Association between geriatric nutrition risk index and bone mineral density in elderly Chinese people.

UNLABELLED: Malnutrition contributes to the occurrence of osteoporosis. This study showed that participants with higher GNRI values had higher levels of BMD. GNRIs were positively correlated with BMD and independently associated with total hip T-score. GNRIs may be a good indicator for identifying elderly who need further bone health nutritional support. PURPOSE: To evaluate the relationship between geriatric nutrition risk index (GNRI) and bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly Chinese people. METHODS: We recruited 1130 older adults (60-89 years old) between May 2018 and December 2019. Parti

Asymptomatic vertebral fracture in Tunisian post-menopausal women at risk: prevalence and risk factors.

UNLABELLED: Data are still scarce regarding the prevalence and the associated factors of vertebral fractures (VF) in the North Africa and the Middle East region. In this study, VF were common in at risk Tunisian women with a prevalence of 26.19%. Lower total hip T-score, having severe back pain, and being physically inactive were independently associated with VF. INTRODUCTION: Vertebral fractures are related to a marked increase in morbidity and mortality and they are associated with a definite risk of subsequent fracture. Nevertheless, they remain underdiagnosed and little is known about the

Inflammatory status, body composition and ethnic differences in bone mineral density: The Southall and Brent Revisited Study.

Ethnic differences in bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture risk are well-described; the aim of this study was to investigate whether central adiposity or inflammatory status contribute to these ethnic differences in BMD in later life. The Southall and Brent Revisited study (SABRE) is a UK-based tri-ethnic cohort of men and women of European, South Asian or African Caribbean origin. At the most recent SABRE follow-up (2014-2018), in addition to measures of cardiometabolic phenotype, participants had dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) bone and body composition scans. Multiple linear regre

Abaloparatide Effects on Cortical Volumetric BMD and Estimated Strength Indices of Hip Subregions by 3D-DXA in Women With Postmenopausal Osteoporosis.

In ACTIVE, abaloparatide increased areal BMD (aBMD) of the hip and femoral neck vs teriparatide and placebo in women with osteoporosis. Previously, 3D-processing of dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans of a subgroup of ACTIVE subjects showed similar increases in trabecular volumetric BMD (Tb.vBMD) and greater increases in cortical vBMD (Ct.vBMD) of the total hip with abaloparatide vs teriparatide. The current analyses from this subgroup describe 2D- and 3D-DXA data for hip subregions. Randomly selected subjects from ACTIVE (n = 250/treatment group) who received 18 mo of placebo, abaloparatide

Bone Mineral Density at the Time of Initiating Aromatase Inhibitor Therapy Is Associated With Decreased Fractures in Women With Breast Cancer.

Women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer who receive an aromatase inhibitor (AI) are at risk for fractures. We aim to determine if dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans made at the time of AI initiation are associated with decreased fractures. We retrospectively identified 25,158 women with local or regional breast cancer diagnosed between 2005 and 2013 who received AI therapy between 2007 and 2013 from the Medicare-linked Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and Texas Cancer Registry databases. We defined baseline DXA screening using claims made between 1 year

A Comparison of Bone Mineral Density and Its Predictors in HIV-Infected and HIV-Uninfected Older Men.

OBJECTIVE: Bone health in older individuals with HIV infection has not been well studied. This study aimed to compare bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular bone score (TBS), and bone markers between HIV-infected men and age- and body mass index (BMI)-matched HIV-uninfected men aged ≥60 years. We investigated the associations of risk factors related to fracture with BMD, TBS, and bone markers in HIV-infected men. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 45 HIV-infected men receiving antiretroviral therapy and 42 HIV-uninfected men. Medical history, BMD and TBS measurements, and laboratory

Trabecular Bone Score has Poor Association With pQCT Derived Trabecular Bone Density in Indian Children With Type 1 Diabetes and Healthy Controls.

BACKGROUND: In children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), low trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (Trab vBMD) has been reported. However, studies using the trabecular bone score (TBS) are scarce. The objective of our study was to assess areal bone mineral density at the lumbar spine (LS aBMD), the TBS and Trab vBMD in children with type 1 diabetes in comparison with healthy controls and to assess the relationship of Trab vBMD with TBS. METHODS: A total of 205 children were assessed for their LS bone mineral content (BMC) and LS aBMD by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and Tra

Comparison of single-slice CT and DXA-derived measures of central adiposity in South African women.

BACKGROUND: Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation is a known risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases. Efficient imaging modalities are necessary to quantify VAT. The study assessed the agreement between dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and single-slice computed tomography (CT) for abdominal fat quantification in mixed-ancestry South African women, and determined if this differed by body mass index (BMI) categories. METHODS: VAT and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) were measured using single-slice CT and DXA in 132 women aged 55 (45-64) years. Participants were categoris

Modestly degraded microarchitecture and high serum levels of osteopontin in Swedish females with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Adult women with long-time anorexia nervosa (AN) are believed to have osteopenia (T-score ≤ 1.0) in 93 % and osteoporosis (T-score ≤ 2.5) in 38 %. Bone microarchitecture assessed by Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) predicts osteoporotic fractures. Our aim was to evaluate the microarchitecture in adult females with AN by determining TBS and to identify factors potentially associated with TBS, such as bone turnover markers. METHODS: 20 female patients with AN (DSM IV), aged 27.8 ± 4.4 years, BMI 16.6 ± 0.6 kg/m2 and duration of illness of 8.5 ± 5 years had previously been evaluated with dua

Bone Measures by Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry and Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography in Young Women With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Understanding bone fragility in young adult females with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is of great clinical importance since the high fracture risk in this population remains unexplained. This study aimed to investigate bone health in young adult T1DM females by comparing relevant variables determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) at the tibia and pQCT-based finite element analysis (pQCT-FEA) between T1DM subjects (n = 21) and age-, height- and weight-matched controls (n = 63). Growth, Body Composition, and Lung Function in Prepubertal Children with Cystic Fibrosis Diagnosed by Newborn Screening.

BACKGROUND: Children with cystic fibrosis (CF) are at risk of altered body composition (BC). Newborn screening (NBS) may lead to improved BC outcomes. We investigated BC and its relationship with lung function in prepubertal children diagnosed with CF by NBS. Secondary aims explored predictors of fat-free mass (FFM) and lung function. METHODS: Thirty-seven screened (non-meconium ileus) children with CF (20 boys) born 2007-2012 had a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scan at 5-8 years to determine whole-body (WB) and appendicular BC. Anthropometry was performed and routine spirometry recorded.

Musculoskeletal phenotype in two unrelated individuals with a recurrent nonsense variant in SGMS2.

Heterozygous mutations in the gene encoding the sphingomyelin synthase 2, SGMS2, have recently been linked to childhood-onset osteoporosis and skeletal dysplasia. One nonsense variant at position c.148C>T (p.Arg50*) has been associated with mild bone fragility with or without cranial sclerosis. Here we assessed the effect of the SGMS2 p.Arg50* variant in two unrelated probands with childhood-onset osteoporosis and their unaffected family members. We found that the p.Arg50* variant was associated with phenotypic variability, ranging from absence of a bone phenotype to severe vertebral compressi
