Serum vitamin B12 and folate concentrations and the effect of the Mediterranean diet on vulnerable populations.

Low vitamin B12 and folate levels in expectant mothers may lead to low stores in babies. The aim of this study was to determine the frequencies of vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies in pregnant women and neonates, and to assess the effect of maternal vitamin status on babies' vitamin levels in the Aegean region of Turkey, where the Mediterranean diet (mainly fresh fruits and vegetables) is adopted. We studied 72 pregnant women and their singleton-term babies. Venous blood samples of expectant mothers were collected 1 h before delivery and cord blood of babies were obtained at birth. The mean

Hierarchical clustering for disentangling population vulnerability to asthma.

Asthma is influenced by air pollution and weather conditions, yet asthma-related responses to these exposures may vary across communities due to heterogeneity in population vulnerability-defined here as a context represented by socioeconomic, demographic, and landscape conditions. We propose a clustering framework to characterize region-level population vulnerability prior to exposure-asthma modeling. Using statewide longitudinal data from Pennsylvania (2011-2019), socioeconomic, demographic, and landscape factors are aggregated at the region level and clustered through a hierarchical algorith

Infantile Hemangioma: A Common Lesion in a Vulnerable Population.

Infantile hemangioma (IH) is important to all dentists, particularly dentists providing services to pediatric populations, because significant morbidity and mortality can occur from vascular lesions in children. Specialists of the oral cavity have the responsibility to identify patients with IH, a lesion that could be potentially life threatening. We present a case of IH and will provide a narrative review of the most recent literature. We discuss the diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment, complications, and impact on routine dental procedures. A proper diagnosis is crucial as oral and per

Fibromyalgia among University Students: A Vulnerable Population.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM), a complex musculoskeletal disorder, can affect individuals from different genders having different genetic and psychosocial backgrounds. The prevalence of FM depends specifically on the age, gender, and level of stress of the individual. Since the university student body tackles high levels of academic and non-academic stress, we aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of FM among such a vulnerable population. METHODS: A survey was sent to participants from two major English-speaking private universities in Lebanon; the American University of Beirut (

Environmental Exposures and Atherosclerotic Risk Factors in Vulnerable Youth: The Example of American Indian/Alaska Native Populations.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Environmental exposures are drivers of cardiovascular disease. These exposures, including climate change, metal toxicants, microplastics, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and particulate matter, can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through water or soil, and can promote atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, dysglycemia, and obesity. This review aims to describe environmental contributors to the development of ASCVD risk factors in childhood, with a focus on American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) children as a lens for

Internal and External Forms of Blame and Disgust and Their Relationships to Suicidal Ideation Within Vulnerable Populations.

Suicide risk is elevated among vulnerable populations. We examined two forms of internalization (i.e., self-blame, self-disgust) and externalization (i.e., other-blame, societal-disgust) and their associations with suicidal ideation (SI) in two studies. In Study 1 (n = 967), participants with mood and/or anxiety disorders completed self-report measures at admission and discharge on self-blame, other-blame, and SI. Study 2 (n = 295) investigated similar constructs among a sexual minority sample, with the addition of covariates including internalized homophobia, homophobia experiences, perceived…

Fair and effective vaccine allocation during pandemics: A system dynamics model for prioritization of socioeconomically vulnerable populations.

Health inequality emerged as a central ethical concern during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine prioritization guidelines have been criticized for overlooking socioeconomic disparities, leading to perceived unfairness. This study presents a system dynamics model that integrates age-stratified medical considerations with socioeconomic factors to propose a more equitable vaccine allocation strategy, using England as a case study. The model prioritizes socioeconomically vulnerable groups within the same age cohort until a defined vaccination threshold is reached. Applying an extended Susceptible-Exp

The Construct of Awe in Community Psychology: Toward a More Comprehensive Assessment for Applications to Vulnerable Populations.

This article contributes to the literature by (a) providing evidence of benefits of awe-inspiring interventions for a vulnerable population (i.e., residents of a homeless shelter), (b) reporting the development and validation of two new psychometric instruments that fill a significant void in the assessment of awe, and (c) providing recommendations for future research examining the use of these new instruments in assessing awe in vulnerable populations. Awe refers to peak experiences of sublime wonderment, accompanied by awe-related reactions including a sense of vastness, self-transcendence, …

Congenital Syphilis in the United States from 2019 to 2024: A Public Health Crisis in Vulnerable Populations.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital syphilis (CS) has reemerged as a critical public health concern in the United States, with rates increasing 10-fold over the past decade. Rising CS cases pose clinical challenges for hospital-based pediatricians, including newborn nursery hospitalists and neonatologists, who are often central to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. This study examines patient- and hospital-level characteristics, risk factors, and neonatal outcomes among infants born with CS. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 6.75 million patients (2019-2024) was conducted using the Vizient Clinica

Reaching Structurally Vulnerable Populations Using Low-Barrier COVID-19 Testing Clinics Co-Created with Community-Based Organizations.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected people from structurally vulnerable communities. There was a need to improve COVID-19 testing in these communities to reduce viral spread and connect to treatment. OBJECTIVE: We created a partnership between an academic medical center and three community-based organizations (CBOs) to offer low-barrier COVID-19 walk-up testing clinics in Portland, Maine. Our objective was to examine whether the co-created testing clinics reached structurally vulnerable populations. DESIGN: The clinics offered COVID-19 rapid antigen tests three time…

Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Manifestations of COVID-19: Evolving Recognition and Need for Increased Understanding in Vulnerable Populations.

The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has caused a global pandemic with high morbidity and mortality. It was first observed to cause a severe acute respiratory syndrome. However, gastrointestinal and hepatic manifestations have been increasingly recognized. Gastrointestinal symptoms include diarrhea, epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. Diarrhea is the most common GI manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 and can present without or without respiratory symptoms. Patients with GI symptoms have been associated with longer duration of illness and may be associated with more severe illness. Mechanism of diarrh

Disparities in Healthcare Utilization Among Vulnerable Populations During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil: An Intersectional Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Brazil's Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde-SUS) has played a crucial role in reducing health disparities by providing universal and free healthcare to a diverse population. However, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant barriers to healthcare access among vulnerable groups, particularly due to the intersection of multiple vulnerabilities. This study aimed to examine how intersectionality-specifically sex/gender, race/ethnicity, and education level-has influenced inequalities in healthcare service utilization among vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 pandemic …

Implementation of Point-of-Care PCR-testing for the diagnosis of respiratory infections in vulnerable patient populations.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-Care (POC) PCR-testing provides accurate, and timely results in diagnosing respiratory viral infections. Despite these benefits, stakeholder perceptions and its potential for improving health outcomes remain insufficiently explored. Therefore, we aim to explore the acceptability and feasibility of POC PCR-testing implementation in settings attended by vulnerable populations. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with stakeholders from ambulatory settings, including decision makers, molecular diagnostics experts, healthcare workers, and patients. Study settings …
