Modelling multiple laser pulses for port wine stain treatment.

Many port wine stains (PWS) are still resistant to pulsed dye laser treatment. However, anecdotal information suggests that multiple-pulse laser irradiation improves patient outcome. Our aims in this note are to explain the underlying mechanism and estimate the possible thermal effects of multiple pulses in vascular structures typical of PWS. Based on linear response theory, the linear combination of two thermal contributions is responsible for the total increase in temperature in laser irradiated blood vessels: direct light absorption by blood and direct bilateral thermal heat conduction from…

Relationships between food, wine, and beer-precipitated migrainous headaches.

Five hundred seventy-seven consecutive patients attending the Princess Margaret Migraine Clinic from 1989 to 1991 have been questioned about dietary precipitants of their headaches. Four hundred twenty-nine patients had migraine, of which 16.5% reported that headaches could be precipitated by cheese or chocolate, and nearly always both. Of the migraine patients, 18.4% reported sensitivity to all alcoholic drinks, while another 11.8% were sensitive to red wine but not to white wine; 28% of the migrainous patients reported that beer would precipitate headaches. There was a definite statistical a…

Pyogenic granuloma (lobular capillary hemangioma) within port-wine stains.

We observed two patients who developed pyogenic granulomas within port-wine stains. One had a single lesion without recurrence, whereas the second had multiple lesions that developed during a 6-year period. It has been postulated that arteriovenous anastomoses are associated with the pathogenesis of pyogenic granuloma. Formation of pyogenic granuloma within a port-wine stain, a lesion often associated with arteriovenous anastomoses, provides further support for this idea.

Harnessing wine yeasts: Unveiling their potential as lipid supplements.

In industry, clarifying white grape juice may lead to the partial loss of lipids, which yeasts use to alter their plasma membrane composition to overcome the stresses associated with wine fermentation. In this work, a selection of yeasts isolated from the broader wine environment was screened for their lipid composition using flow cytometry, gravimetric assays and GCMS. Inactivated dry yeasts were produced from six of the screened yeast strains and were tested as lipid supplements in over-clarified Chenin Blanc grape juice, alongside pure lipid mixtures matching the lipid concentrations occurr…

A Novel Cogu-like Virus Identified in Wine Grapes.

A new negative-strand RNA virus was identified in grapevines from a 38-year-old 'Chardonnay' block in Idaho through high-throughput sequenci … mples was confirmed by RT-PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing. This new virus was found in five wine grape cultivars and in six vineyards sampled in Idaho and in Oregon during the 2020-2024 seasons. GaCLIdV may have contributed to the decline observed in the old 'Chardonnay' block, although the role of the virus in symptom development awaits furthe …

Copper-based grape pest management has impacted wine aroma.

Despite the high energetic cost of the reduction of sulfate to H2S, required for the synthesis of sulfur-containing amino acids, some wine Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains have been reported to produce excessive amounts of H2S during alcoholic fermentation, which is detrimental to wine quality. Surprisingly, in the presence of sulfite, used as a preservative, wine strains produce more H2S than wild (oak) or wine velum (flor) isolates during fermentation. Since copper resistance caused by the amplification of the sulfur rich protein Cup1p is a specific adaptation trait of wine strains, we analy…

Identification of novel antihypertensive peptides from wine lees hydrolysate.

Enzymatic-assisted extraction using Flavourzyme® has been demonstrated to be a useful methodology to obtain wine lees (WL) enriched in phenolic compounds and with enhanced antihypertensive activity. Nevertheless, taking into account that Flavourzyme® possess proteolytic activity, the release of bioactive peptides should not be ruled out. In this study, we investigate the presence of antihypertensive peptides in the WL hydrolysate. Peptides were separated into fractions by ultrafiltration and RP-HPLC. Next, peptide identification by nano-HPLC-(Orbitrap)MS/MS was performed in the fractions showi…

Treatment Update of Port-Wine Stain: A Narrative Review.

Port-wine stain (PWS) is a congenital vascular malformation affecting 0.3–0.5% of normal population. These characteristic lesions arise due to the interplay of vascular, neural, and genetic factors. Treatment options include lasers, cosmetic tattooing, electrotherapy, cryosurgery, derma-abrasion, and skin grafting; however, none of these treatment alternatives appears to be satisfactory and is unable to provide consistent, satisfactory responses or even complete cures. Currently, laser is the treatment of choice, as it is comparatively safe and more effective than other procedures. The m…

Yeasts Induce Acetaldehyde Production in Wine Micro-oxygenation Treatments.

Micro-oxygenation (Mox) is a common technique used to stabilize color and reduce harsh astringency in red wines. Here, we investigate the role of residual sugars, phenolics, SO2, and yeast on the oxidation of wine in three studies. In a Mox experiment, populations of yeasts emerged after the loss of SO2, and this was associated with sharp increases in oxygen consumption and acetaldehyde production. No acetaldehyde production was observed without the presence of yeast. In an oxygen saturation experiment, unfiltered wines, in particular those with residual sugar >3 g/L, consumed oxygen more quic…

High pressure inactivation of Brettanomyces bruxellensis in red wine.

Brettanomyces bruxellensis ("Brett") is a major spoilage concern for the wine industry worldwide, leading to undesirable sensory properties. Sulphur dioxide, is currently the preferred method for wine preservation. However, due to its negative effects on consumers, the use of new alternative non-thermal technologies are increasingly being investigated. The aim of this study was to determine and model the effect of high pressure processing (HPP) conditions and yeast strain on the inactivation of "Brett" in Cabernet Sauvignon wine. Processing at 200 MPa for 3 min resulted in 5.8 log reductions. …

MET2 affects production of hydrogen sulfide during wine fermentation.

The production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) during yeast fermentation contributes negatively to wine aroma. We have mapped naturally occurring mutations in commercial wine strains that affect production of H2S. A dominant R310G mutant allele of MET2, which encodes homoserine O-acetyltransferase, is present in several wine yeast strains as well as in the main lab strain S288c. Reciprocal hemizygosity and allele swap experiments demonstrated that the MET2 R310G allele confers reduced H2S production. Mutations were also identified in genes encoding the two subunits of sulfite reductase, MET5 and MET…

Wine drinking and essential tremor: a possible protective role.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible association of cigarette smoking, coffee drinking, and wine consumption with essential tremor using a matched case-control design. Cases and controls were enrolled from 6 Movement Disorder centers in central-southern Italy. Essential tremor was diagnosed according to Bain's criteria. Three unrelated healthy controls (not affected by neurological disorders) per each enrolled case, matched by sex and age (± 5 years), were selected. A standardized questionnaire was administered to record demographic, epidemiological, and clinical data. All ca…

Micro-oxygenation of red wine: techniques, applications, and outcomes.

Wine micro-oxygenation (MOX) is the controlled addition of oxygen to wine in a manner designed to ensure that complete mass transfer of molecular oxygen from gaseous to dissolved state occurs. MOX was initially developed to improve the body, structure, and fruitfulness in red wines with high concentrations of tannins and anthocyanins, by replicating the ingress of oxygen thought to arise from barrel maturation, but without the need for putting all wine to barrel. This review describes the operational parameters essential for the effective performance of the micro-oxidation process as well as t…

Autism with facial port-wine stain: a new syndrome?

The hallmark of Sturge-Weber syndrome is leptomeningeal angiomatosis. Over 15 years, four children were identified (2 boys, age 2.9-6 years) with unilateral facial port-wine stain, referred for presumable Sturge-Weber syndrome but who were also autistic. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans failed to show evidence of leptomeningeal angioma in all four children. Three of the children had a history of seizures. Detailed neuropsychologic testing of three children revealed a similar presentation, characterized by developmental disturbance, particularly involving delayed onset o…
