Post-traumatic stress among adolescents following the October 7th attack in Israel: implications for mental health policy and planning.

BACKGROUND: The October 7th, 2023, attack in Israel and the ensuing war exposed Israeli youth to intense and prolonged traumatic stress. This study aimed to: (1) examine the prevalence of probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Israeli adolescents, and (2) identify associated risk and resilience factors for PTSD symptoms within the context of prolonged exposure to threat and uncertainty due to ongoing war and conflict. METHODS: A cross-sectional digital survey was conducted between October and December 2024. Data were collected from 744 adolescents aged 14-18 years, including the

Understanding how deployment experiences change over time: Comparison of female and male OEF/OIF and Gulf War veterans.

Despite increased attention to the evolving nature of war, the unique challenges of contemporary deployment, and women's changing role in warfare, few studies have examined differences in deployment stressors across eras of service or evaluated how gender differences in deployment experiences have changed over time. Using data collected from two national survey studies, we examined war cohort and gender differences in veterans' reports of both mission-related and interpersonal stressors during deployment. Although Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans reported more co

Gastrointestinal neuroimmune disruption in a mouse model of Gulf War illness.

Gulf War illness (GWI) is a chronic multisymptom disorder that is prominent in Gulf War veterans. Major unexplained symptoms of GWI include functional gastrointestinal disorders and undiagnosed illnesses, including neurologic disorders. Exposure to the antinerve gas drug pyridostigmine bromide (PB) is linked to the development of GWI, but the exact mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that PB alters gut function by disrupting the neural and immune systems of the intestine. We exposed male and female mice to physiologically comparable amounts of PB that match the dose, rout

When Childhood Trauma Meets War: Emotional Eating Through the Lens of PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the interplay between childhood trauma, war exposure, and maladaptive coping mechanisms, with a focus on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a mediator and war exposure as a potential moderator in the relationship between childhood trauma and emotional eating. METHODS: Participants completed validated measures of childhood trauma, PTSD, and emotional eating. Statistical analyses included Pearson correlations, stepwise linear regression, and moderated mediation models, adjusting for age and gender. RESULTS: The study included 426 Hebrew-speaking Israeli adu…

Molecular and Functional Alterations of P-Glycoprotein in a Genetic Model of Epilepsy: Insights from the Wistar Audiogenic Rat.

Drug resistance remains a major challenge in epilepsy, and overexpression of ATP-binding cassette transporters, particularly P-glycoprotein (P-gp), at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) has been consistently implicated in limiting central nervous system drug exposure. Genetic experimental models suitable for investigating molecular regulation and functional alterations of P-gp in epilepsy remain scarce. This study evaluated P-gp expression and functional alterations in the Wistar Audiogenic Rat (WAR), a genetic model of epilepsy exhibiting phenotypic heterogeneity. WAR animals were classified into

Is war hard on the heart? Gender, wartime stress and late life cardiovascular conditions in a population of Vietnamese older adults.

Populations in the global south are disproportionately exposed to the stressors of development, disaster and armed conflict, all of which he … nd resultant PTSD, widespread in this cohort of Vietnamese older adults who endured myriad forms of war exposure during their young adulthood, exhibit modest, yet significant associations with late-life cardiovascular conditions. Women, especially those exposed to wartime violence and combat, bear this CVD burden alongside men.

Symptoms of depression and somatization during the Israel-Hamas War: the role of world assumptions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Civilians living in conditions of war tend to focus on survival with their daily life disrupted, impacting their mental health. The current study focused on examining the mental health of Israeli parents of young children exposed to missile attacks during the Israel-Hamas War. Specifically, the study aimed to examine the relationship between the exposure to missile attacks with depression and somatization among parents of young children, and the moderating role of world assumptions in this relationship. DESIGN: A web-based national sample included 326 parents with a

Posttraumatic stress disorder among Vietnam Theater Veterans. A causal model of etiology in a community sample.

Data from the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study, conducted from 1986 to 1988, were used to develop and cross-validate a model of the etiology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among a community sample of 1198 male Vietnam theater veterans. The initial model specified causal paths among five sets of variables, ordered according to their historical occurrence: a) premilitary risk factors and traumas, b) war-related and non-war-related traumas during the military, c) homecoming reception, d) postmilitary traumas, and e) PTSD. The initial model was refined and then cross-validated

Victimization and adversity among children experiencing war-related parental absence or deployment in a nationally representative US sample.

This study compares children and youth who have experienced lifetime war-related parental absence or deployment with those having no such history on a variety of victimization types, non-victimization adversity, trauma symptoms, and delinquency; and assesses whether cumulative adversity and victimization help to explain elevated emotional and behavioral problems among children of parents who have experienced war-related absence or deployment. The National Surveys of Children's Exposure to Violence (NatSCEV) are comprised of three cross-sectional telephone surveys conducted in 2008, 2011, and 2

Posttraumatic stress disorder among women after the war in Sarajevo: a rationale for genetic study.

An exposure to extreme trauma events leads to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in up to 14-50% of war survivors. Recent findings suggest that genetic factors could play a certain role in PTSD development. In order to illustrate this possibility, we present results of a pilot study on gender specific sample of Sarajevo civilians immediately after the war cessation. During the period 1992-1995, Sarajevo civilians experienced continuous life threatening events with a great risk of developing PTSD in such conditions. Our study included 100 women adjusted to same socio-demographic characteristi

Is exposure to chemical pollutants associated with sleep outcomes? A systematic review.

Environmental exposures may influence sleep; however, the contributions of environmental chemical pollutants to sleep health have not been systematically investigated. We conducted a systematic review to identify, evaluate, summarize, and synthesize the existing evidence between chemical pollutants (air pollution, exposures related to the Gulf War and other conflicts, endocrine disruptors, metals, pesticides, solvents) and dimensions of sleep health (architecture, duration, quality, timing) and disorders (sleeping pill use, insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing)). Gulf War agents pyridostigmine bromide and permethrin cause hypersensitive nociception that is restored after vagus nerve stimulation.

Gulf war illness (GWI) is a chronic multi-symptom disease that afflicts 25-33% of troops that were deployed in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. GWI symptoms include cognitive, behavioral and emotional deficits, as well as migraines and pain. It is possible that exposure to Gulf War agents and prophylactics contributed to the reported symptomology. Pyridostigmine bromide (PB) and permethrin (PER) were given to protect from nerve gas attacks and insect vector born disease, respectively. Previous studies have demonstrated that 10 days of exposure to these chemicals can cause symptoms analogous to those ob

The Intersection of Traumatic Events Across Generations: PTSD Symptoms Among War Veterans With Holocaust Survivor Parents Before and Following the October 7 Terror Attack.

Previous traumatic exposure, as well as ancestral trauma, may render individuals more sensitive to subsequent trauma. The current study examined the intersection between traumatic events across generations by assessing change in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms before and after the October 7 terror attack among Israeli war veterans while accounting for parental Holocaust exposure. A web-based random sample of 331 Yom Kippur War male veterans of European origin (Mage = 72.54, SD = 2.86) completed questionnaires in three waves before and after the October 7 attack. Experiential avoidance is associated with medical and mental health diagnoses in a national sample of deployed Gulf War veterans.

A substantial minority of deployed Gulf War veterans developed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and several chronic illnesses. Although military combat and exposure to certain nuclear, biological, and chemical agents (NBCs) increase risk for post-deployment health problems, they do not fully explain many Gulf War veteran health diagnoses and are not viable treatment targets. Experiential avoidance (EA; one's unwillingness to remain in contact with unpleasant internal experiences) is a modifiable psychosocial risk factor associated with PTSD and depression in veterans as well a
