Between 1940 and 1970, 107 patients more than 1 year of age with 134 congenitally dislocated hips were treated at the Alfred I. duPont Institute. It was found that after initial reduction 66% of hips reduced closed and approximately 30% of hips reduced open required further surgery. Good acetabular development was seen in 19% of hips reduced between 2 and 3 years, but only in 7% reduced after 3 years of age. The best results in the correction of residual dysplasia or subluxation were seen if correction was done before 6 years of age. Avascular necrosis was highest after simple open reduction a

Walking over variable and/or unstable terrain is a key aspect of daily life and was crucial to the evolution of bipedalism. The ability to find gait solutions that maintained stability over uneven terrain for the least increase in metabolic cost was likely a hallmark of locomotor effectiveness in early humans, in particular acting as an adaptive pressure to shape various morphological traits, including those related to mass distribution. Previous research has shown that having a lower center of mass increases the stability of gait and may potentially decrease cost, both over variable terrain,

AIMS: Although cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is the gold standard to assess exercise capacity, simpler tests (i.e., 6-min walk test, 6MWT) are also commonly used. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between cardiorespiratory parameters during CPET and 6MWT in a large, multicentre, heterogeneous population.
METHODS: We included athletes, healthy subjects, and heart failure (HF) patients of different severity, including left ventricular assist device (LVAD) carriers, who underwent both CPET and 6MWT with oxygen consumption measurement.
RESULTS: We enrolled 186 subj

RATIONALE: The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a practical and simple field-based test to assess physical capacity. Several reference equations for six-minute walking distance (6MWD, m) exist, but have a number of limitations that decrease their clinical utility. In addition, no reference equations exist for the 6MWT-derived outcome six-minute walk work (6MWORK, kg.m).
OBJECTIVES: To establish new reference equations for 6MWD and 6MWORK on a 20 m course using data from the population-based Canadian Cohort Obstructive Lung Disease study.
METHODS AND MEASUREMENTS: A total of 335 participants wi

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite low levels of disability, youth with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) engage in less physical activity compared with peers. The contribution of walking capacity, endurance, behavior, and MS comorbidities remains relatively undefined and may provide valuable insights into the limitations toward physical activity in youth with MS. The primary objective of this study was to investigate differences in walking capacity, endurance, and real-world behaviors of daily activity between youth with POMS and controls.
METHODS: Youth diagnosed with MS prior to 18

BACKGROUND: Postural instability and gait difficulties (PIGD) are a significant cause of falls, and immobility in Parkinson's disease (PD). Most gait assessments are based on assessing forward walking compared to retro walking. Retro walking is more difficult because of absence of visual cues, and more complex multisensory processing. Little is known about clinical PIGD motor features, mobility and body composition correlates of retro-walking compared to forward walking in PD.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between retro and forward walking and PIGD in PD.
METHODS: 78 PD underwent cl

PURPOSE: This study investigated whether: 1) walking training (WT) changes cardiovascular load after walking until maximal intermittent claudication (IC) in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD); and 2) acute and chronic cardiovascular responses to walking were related to each other.
METHODS: A randomized, controlled, parallel-group design was employed. Thirty-two men with PAD and IC were randomly assigned to one of two groups: WT (n=16) or control (CO, n=16) twice a week for 12 weeks. The WT group completed 15, 2-min bouts of walking at moderate intensity interspersed with 2-min upri

Over a third of community-residing elderly have clinical gait abnormalities, and gait impairment is associated with morbidity, mortality and dementia. Motor imagery - envisioning motor actions without actual execution - has been used to improve gait in Parkinson's disease and poststroke, but the efficacy of motor imagery in healthy elderly is unknown. This single-blind pilot randomized-controlled trial aims to establish feasibility and explore the efficacy of a 3-month, telephone-based motor imagery intervention - that involves imagined walking, imagined talking and imagined walking while talk

PURPOSE: This study examines whether and how report of a change in walking behavior, incident PCMD, predicts subsequent reduction in walking activity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data are from a prospective study of 436 community-dwelling women age 70-79 years. Outcome measures include subjective and objective measures of walking ability at 3 years.
PRINCIPAL RESULTS: Incident PCMD is associated with the loss of walking abilities at 3-years, regardless of baseline physical impairment. Compared to women without, women with incident PCMD at 1.5 years after baseline were 2.7 (95%CI 1.4-7.2) times mo

INTRODUCTION: Older medical patients (>65 years) represent 54% of the admissions to Danish medical and emergency departments. Acute admissions and bed-rest during hospitalisation are independent risk factors for death and dependency in older patients. Even short hospitalisations are associated with increased dependency in activities of daily living after discharge. Interventions that increase mobility during hospitalisation are therefore important. The purpose of this protocol is to describe the intervention design of the WALK-Copenhagen project, aimed at increasing 24 hours mobility in older

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke survivors often exhibit reduced walking efficiency, reflected by an increased energy cost of walking (Cw). Although Cw has been associated with walking performance, its relationship with impairment severity and independence in activities of daily living (ADL) remains unclear, particularly across real-life walking conditions. This study aimed to examine the association between impairment severity and Cw across real-life walking tasks. A secondary objective was to assess the association between Cw and independence in ADL.
METHODS: This secondary analysis used data

BACKGROUND: Finding new ways to support physical activity participation after cancer is an important challenge. This research aimed to develop a walking and running program that could support people living with and beyond cancer to participate in fun run-style events.
METHODS: Mixed methods research that followed guidance for developing complex interventions was conducted in 2 phases. Phase 1 included a review of published evidence, stakeholder consultation, and co-design workshops, which were used to develop an initial program protocol. Phase 2 included iterative piloting of the program, via

Background. For survival of the organism, T cells must efficiently control pathogens invading different peripheral tissues. Whether or not such control is achieved by utilizing different movement strategies in different tissues remains poorly understood. Liver-localized CD8 T cells perform correlated random walks --- a type of a Brownian walk -- in liver sinusoids but in some condition these T cells may also perform Levy flights -- rapid and large displacements by floating with the blood flow. CD8 T cells in lymph nodes or skin also undergo Brownian walks. A recent study suggested that brain-

The increased prevalence for flatfoot and hallux valgus in modern societies may be the consequence of inadequate footwear in childhood. Based on the assumption that barefoot walking represents the best condition for the development of a healthy foot the objective of this study was to monitor the influence of commercial footwear on children's foot motion during walking. Furthermore, an attempt was made to reduce this influence by changing the physical properties of standard footwear. Children's barefoot motion pattern was monitored by a marker-based optical 3D-tracking method using a multi-segm

We examined the effects of age and gender on the relationship between knee strength and walking time during a walk-turn-walk test in 176 male and 168 female generally healthy participants of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging who were aged 21-89 years. Subjects were timed as they walked 50 ft (15.24 m), turned around, and walked back to the starting point, both at a comfortable pace and as fast as possible. Isokinetic concentric knee extensor strength was measured at 30 degrees /s by using a Kin-Com dynamometer. Both comfortable and fast gait times increased with increasing age for both
