Acoustic reflex and loudness discomfort in acute facial paralysis.

An extensive research protocol was used to evaluate the conditions of 48 consecutive patients with acute facial paralysis. The results indicated that after nerve excitability testing, the acoustic reflex was the most efficient indicator of impending nerve degeneration and predictor of recovery. The presence of increased sensitivity to intense acoustic stimuli (loudness discomfort level) indicated poor prognosis. The data demonstrate that dysacusis (hyperacusis) is not related to stapedial muscle paralysis and also question the validity of "topographic diagnosis" in determination of the site of

The acoustic reflex and temporary threshold shift: temporal characteristics.

One ear of each of seven normal-hearing subjects was exposed to a continuous 1000-Hz tone at 110 dB SPL for three minutes. During exposure, a broad-band noise at 100 dB SPL was presented to the contralateral ear. The noise was either continuous or pulsed. Four pulsed conditions employed repetition periods of 360, 180, 90, or 9 msec with a 50% duty cycle. A control condition in which no noise was presented was also included. Temporary threshold shift was measured at selected postexposure times at the frequency one-half octave above the exposure frequency. TTS2 was greatest for the control condi

Electrocochleographic changes in acoustic neuroma: some experimental findings.

Reversible experimental lesions were produced in the central end of the cochlear nerve at the IAM of guinea pigs by various procedures, including the instillation of KCl (0.1 or 0.01 M). As a result the usual diphasic AP waveforms seen in guinea pigs (when click stimuli are used) were transformed into monophasic, widened negative waves. This change, attributed to a neural block, was reversible, e.g. when the instilled KCl was dispersed by irrigation with normal saline. It is suggested that the widened monophasic negative AP's observed at ECochG in cases of acoustic neuroma or similar lesions,

Co-existing post-stapedectomy fistula and acoustic neuroma.

A 66 year old woman had light-headedness and ataxia which increased slowly despite tissue seal of a post-stapedectomy oval window fistula. The cause was shown to be a large acoustic neuroma, ipsilateral to the side of the fistula. The history, physical, and laboratory findings are presented.

[The anosognostic psychosyndrome. Studies and reflections on a case of acoustic agnosia].

We analyse structure and dynamics of anosognostic behavior by means of a case with auditory agnosia for both linguistic and non-linguistic material. First we investigate on the observational level the structural interweaving of conditions. Second we make an attempt of a structural dynamic analysis with inclusion of both neurophysiological and psychodynamic aspects within a frame which is orientated towards system theories. By doing this, the anosognostic syndrome which is describable in a phenomenalistic sense as a disturbance of body-scheme, neuropsychologically as a neglect-or extinction-syn

[Angiography in the diagnosis of neurinomas of the acoustic nerve (author's transl)].

40 cases of neurinoma of the acoustic nerve, studied by vertebral arteriography and controlled at surgery are reviewed. The angiographic signs of the lesion are analysed and a number of examples presented.

Critical bandwidth and sensitivity prediction in the acoustic stapedial reflex.

Critical bandwidth measurements and sensitivity prediction from the acoustic reflex (SPAR) test results were obtained on 20 normal-hearing and two groups of 10 hearing-impaired subjects each representing mild-to-moderate and severe hearing loss. Results of critical bandwidth measurements indicated that for center frequencies of 1000 and 2000 Hz the critical bandwidth was significantly greater for the hearing-impaired subjects. A statistical analysis of the differences in critical bandwidth between those predicted by the SPAR test to have a mild-to-moderate hearing loss and those subjects for w

Static and dynamic acoustic impedance measurements in infant ears.

Tympanometry and acoustic reflex threshold data are reported for a series of presumable normal infants ranging in age from 55 to 132 days. In general, tympanograms displayed single peaks between +/- 50 mm H2O. Susceptance tympanograms with a 660-Hz probe frequency were sometimes characterized by monotonically increasing susceptance as ear canal pressure was changed from -200 to +200 mm H2O. Static values of acoustic conductance, susceptance, admittance, resistance, reactance, impedance, and phase angle were computed from tympanograms using the values of ambient and +200 mm H2O (0/+200 procedur

[Acoustic investigations in orbital tumor diagnosis (author's transl)].

360 patients with unilateral exophthalmos were examined with echoophthalmograph to study the diagnostical possibilities of a method of echography in orbital tumors. The findings of para- and transbulbal methodics were checked in 140 patients. The tonometry of tumors and soft orbital tissues was performed. The methodics of acoustic orbitonometry based on the measurement of retrobulbal neoplasms at the moment of their step-by-step compression was worked out. The echographic symptoms of different orbital neoplasms is described as well as those of pseudotumor and tireotropic exophthalmos. The poss

Auditory similarities associated with genetic and experimental acoustic deprivation.

Susceptibility to audiogenic seizures has been produced in otherwise non-susceptible mice by acoustic stress and by conductive hearing loss. Both procedures temporarily elevate the absolute threshold of the auditory evoked potential (AEP) and are maximally effective during a circumscribed period of early development. In the genetically SUSCEPTIBLE DBA/2J mouse, AEP thresholds indicated that its auditory system is functionally less mature during this early period than that of the nonsusceptible C57BL/6Jmouse. It was proposed that innate susceptibility found in the DBA/2J mouse results from audi
