Heart rate and startle responses in diving, captive harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) exposed to transient noise and sonar.

Anthropogenic noise can alter marine mammal behaviour and physiology, but little is known about cetacean cardiovascular responses to exposures, despite evidence that acoustic stressors, such as naval sonars, may lead to decompression sickness. Here, we measured heart rate and movements of two trained harbour porpoises during controlled exposure to 6-9 kHz sonar-like sweeps and 40 kHz peak-frequency noise pulses, designed to evoke acoustic startle responses. The porpoises initially responded to the sonar sweep with intensified bradycardia despite unaltered behaviour/movement, but habituated rap

Predictive Ability of Direct Electrical Stimulation on Facial Nerve Function Following Vestibular Schwannoma Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Facial nerve preservation is critical in vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery. Direct electrical stimulation (DES) is a widely used method for intraoperative localization of the facial nerve and assessment of nerve integrity. We sought to assess the predictive ability of DES parameters on facial nerve function post-VS surgery. DATABASES REVIEWED: A systematic literature search of English-language studies published from 1946 to 2019 was undertaken using EMBASE, MedLine/PubMed, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. METHODS: Included studies involved patients undergoi

Frequency-specific Electrocochleography and Traveling Wave Time as a Clinical Test for Menière's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Menière's disease is a clinical entity with no definitive objective testing. It has been hypothesized that underlying endolymphatic hydrops stiffens the basilar membrane leading to increased speed of the acoustic stimulus, therefore traveling wave velocity has been proposed as an objective test to aid in the diagnosis. The objective of this study is to compare electrocochleography frequency-specific action potential latency, basilar membrane traveling wave time, and summation to action potential (SP/AP) ratio in Menière's and non-Menière's patients. METHODS: Tympanic electrococh

Bilateral age-related atrophy in the planum temporale is associated with vowel discrimination difficulty in healthy older adults.

In this study we investigated the association between age-related brain atrophy and behavioural as well as electrophysiological markers of vowel perception in a sample of healthy younger and older adults with normal pure-tone hearing. Twenty-three older adults and 27 younger controls discriminated a set of vowels with altered second formants embedded in consonant-vowel syllables. Additionally, mismatch negativity (MMN) responses were recorded in a separate oddball paradigm with the same set of stimuli. A structural magnet resonance scan was obtained for each participant to determine cortical a

Using auditory reaction time to measure loudness growth in rats.

Previous studies have demonstrated that auditory reaction time (RT) is a reliable surrogate of loudness perception in humans. Reaction time-intensity (RT-I) functions faithfully recapitulate equal loudness contours in humans while being easier to obtain than equal loudness judgments, especially in animals. In humans, loudness estimation not only depends on sound intensity, but on a variety of other acoustic factors. Stimulus duration and bandwidth are known to impact loudness perception. In addition, the presence of background noise mimics loudness recruitment; loudness growth is rapid near th

Mismatch negativity to different deviant changes in autism spectrum disorders: A meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Mismatch negativity (MMN) has been continuously used to evaluate the functional integrity of central auditory processing. However, it still remains inconclusive whether patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate reduced MMN responses in all deviant types. METHODS: To reconcile the previous controversial findings, we performed a meta-analysis of peer-reviewed MMN articles concerning ASD. The potential moderators regarding different deviant types, diagnosis, and age on the effect sizes (Hedges' g) were also assessed. RESULTS: Compared to the controls, ASD patients show

Modified synaptic dynamics predict neural activity patterns in an auditory field within the frontal cortex.

Frontal areas of the mammalian cortex are thought to be important for cognitive control and complex behaviour. These areas have been studied mostly in humans, non-human primates and rodents. In this article, we present a quantitative characterization of response properties of a frontal auditory area responsive to sound in the brain of Carollia perspicillata, the frontal auditory field (FAF). Bats are highly vocal animals, and they constitute an important experimental model for studying the auditory system. We combined electrophysiology experiments and computational simulations to compare the r

Understanding the mechanisms of familiar voice-identity recognition in the human brain.

Humans have a remarkable skill for voice-identity recognition: most of us can remember many voices that surround us as 'unique'. In this review, we explore the computational and neural mechanisms which may support our ability to represent and recognise a unique voice-identity. We examine the functional architecture of voice-sensitive regions in the superior temporal gyrus/sulcus, and bring together findings on how these regions may interact with each other, and additional face-sensitive regions, to support voice-identity processing. We also contrast findings from studies on neurotypicals and c

Cortical responses to tone and phoneme mismatch as a predictor of dyslexia? A systematic review.

Evidence from event-related-potential (ERP) studies has repeatedly shown differences in the perception and processing of auditory stimuli in children with dyslexia compared to control children. The mismatch negativity (MMN) - an ERP component reflecting passive auditory change detection ability - has been found to be reduced, not only in children with a diagnosis of dyslexia, but also in infants and preschool children at risk of developing dyslexia. However, the results are controversial due to the different methods, age of the children and stimuli used. The aim of the present review is to sum

Effects of regularity on the processing of sound omission in a tone sequence in musicians and non-musicians.

Numerous studies have reported that perceptual grouping affects the pre-attentive processing of sound omission in a sequence of tones. However, it remains unclear whether or not the perceptual grouping and musical experience affect the attentive processing of sound omission. To this end, we created a sequence of loud (L) and soft (S) tones grouped as 'LLSLLS…' and a random sequence of the L and S tones. The omission of the L tones was inserted pseudo-randomly in the random sequence, and there were two positions at which it was inserted. For within-group omission, the omission was after the fir

[Changes of EEG power spectrum in response to the emotional auditory stimuli in patients in acute and recovery stages of TBI (traumatic brain injury)].

We investigated variability of responses to emotionally important auditory stimulation in different groups of TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) in acute state or recovery. The patients sampling consisted of three different groups: patients in coma or vegetative state, patients with Severe and Moderate TBI in recovery period. Subjects were stimulated with auditory stimuli containing important physiological sounds (coughing, vomiting), emotional sounds (laughing, crying), nature sounds (bird song, barking), unpleasant household sounds (nails scratching the glass), natural sounds (sea, rain, fire) and

Noise-induced hyperactivity in the inferior colliculus: its relationship with hyperactivity in the dorsal cochlear nucleus.

Intense noise exposure causes hyperactivity to develop in the mammalian dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) and inferior colliculus (IC). It has not yet been established whether the IC hyperactivity is driven by hyperactivity from extrinsic sources that include the DCN or instead is maintained independently of this input. We have investigated the extent to which IC hyperactivity is dependent on input from the contralateral DCN by comparing recordings of spontaneous activity in the IC of noise-exposed and control hamsters before and after ablation of the contralateral DCN. One group of animals was bi

Contextual modulation of olivocochlear pathway effects on loud sound-induced cochlear hearing desensitization.

This study shows that the cochlear hearing losses [temporary threshold shifts (TTSs)] induced by traumatic sound and the effect of olivocochlear (OC) pathways to the cochlea on these hearing losses depend on the context of the sound. Background atraumatic white noise (WN) has been shown to 1) exacerbate loud-pure-tone-induced TTSs, and 2) promote the modulation of TTSs by the uncrossed OC (UOC) pathways additional to the action on TTSs, elicited by binaural loud tones themselves, by the crossed OC (COC) pathway. Here the same atraumatic WN reduced TTSs caused by loud narrow band sound. It also

[Endogenous potentials evoked by acoustic stimulus in children with idiopathic headache--preliminary report].

PURPOSE: Endogenous evoked potentials (P300) are elicited by several stimuli, and are electrophysiological consequence of cognitive processing. Abnormalities have often been reported in dementive syndromes, demyelinating diseases, metabolic disorders, CNS tumors, phacomatoses, neuroinfections, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and epilepsy. The role of this element of neurophysiological characteristics is debated in migraine, pato-genetically undefined, and other primary headaches. THE AIM: The aim of this research was to determine whether the parameters of endogenous responses to the

Temporal pattern recognition based on instantaneous spike rate coding in a simple auditory system.

Auditory pattern recognition by the CNS is a fundamental process in acoustic communication. Because crickets communicate with stereotyped patterns of constant frequency syllables, they are established models to investigate the neuronal mechanisms of auditory pattern recognition. Here we provide evidence that for the neural processing of amplitude-modulated sounds, the instantaneous spike rate rather than the time-averaged neural activity is the appropriate coding principle by comparing both coding parameters in a thoracic interneuron (Omega neuron ON1) of the cricket (Gryllus bimaculatus) audi

Experimental confirmation of the two-source interference model for the fine structure of distortion product otoacoustic emissions.

High-resolution measurements of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) from three different experimental paradigms are shown to be in agreement with the implications of a realistic "two-source" cochlear model of DPOAE fine structure. The measurements of DPOAE amplitude and phase imply an interference phenomenon involving one source in the region of strong nonlinear interaction of the primary waves (the strong "overlap" or generation region), and the other source region around the DPOAE tonotopic place. The component from the DPOAE place can be larger than the one from the generator
