The Quality of Life Burden Associated With Voice Disorders in Sjögren's Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined quality of life burden of voice disorders in Sjögren's syndrome (SS). METHODS: Patients with SS (n = 101) completed interviews involving patient-reported histories of voice disorders, specific voice symptoms, SS disease severity, the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL), and the general health-related quality of life Short Form 36 (SF-36) questionnaires. Relationships among voice symptoms, disease severity, and quality-of-life measures were examined and compared with patient-reported voice disorders. RESULTS: Significant correlations were observed among voic

Voice- and swallow-related quality of life in idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: This study explores whether changes in voice- and swallow-related QoL are associated with progression of idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD). Furthermore, it examines the relationship between patients' perception of both voice and swallowing disorders in IPD. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study, quality of life (QoL). METHODS: One-hundred mentally competent IPD patients with voice and swallowing complaints were asked to answer four QoL questionnaires (Voice Handicap Index, MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory, Visual Analog Scale [VAS] voice, and Dysphagia Severity Sc

Adaptation and Validation of the Voice-Related Quality of Life Measure Into Polish.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to translate and adapt the original V-RQOL (Voice-Related Quality of Life) instrument into Polish and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the V-RQOL Measure such as internal consistency, reliability, and construct validity in different groups of dysphonic patients. METHODS: A total of 214 patients with voice disorders were assessed using the V-RQOL Measure, the Voice Handicap Index, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life, short version. RESULTS: The Polish version of the V-RQOL Measure showed strong internal con

Voice related quality of life in pediatric patients with a history of prematurity.

OBJECTIVE: To determine incidence of dysphonia in patients with history of prematurity and evaluate the correlation between dysphonia and ri … NS: The data suggest that prolonged intubation is associated with poorer long term parent-perceived voice quality in premature patients. Further study is required to correlate parent perceptions with objective vocal quality data and physical findings of vocal pathology. These data may increase the clinician's suspicion for and evaluation of dysphonia in this po …

Quality of the voice after injection of hyaluronic acid into the vocal fold.

BACKGROUND: Voice disorders resulting from glottic insufficiency are a significant clinical problem in everyday phoniatric practice. One method of treatment is injection laryngoplasty. Our study aimed to assess the voice quality of patients treated with hyaluronic acid injection into the vocal fold. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 25 patients suffering from dysphonia, conducting laryngological and phoniatric examination, including videostroboscopy and acoustic voice analysis, before the operation and 1, 3, and 6 months later. RESULTS: In all cases there was complete or almost complete glott…

An acoustical analysis of the effects of maxillary sinus augmentation on voice quality.

OBJECTIVE: Increased experience in sinus lifting procedures has led to a number of literature reports, but the potential effects of sinus lifting on voice quality is not clearly addressed in clinical studies. The aim of this study was to objectively investigate the effects of sinus lifting on alterations in voice quality and, in particular, on vocal resonance. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 17 patients who were in need of bilateral sinus augmentation were recruited. Acoustic analyses were performed before and after surgery. Volume changes in the sinuses were recorded before and after surgery using …

Voice-related quality of life in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disorder, which occurs in about one in 3000-4000 people. Its hallmark features include multiple café-au-lait spots and neurofibromas. Voice characteristics of NF1 patients have been documented using both subjective and objective evaluations. However, the relative impact of these voice characteristics on daily activities has, as far as we know, not been examined yet. METHODS: Thirty adults with NF1 were asked to complete the Flemish Dutch version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Additionally, the level of sever

Perceptual distances of breathy voice quality: a comparison of psychophysical methods.

Experiments to study voice quality have typically used rating scales or direct magnitude estimation to obtain listener judgments. Unfortunately, the data obtained using these tasks are context dependent, which makes it difficult to compare perceptual judgments of voice quality across experiments. The present experiment describes a simple matching task to quantify voice quality. The data obtained through this task were compared to perceptual judgments obtained using rating scale and direct magnitude estimation tasks to determine whether the three tasks provide equivalent perceptual distances ac…

DESIGN: Prospective reliability/validity assessment of voice ratings in dysphonic patients. SETTING: The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Primary Care Trust. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-five adult dysphonia patients recruited from ENT referrals to a speech and language therapy department. Quality analysis of laryngography in a busy hospital ENT voice clinic.

The Portable Laryngograph provides a non-acoustic plot of wet mucosal contact at the glottis over the vocal fold vibrational cycle called the Lx waveform in Laryngograph terminology. Although well-equipped clinics gain most ENT requirements for investigation from the video endoscope, the nature of stroboscopy prevents the investigation over single glottal periods and many transitory problems may be missed. A high-quality Lx signal waveform will reflect any irregularities in mucosal contact and substantially complements the endoscopy examination. Yield, however, is a problem in the environment

[Effects of surgical therapy of obstructive snoring on swallowing and voice quality].

The efficacy of uvulopharyngopalatoplasty (UPPP) in treating obstructive snoring has been reported from many centers. The reduction of uvula and soft palate may result in palatal incompetence. We examined 23 patients undergoing UPPP pre- and postoperatively and found a slight preoperative hypernasality in three patients. None of our patients had problems with swallowing. During the first week postoperatively, most of the patient had hypernasality and noted a nasal escape of liquids. Three to four months after surgery, three patients still had problems swallowing. All 21 patients seen during th

Predicting voice quality of deaf speakers on the basis of glottal characteristics.

Twenty profoundly deaf and 5 normal-hearing subjects produced 225 sustained vowels/a, i, u/at different pitch levels and 75 phonetically balanced sentences, while vocal fold vibration was recorded through an electrolaryngograph (ELG). The utterances recorded on audio tape were judged by 10 experienced listeners on general voice quality, breathiness, hoarseness, and laryngeal strain on a 5-point scale. Seven parameters describing time-domain characteristics of the ELG-signal were extracted online by a special purpose computer system. Measurements were made over 500 consecutive vibratory cycles …

Voice quality after endoscopic laser surgery and radiotherapy for early glottic cancer: objective measurements emphasizing the Voice Handicap Index.

We analyzed the functional outcome and self-evaluation of the voice of patients with T1 glottic carcinoma treated with endoscopic laser surgery and radiotherapy. We performed an objective voice evaluation, as well as a physical, emotional and functional well being assessment of 19 patients treated with laser surgery and 18 patients treated with radiotherapy. Voice quality is affected both by surgery and radiotherapy. Voice parameters only show differences in the maximum phonation time between both treatments. Results in the Voice Handicap Index show that radiotherapy has less effect on patient…
