risk. Genetic factors may link B vitamins with stroke severity
