[Comparitive study of the threshold variability between blue-on-yellow perimetry and white-on-white perimetry].

PURPOSE: To compare the threshold variability of blue-on-yellow (B/Y) perimetry with white-white(W/W) perimetry, and evaluate the reproducibility of B/Y perimetry. METHODS: The B/Y perimetry and W/W perimetry in the Octopus 101 perimetry were used to examine the visual fields of 12 normal subjects (24 eyes), 16 cases (32 eyes) of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), and 7 cases (14 eyes) of suspected POAG respectively. The B/Y perimetry and W/W perimetry were repeated to examine within 2 weeks. The point by point threshold variability of the two perimetries were compared and analysed. RESULTS…

[Immediate hypersensitive reactions to the ingestion of egg white and IgE binding to the egg white components].

IgE is considered to be involved in immediate hypersensitive reactions (IHR) following egg ingestion. IgE antibody levels to egg-white (EW) antigens in the IHR-positive group (n = 19, mean age +/- SD = 5.2 +/- 4.5 yr) were higher than those in the IHR-negative group (n = 13, mean of age +/- SD = 3.6 +/- 2.2 yr). However, even in the IHR-negative group, some patients showed high IgE to EW. RAST inhibition tests with heat-treated (100 degrees C, 5, 10, and 30 min) egg-white antigens were performed on 13 serum samples from subjects with IHR and 9 serum samples from subjects without IHR. Heat trea…

Prevalence of the Lyme disease spirochete in populations of white-tailed deer and white-footed mice.

The prevalence of the Ixodes dammini spirochete (IDS) in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) was studied on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. Both species commonly occur in a variety of habitats, are preferred hosts of Ixodes dammini, and can harbor the spirochetes in the blood. Each animal was examined for spirochetemia, tick infestation, and IDS infection rates in the ticks that were removed from it. The results obtained suggest that in winter deer can be infected by questing adult I. dammini. Adult ticks apparently are infected thro…

Effects of Different Photoperiods on the Transcriptome of the Ovary and Small White Follicles in Zhedong White Geese.

Photoperiod can regulate the broodiness of geese and thus increase their egg-laying rate. The laying performance of geese is mainly determined by ovary and follicle development. To understand the effect of photoperiod on the ovary and small white follicles, sixteen 220-day-old healthy female Zhedong white geese were randomly divided into two groups for long photoperiods (15L:9D) and short photoperiods (9L:15D). The geese were euthanized after two months of feeding, and their ovaries and follicles were collected for transcriptome sequencing. RNA-seq analysis identified 187 and 448 differentiall…

Ocular biometrics in eyes with different white-to-white corneal diameter in young myopic adults.

The interactions between white-to-white corneal diameter (WTW) and other ocular biometrics are important for planning of refractive surgery and understanding of ocular structural changes in myopia, but such interactions are rarely investigated in young myopic adults. This is a retrospective study involving 7893 young myopic adults from five centers. WTW and other ocular biometrics were measured by Pentacam. The ocular biometrics included anterior corneal curvature (AK) and posterior corneal curvature (PK), central corneal thickness (CCT) and corneal volume (CV), anterior and corneal eccentrici…

Endogenous retrovirus insertion in the KIT oncogene determines white and white spotting in domestic cats.

The Dominant White locus (W) in the domestic cat demonstrates pleiotropic effects exhibiting complete penetrance for absence of coat pigmentation and incomplete penetrance for deafness and iris hypopigmentation. We performed linkage analysis using a pedigree segregating White to identify KIT (Chr. B1) as the feline W locus. Segregation and sequence analysis of the KIT gene in two pedigrees (P1 and P2) revealed the remarkable retrotransposition and evolution of a feline endogenous retrovirus (FERV1) as responsible for two distinct phenotypes of the W locus, Dominant White, and white spotting. A…

CLCN7 polymorphisms and bone mineral density in healthy premenopausal white women and in white men.

INTRODUCTION: Mutations in the chloride channel 7 gene (CLCN7) cause osteopetrosis, and polymorphisms of CLCN7 in the non-disease allele are associated with penetrance of the autosomal dominant osteopetrosis (ADO) phenotype. Studies have also shown an association between CLCN7 polymorphisms and bone mineral density (BMD) in women. However, there is no study to date that has examined whether CLCN7 polymorphisms underlie normal variation of peak BMD in healthy premenopausal white women and in white men. METHODS: Six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and one variable number tandem repeat (V…

White muscle strain in the common carp and red to white muscle gearing ratios in fish.

White muscle strains were recorded using sonomicrometry techniques for 70 fast-starts in the common carp Cyprinus carpio L. High-speed cine images were recorded simultaneously for 54 of these starts, and muscle strain was calculated independently from the digitized outlines of the fish. Sonomicrometry measurements of superficial muscle strain were not significantly different from the strain as calculated from the theory of simple bending of a homogeneous material: superficial muscle strain thus varied with chordwise distance from the spine. However, white muscle strain across a transverse sect…

What's a White Matter 'Fiber'?

White matter anatomy is investigated using methods that operate at markedly different spatial scales and rely on distinct biological and physical principles. Nevertheless, the term "fiber" is routinely applied to the outputs of tract-tracing studies, diffusion MRI tractography, and postmortem fiber dissection, often as though these entities were directly interchangeable. This Viewpoint examines what a "fiber" represents in each methodological context. In tract tracing, the term refers to labeled axons or populations of axons at the cellular scale. In tractography, it denotes a mathematically r…

[From influenza to white matter].

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. The authors present the case of a 16-year-old boy who was admitted to the Paediatric Emergency Department of the University of Pécs Clinical Centre with acute neurological symptoms. The tests carried out raised the suspicion of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis is a disease characterized by impaired consciousness and abnormal findings on MRI. Extensive microbiological sampling is important in differential diagnosis. The authors point out if neurological sympto

Neuroticism and white matter hyperintensities.

Neuroticism is a major risk factor for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. This study investigates whether neuroticism is associated with white matter hyperintensities and whether this measure of brain integrity is a mediator between neuroticism and cognitive function. Middle-aged and older adults from the UK Biobank (N = 40,602; aged 45-82 years, M = 63.97, SD = 7.66) provided information on demographic and health covariates, completed measures of neuroticism and cognition, and underwent magnetic resonance imaging from which the volume of white matt…

Photocatalytic stannylation of white phosphorus.

Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) are highly important chemicals, finding numerous applications in both academia and industry. Herein we describe a simple photocatalytic method for the stannylation of white phosphorus (P4) using a cheap, commercially-available distannane, (Bu3Sn)2, and anthraquinone as a simple photocatalyst. Subsequent 'one pot' transformation of the resulting stannylated monophosphine intermediate (Bu3Sn)3P provides direct, convenient and versatile access to valuable OPCs such as acylated phosphines and tetraalkylphosphonium salts.

White Matter Lesions in Migraine.

Migraine, the third most common disease worldwide, is a well-known independent risk factor for subclinical focal deep white matter lesions (WMLs), even in young and otherwise healthy individuals with no cardiovascular risk factors. These WMLs are more commonly seen in migraine patients with transient neurologic symptoms preceding their headaches, the so-called aura, and those with a high attack frequency. The pathophysiology of migraine-related deep white matter hyperintensities remains poorly understood despite their prevalence. Characteristic differences in their distribution compared with t…

White matter abnormalities in misophonia.

Misophonia is a condition in which specific ordinary sounds provoke disproportionately strong negative affect and physiological arousal. Evidence for neurobiological abnormalities underlying misophonia is scarce. Since many psychiatric disorders show white matter (WM) abnormalities, we tested for both macro and micro-structural WM differences between misophonia patients and healthy controls. We collected T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance images from 24 patients and 25 matched controls. We tested for group differences in WM volume using whole-brain voxel-based morphometry an…

Deciphering White Adipose Tissue Heterogeneity.

Adipose tissue not only stores energy, but also controls metabolism through secretion of hormones, cytokines, proteins, and microRNAs that affect the function of cells and tissues throughout the body. Adipose tissue is organized into discrete depots throughout the body, and these depots are differentially associated with insulin resistance and increased risk of metabolic disease. In addition to energy-dissipating brown and beige adipocytes, recent lineage tracing studies have demonstrated that individual adipose depots are composed of white adipocytes that are derived from distinct precursor p…
