Ultra-light and robust chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/MXene double cross-linked aerogel efficiently adsorbs Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from wastewater for water purification.

Pollution from heavy metal wastewater poses a major threat to the natural and human environments, and the development of efficient and convenient remediation materials has become a top priority. Hence, we designed an ultra-light (0.0562 g/cm3) and robust (2.18 MPa) Chitosan/Polyvinyl alcohol/MXene double crosslinked aerogel by simple steps, and its three-dimensional porous structure endowed the aerogel with excellent compressive properties and a large number of adsorption sites for Cr(VI) and Pb(II). The adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir adsorption isothermal model and the ps

Molecular insights into the migration of organic contaminants during purification of epoxy resin waste salt: A comparative study of interfacial wetting and ethanol/water extraction processes.

Organic contaminants are a major factor restricting the efficient purification and resource utilization of industrial waste salts. Interfacial wetting (IW) and extraction/water extraction (E/W E) are the primary pretreatment processes for the removal of organic contaminants from waste salts. However, the molecular-level understanding of the removal and migration behaviors of organics during purification remains limited. In this study, molecular-level characterization based on Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), combined with bulk characterization techniques

Valorization of coal gangue into molecular sieve assisting Co₃O₄ in promoting Co2+/Co3+ cycle and oxygen vacancy generation for efficient peroxymonosulfate activation in water purification.

Spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) has the ability to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for pollutant degradation, but agglomeration and poor active sites of pure Co3O4 limit its efficiency, even its mechanism is ambiguous. Herein, coal gangue (CG)-derived molecular sieve (CGMS) was prepared via an alkali fusion-hydrothermal method and the Co3O4/CGMS composite was fabricated by a simple calcination process. Co3O4/CGMS was utilized to activate PMS for methylene blue (MB) degradation. Under optimized conditions, 95.29% of MB was removed within 21 min in the Co3O4/CGMS-PMS system, outperforming the prist

[ASSESSMENT OF POTENTIAL RISK FOR CONTAMINATION OF SURFACE WATER RESERVOIRS BY PATHOGENS OF HUMAN PARASITIC DISEASES].

Sanitary and parasitological studies of the waste effluents and surface reservoir waters were conducted in the south of Russia. The efficiency of purification of waste effluents from the pathogens of parasitic diseases was investigated in the region's sewage-purification facilities. The water of the surface water reservoirs was found to contain helminthic eggs and larvae and intestinal protozoan cysts because of the poor purification and disinfection of service fecal sewage waters. The poor purification and disinvasion of waste effluents in the region determine the potential risk of contaminat

Scalable hybrid electrode-based capacitive deionization modules for practical water softening.

Conventional water softening technologies suffer from high energy consumption and reliance on chemicals, while existing capacitive deionization (CDI) approaches still struggle to sufficiently remove hardness ions from domestic tap water. Herein, we demonstrate roll-to-roll fabricated scalable vanadium-oxide-based hybrid (VH) electrodes for the construction of bipolar multistack CDI modules toward practical water softening technology. The VH electrode couples faradaic V⁵⁺/V⁴⁺ ion storage with electrical double layer adsorption, delivering high divalent capacity and rate capability in the hard-w

Water Desalination through Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Membranes: Significant Role of Functional Groups.

A molecular simulation study is reported for water desalination through five zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes, namely ZIF-25, -71, -93, -96, and -97. The five ZIFs possess identical rho-topology but differ in functional groups. The rejection of salt (NaCl) is found to be around 97% in ZIF-25, and 100% in the other four ZIFs. The permeance ranges from 27 to 710 kg/(m(2)·h·bar), about one∼two orders of magnitude higher compared with commercial reverse osmosis membranes. Due to a larger aperture size da, ZIF-25, -71, and -96 exhibit a much higher water flux than ZIF-93 and -97; howe

Impact of backwashing procedures on deep bed filtration productivity in drinking water treatment.

Backwash procedures for deep bed filters were evaluated and compared by means of a new integrated approach based on productivity. For this, different backwash procedures were experimentally evaluated by using a pilot plant for direct filtration. A standard backwash mode as applied in practice served as a reference and effluent turbidity was used as the criterion for filter run termination. The backwash water volumes needed, duration of the filter-to-waste period, time out of operation, total volume discharged and filter run-time were determined and used to calculate average filtration velocity

Modeling of Hydraulic Performance in Disks and Full-Scale Ceramic Water Filters.

Ceramic filters for household water treatment can improve water quality and reduce diarrheal disease. Hydraulic performance is critical for quality control and user acceptability, and hydraulic models have previously been developed and tested with experimental full-scale filters. As filters are cumbersome, there is interest in using disks instead of filters in laboratory efficacy studies. To assess the validity of disk use, we collected experimental volume from three sets of full-scale frustum-shaped filters and matching disks with different burn-out material sieve sizes and firing temperature

Enhancing the double-slope solar still performance using simple solar collector and floatable black wicks.

This research aims to investigate the effect of integrating a simple solar collector, floatable black wicks, and orientation as modified double-slope solar still (MDSSS), and to compare its performance with conventional double-slope solar still (CDSSS). Costs of the developed desalination system were estimated, and its performance was compared with the previous literatures. A black hose was coiled and used as simple solar collector for preheating the saline water that is fed to the solar still. The floatable black wicks were used to increase the evaporation surface area and cause a localizatio

Filtration-Dominant Water Treatment Architectures for High-Purity Applications.

Water quality is a critical control variable for healthcare device processing and other high-purity applications. Many facilities rely on chemical treatments (e.g., salt-based softeners, sodium bisulfite for dechlorination), but these methods increase system complexity, generate chemical waste, and introduce risks to staff, patients, and downstream wastewater systems. These challenges are particularly noteworthy in healthcare settings, where both safety and environmental performance are tightly regulated. Filtration-based alternatives that reduce dependence on chemical dosing were evaluated in

Magnesium enrichment of desalinated water: Technologies, mechanisms, and practical considerations - a critical review.

Desalinated water, while increasingly relied upon as a sustainable source of drinking water, is deficient in essential minerals, out of which the most important macronutrient is magnesium. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to cardiovascular diseases and other health risks in humans, as well as negative effects on agricultural productivity when desalinated water is used for irrigation. This review covers current technological approaches for enriching desalinated water with Mg2+, ranging from simple techniques such as dilution with seawater or other brines, direct chemical supplementation and

Decarbonized and circular brine management/valorization for water & valuable resource recovery via minimal/zero liquid discharge (MLD/ZLD) strategies.

Brine (saline wastewater/water) from desalination, salt lakes, and industrial activities (e.g., pharmaceutical industries, oil & gas industries) has received a lot of attention around the world due to its adverse impact on the environment. Currently, several disposal methods have been applied; however, these methods are nowadays unsustainable. To tackle this problem, brine treatment and valorization is considered a promising strategy to eliminate brine discharge and recover valuable resources such as water, minerals, salts, metals, and energy. Brine valorization and resource recovery can be ac

Potential concerns in fullerene application to water treatment related to transformation, cellular uptake and intracellular catalysis.

Fullerene (C60) exhibits versatile properties that shows great potential for improving water treatment technologies. However, the probable transformation of C60 during water treatment, which consequently changes the physicochemical properties and toxicity of the parent compound, may introduce doubt concerning its application. Our results demonstrated that the C60 aggregate (nC60) was transformed to a more oxidized form under common water disinfection processes (i.e., ultraviolet irradiation and photochlorination). The light-irradiated product (UV_nC60) exhibited lower cytotoxicity toward macro

Water Consumption and Chronic Hemodialysis Therapy: Where Do We Stand? Where Must We Go? Review of Clinical Practices.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hemodialysis therapy is a life-saving procedure requiring large amounts of water whereas this natural resource availability declines with increasing temperatures and the dialysis needs are far from being covered in many world areas. SUMMARY: Reducing water consumption in hemodialysis relies on the moto "reduce, reuse, and recycle." Because of a significant amount of water is discarded to the drain by the procedure, the efficiency of the reverse osmosis (RO) of the water treatment system is a key factor of water consumption during the hemodialysis session. Along decades, th

A versatile polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite sponge for the removal of organic contaminants from waters.

As the global population grows, the introduction of pollutants into aquatic environments increases, posing significant health risks to humans and wildlife. Effective removal of harmful organic contaminants near discharge points can minimize the need for large-scale wastewater treatment technologies. Here, we developed a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sponge with controlled pore size to enhance surface area and sorptive capacity, and further functionalized it to improve adsorption, catalytic capabilities and biocidal properties. The PDMS sponge was tested to remove a wide range of organic contamin

Mechanistic and Kinetic Understanding of the UV254 Photolysis of Chlorine and Bromine Species in Water and Formation of Oxyhalides.

This study investigated the UV254 photolysis of free available chlorine and bromine species in water. The intrinsic quantum yields for •OH and X• (X = Cl or Br) generation were determined by model fitting of formaldehyde formation using a tert-butanol assay to be 0.61/0.45 for HOCl/OCl- and 0.32/0.43 for HOBr/OBr-. The steady-state •OH concentration in UV/HOX was higher than that in UV/OX- by a factor of 23.3 and 7.8 for Cl and Br, respectively. This was attributed to the different •OH consumption rate by HOCl versus OCl-, while for HOBr/OBr-, both the •OH formation and consumption rates were

Removal of particles in organic filters in experimental treatment systems for domestic wastewater and black water.

This study assesses the total suspended solids (TSS) retention capacity of different organic filter media for two potential applications: (i) a polishing unit for package treatment plants and (ii) a pretreatment for blackwater from low-flushing toilets. The results showed that the peat filter media used can be significantly improved in terms of structural stability and TSS removal capacity by mixing it with sawdust. Most of the TSS accumulated in the upper part of the filter material, and filter thickness exceeding 15 cm had no statistically significant effect (P < 0.1) on the TSS treatment pe

Sustainable water resources through harvesting rainwater and the effectiveness of a low-cost water treatment.

Increases in world population and climate change are some of the pressures affecting water resources for current and future water availability. The variability in water availability can reduce agricultural yields, food supplies and potentially leads to malnutrition and spread of diseases in water-poor countries. Even some water-rich countries can experience prolonged periods of dry weather, causing a drop in water reservoirs levels, forcing more restricted water resources management. Rainwater harvesting is one key option in adapting to water shortage and future demands that may alleviate the

The pesticide mineralization capacity in sand filter units of drinking water treatment plants (DWTP): Consistency in time and relationship with intake water and sand filter characteristics.

Sand filters (SFs) are commonly applied in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) for removal of iron and manganese but also show potential for microbial degradation of pesticide residues. The latter is advantageous in case the intake water contains pesticide residues. However, whether this involves mineralization suggesting no generation of harmful transformation products, its consistency over time, and how this ability relates to physicochemical and biological characteristics of the DWTP intake water and the SFs is unknown. The capacity to mineralize the herbicides bentazon and 2-methyl-4-c
