Background and Objectives: Peripheral nerve injuries around the shoulder are increasingly recognized in athletes who perform repetitive overhead motions. Suprascapular neuropathy is well described in volleyball players, whereas axillary neuropathy is usually attributed to dislocation or direct trauma. Concurrent, painless, non-traumatic involvement of both nerves is rare and may be mistaken for disuse or a rotator cuff disorder. Case Presentation: A 17-year-old male national-level volleyball player presented with painless atrophy of the dominant shoulder, noticed three months earlier, without …

This study examined sex differences in anthropometric and physical attributes, and their relationships with volleyball serve accuracy and speed among adolescent volleyball players. Fifty athletes (age: 13.1 ± 0.4 years; peak height velocity: -2.2 ± 0.3 years) voluntarily participated in this study. Anthropometric attributes, physical performances, and technical performance (i.e., serve accuracy and speed) were measured. The result showed that boys were taller, leaner, and had greater leg length than girls (all p < 0.001). Boys also outperformed girls in change of direction (p < 0.01), vertical…

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for injury to the thrower's shoulder remain a controversial topic.
PURPOSE: To prospectively investigate the relationship between risk factors and the outcomes of pain, injury, and dysfunction in the dominant shoulder of volleyball athletes.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence 2.
METHODS: Professional and masters-level athletes were followed for 8 months. All participants underwent physical examination, goniometry, dynamometry, and ultrasound. Injured athletes underwent magnetic resonance imaging. We analyzed the association of 15 risk factors with shoulde…

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive overhead movements stress the dominant shoulder of volleyball players, potentially causing glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) and suprascapular neuropathy. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of pathological GIRD and suprascapular neuropathy in male collegiate volleyball players.
METHODS: We evaluated 22 male collegiate volleyball players and compared the range of motion, the isometric shoulder strength, the thickness of the infraspinatus (ISP) muscle, and the latency and amplitude of the suprascapular nerve [in a nerve conduction study (NCS)…

BACKGROUND: Beach volleyball is an intensive sport with high impact on the lumbar spine. Low back pain (LBP) is frequent among elite players. Increased prevalence of pathological changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the lumbar spine of elite athletes has been reported.
HYPOTHESIS: There is an increased prevalence of disc degeneration and spondylolysis in the MRI of the lumbar spine of professional beach volleyball players.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: Twenty-nine fully competitive professional male volleyball players (mean age, 28 years) comp…

OBJECTIVE: The causal mechanism of the chronic sports injury patellar tendinopathy is not well understood. The aim of the present study was to compare ankle and knee joint dynamics during the performance of the volleyball spike jump between healthy volleyball players (n = 8) and asymptomatic volleyball players with previous patellar tendinopathy (n = 7).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
METHODS: Inverse dynamics were used to estimate ankle and knee joint dynamics. From these multiple biomechanical variables, a logistic regression was performed to estimate the probability of the presence or absence o…

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the effects of unstable strength training (UST) and traditional strength training (TST) on lower-body stability in adolescent volleyball players in China.
METHODS: This stratified randomized controlled trial recruited 62 eligible athletes from Shandong Province. Participants were assigned to either the UST group or the TST group, and both groups completed a 10-week training program.
RESULTS: Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) for within-group effects revealed statistically significant improvements in all dependent variables for both the UST and…

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to investigate the effects of a holistic training model, in which calisthenic exercises are synchronized with volleyball-specific techniques, on the athletic performance outcomes of adolescent athletes.
METHODS: Eighteen volunteer female volleyball players (aged 12) from a sports club's youth academy participated in the study. Participants were divided into an experimental group (n=9), in which calisthenic exercises were integrated into the main training process, and a control group (n=9), in which the same exercises were performed in isolation at the end of trai…

This study aimed to assess the impact of the VolleyVeilig program on enhancing upper extremity performance in female volleyball players. While previous research has focused mainly on lower extremity injury prevention, there remains a significant lack of studies examining how structured warm-up routines can influence upper extremity performance in the sport. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test was used. Thirty female volleyball players, aged 16 to 21, were randomly divided into two groups: VolleyVeilig intervention group and traditional warm-up group. The VolleyVeilig warm-u…

The objective of the present study was to examine the impact of different plyometric training (PT) surfaces on the adaptive changes of jumping ability, sprinting speed, change of direction ability and strength performance in volleyball players. Forty male players participated in the study and were divided into four equal groups performing PT in aquatic (APT), sand (SPT), and land (LPT) surfaces, or an active control group (CON). All training groups indicated small to large significant (p = 0.001) improvements in countermovement vertical jump (CMVJ), standing long jump (SLJ), spike jump, block …

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of mild fatigue on the biomechanics of the lower limbs of young male volleyball players while performing single leg landing tasks.
METHODS: A total of ten young male volleyball players were recruited as participants in this study. After the single leg landing was performed, we compared the performance between those with and without fatigue (post- and non-fatigue, respectively). Kinematics and kinetics were collected using instruments, and related captured data were imported into OpenSim to analyze the hip, knee, and ankle joints.
RESULTS: We found that t…

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation of anaerobic power and capacity on vertical jump performance in female volleyball athletes.
METHODS: Thirty-five female volleyball athletes who play at elite level, participated in the study voluntarily. Anaerobic power and capacity were measured by Wingate Anaerobic Performance Test, while vertical jump performance was measured by Optojump Photoelectric Cell System. Vertical jump performance was evaluated in two different jump positions as squat jump and countermovement jump.
RESULTS: As a result of the correlation analysis…

Shoulder problems are common in volleyball and greatly impede both training and player performance. Subacromial bursa (SAB) thickening and tendon neovascularity have shown relevance in other populations, but their relationship with the development of shoulder complaints has not been investigated in volleyball players or overhead-throwing athletes. The study aim was to examine the role of SAB thickness, neovascularization of the supraspinatus tendon, shoulder strength, range of motion (ROM), player position, and age in the development of shoulder complaints in professional volleyball players. P…

Enthesitis of the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle is a rare pathology which mainly affects professional athletes, and it is caused by overuse and repetitive microtrauma. Athletic jumping and kicking exert a great stress on the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle, and volleyball and football players are therefore most frequently affected. Enthesitis may occur suddenly causing pain and functional impairment possibly associated with partial or complete tendon injuries, or it may be a chronic condition causing non-specific clinical symptoms. We present the case of a professional v…
