Traffic collisions between electric mobility devices (wheelchairs) and motor vehicles: Accidents, hubris, or self-destructive behavior?

OBJECTIVE: This study had its genesis in a personally observed collision between a motor vehicle and a motorized wheelchair (electric mobility device) on a busy street in the middle of the block at an unmarked crossing. To the observer, at the time, this appeared to be a suicidal act. This investigation was initiated to both delineate the number of these crashes nationally and understand this phenomena as a potentially planned act of self-destruction. DESIGN: An initial survey of police reports was immediately frustrated by an inability to separate motor vehicle and electric mobility device c

Effect of travel direction and wheelchair position on the ease of a caregiver getting an occupied wheelchair across a soft surface: a randomized crossover trial.

PURPOSE: To test the hypotheses that, in comparison with pushing an occupied upright manual wheelchair forward, pulling backward on the push … further study is needed, our findings suggest that caregivers should pull rather than push occupied wheelchairs across soft surfaces. In the forward direction, caregivers may find the wheelie position easier than the upright condition. These techniques have the potential to both improve the effectiveness of and reduce injuries to caregivers. Clinical Trial Re …

Pilot analysis of forces that can destabilise occupied manual wheelchairs on low-floor public transit buses.

PURPOSE: Prior to identifying optimal restraint or containment systems to prevent people using manual wheelchairs sliding or tipping on large public transit buses, the forces that destabilise them must be understood. This pilot study documented the (1) forces that wheelchairs experience on buses, (2) movement of wheelchairs on buses, and (3) differences between normal operating forces and the forces that lead to a wheelchair sliding or tipping. Methods: Data on the forces that acted on three manual wheelchairs were gathered using accelerometers across six bus routes with varied terrain. Data r…

Effects of transfer board use on physical load and transfer time in wheelchair-to-bed and bed-to-wheelchair transfers in simulated lower limb disability.

This study evaluated the impact of a transfer board on reducing physical demands during wheelchair-to-bed and bed-to-wheelchair transfers. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention design was conducted with 23 university students simulating individuals with disabilities after training in transfer board use. Dependent variables included cardiovascular load (heart rate), transfer time, and perceived effort (Borg scale). Using the transfer board significantly reduced cardiovascular load from 19.2% to 11.2% (p = 0.001), decreased transfer time by 23.1% (p = 0.03), and lowered perceived effor

System for Operating Electric Wheelchairs Using Only the Remaining Functions of the Thumbs of Muscular Dystrophy Patients.

For patients with muscular dystrophy, a motor dysfunction, who have difficulty operating an electric wheelchair with joysticks, a simplified one-input device is used. However, avoiding obstacles can be time-consuming. In this study, we analyzed the motor functions of the thumb of a patient with severe muscular dystrophy and identified the operations that did not cause physical fatigue. Then, we developed an operation support system to continuously operate. Finally, we conducted experiments comparing the proposed system with the conventional system and verified the effectiveness of the proposed

Braces, wheelchairs, and iron lungs: the paralyzed body and the machinery of rehabilitation in the polio epidemics.

The successful fund raising appeals of the March of Dimes employed images of cute crippled children standing on braces and forearm crutches, sitting in wheelchairs, or confined to iron lungs. Those who had to use these devices as a result of polio, however, were often stigmatized as cripples. American cultural antipathy to these assistive devices meant that polio survivors often had to overcome an emotional and psychological resistance to using them. Whatever their fears, polio survivors quickly discovered the functionality of braces and wheelchairs. By confronting the cultural stigma associat…

Hand forces exerted by long-term care staff when pushing wheelchairs on compliant and non-compliant flooring.

Purpose-designed compliant flooring and carpeting have been promoted as a means for reducing fall-related injuries in high-risk environments, such as long-term care. However, it is not known whether these surfaces influence the forces that long-term care staff exert when pushing residents in wheelchairs. We studied 14 direct-care staff who pushed a loaded wheelchair instrumented with a triaxial load cell to test the effects on hand force of flooring overlay (vinyl versus carpet) and flooring subfloor (concrete versus compliant rubber [brand: SmartCells]). During straight-line pushing, carpet o…
